I'm looking to trade my A E Schmidt for a Gold Grown and may have an opportunity to work a deal for a Gold Crown I.

How does the I compare to other models?

I would say it depends on which schmidt you are talking about, there are some that are better than others.

On the flip side, some GCs have issues too.

The best tables I've played on were GC I and IIs, Diamond Pros, and a Gandy. To my knowledge I've never played on a GC III, IV, or V. I've also never played on a Schmidt. My GC I plays just like the GC IIs at the pool hall. Now that I have one I know better how to look for potential problems. The slate and rails are still in good condition on my GC I so with a little work it still plays great. When you look underneath it does show it's age though. Lots of different screw holes in the wood and a ball box that doesn't exactly fit the table. I'm told the ball box came from a GC II. GC Is were built between 1963 and 1969 so most of them have a lot of history.

First see how it plays, then look underneath. I wouldn't buy one that wasn't put together so I could try it out.

The Gold Crown 1 tables were made to last and last. I love them and I think they are great tables, in fact I grew up playing on them in St.Louis.
I also played on the Schmidt tables but I never liked them as much as a Gold Crowns.

The basic design of the Gold Crown 1 frame is very very strong and the slate and other parts of the tables body from an Anniversary table is inter changeable with the Gold Crown 1 and 2. I have an Anniversary that I bought around 5 years ago, with a broken slate. I purchased a messed up Gold Crown 1 that had good slate and used the slate for my Anniversary. It fit perfect and that is how I also found out that the frames bolt holes are exactly the same.

I would get the Gold Crown hands down as long as it is in good condition, but in St. Louis there is no shortage of Old Gold Crowns so parts would be easy to find anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys. It depends on what he will give me in trade for my Schmidt. If I work a deal I'll bump this thread with pics.
