I've always hated that pay a dozen places crap in small local tournaments.

If you keep top loading the payouts the lesser players will quit showing up.

One quarter of the field is the norm, if you have a player auction you can top load that.
Thanks Kennan

Pay for the TD is acceptible, because "if you do not get a little you will be working on getting alot" Grifters

As a rule I usually pay out the top 25% of the field. with 50% of the prize money going to 1st place. For league tournaments I pay deeper in the field.

Around here in a tournament of that size and entry fee most lesser players won't even enter it and even if you do pay down to 5th/6th they aren't getting in the money.

The problem I'm seeing around here now is none of the tournaments want to run a player auction anymore. Which really makes it not worth the time wasted playing in the tournament, correction make that not worth the time sitting around waiting to play.

So you take that small prize fund and cut it up even more and that just makes it worse.

But that's just me.

Payouts

This is how I would do it.

250
125
75
50
30
30

$2 a player for the TD = $40

**If you're allowed to , a little $2 or 3 minimum buy in calcutta is cool too!

Ray

ps. around here all the tournaments add from $50-100 too.

You should talk to the establishment about adding some additional money to tournaments. Most if not all the weekly tournaments in Arizona add 50-100% of the pot. But these are for $5/$7 entry tournaments. If the bar added $5/person to the tournament your turnout would increase.

30 x 5 = $150 more to the pot.

Then:

1st) $325
2nd) $200
3rd) $100
4th) $50
5th/6th) $25

Normal protocol is to pay out 1/4th of the field. Usually the lowest place to get money gets their money back. 32 person field pays 8, 64 pays 16, etc.

If the bar added a little money, you might have 45 - 50 persons at your next tournament. Paying 12 places.

Let's say you got 50 players x $20 (Plus bar added money $250) = $1250 payout total.

1st) $425
2nd) $250
3rd) $170
4th) $125
5th/6th) $60 each
7th/8th) $40 each
9th/12th) $20 each

Do the math for the tables with average amount of games per match multiplied by cost per game. (ie. 50 players is ~49 matches played, Average 7 games per match * $.75 per game = $257.25 into the tables not including practice, matches afterwards and in between matches.) If you present it right you should be able to get the owners to put up more money thus equalling more successful tournaments thus better business.

Good Luck!
