i'm curious of what other cuemakers feel is the best way to install an ivory joint and ivory buttcap

i've only done a few ivory joints

one, i strictly glued, epoxy
other two i tapped and threaded tenon to 5/8x18, leaving a 3/8 cap

gotta admit, that was a little scary
i had visions of it splitting wide open while threading it

i've not done an ivory buttcap as of yet

do you feel that epoxy alone is suitable???? without threading????

I can only speak for myself. I have never threaded any parts of my Qs,Ivory or otherwise. I don't fix what ain't broke. I use Ivory for quit a few Qs. Butt caps are glued & bolted in like the others. I have experimented with both sleeved & capped Ivory joint collars & find that both work equally well. I use epoxy for everything but tips...JER

You mean you have a bolt behind the Delrin holding it in place?
Do you then epoxy the bolt?

I thread my Delrin buttcap then put a glue channel in it.
I thread my staghorn collars. I thread my ferrule tenons too.
The lug nuts in my car's tires are threaded too.:D

But, to each his own.

i've only used a delrin butt once
i'm not too fond of delrin personally
cuz nothin sticks to it
why use something that cant be finished with clear is my philosophy
i'm gonna go check my lugnuts now :D

Delrin polishes great without finish. It's nearly indestructible as buttcap.
Epoxy doesn't stick to it. So you create a mechanical bond with it.
Thread it and thread the tenon. I feel more comfortable with a threaded Delrin buttcap than epoxied/unthreaded phenolic.

I believe there is no one correct way to build a cue. It's not something taught in a Trade school such as plumbing or machining. Until the last few years when all the "how to" tapes, DVDs and books came out on cue building, everything was learned on your own. Through trial and error, you found what worked good for you, both, in materials and technique. Since most cue makers want to build a cue better than anyone Else's, they, of coarse, think that their way of building a cue is the best or they wouldn't be doing it that way. What works for one person, another might think is shoddy. Also, what works for one person another might feel is over kill and not needed. Sort of like one person parking his car in the driveway and putting it in park. Many drivers do this everyday and feel it is safe enough. Another person may park his car in the driveway and put the car in park but also apply the emergency brake and put chocks around all of the wheels. The first driver would say that, through experience of parking in the driveway for many years and not having the car roll away, that just using Park is good enough. The other driver takes the extra measures to insure the car doesn't roll away. Which driver is right? The first driver, through his experience feels just park is fine and the extra time involved in the brake and chocking is wasted. The second driver, through his experience or maybe through experiences in life in general, would sleep much better knowing that all has been done to insure that car won't move. You build to the parameters that you are comfortable with. Bottom line, for me at least, is that if it's not broke, don't try to fix it.

i dont thread my delrin on. just epoxy then weight bolt. i dont epoxy the bolt bc i want to be able to get it out

i also had the same question yesterday about if not threading an ivory joint on would be a mistake and i was told just cutting grooves and epoxy would be enough.

i was scared it would come flying off

The shoulder hurts every day. I started theripy this week. I'm supposed to go 3 times a week, for a month. I asked the doctor, when I could start to play pool again. He said by the end of this month. I forgot to tell him that I have been playing (in pain), for 2 weeks. Last week I stretched out for a long shot & my arm started to quiver & shake & it collapsed on me & I flopped right on the table. It hurt like hell, but what was worse...I gave the guy a ball in hand & he beat me...JER

by no means am i trying to tell you what to do
but recently, i did a repair on a meucci for ccn7 here on az
he took out the weight bolt to get cue lighter
low and behold the butt sleeve came off
it only had about a 1/4" tenon on it to start with and i guess the weight bolt kept it on ok till he fooled with it
i doubt that it was the original purpose of the weight bolt but that did teach me something
someone down the road may end up with one of cues and possibly do the same thing and it's, geez, my buttcap fell off :(
might want to reconsider being able to remove your bolt
best of luck dave

hey, by the way, have you ever posted any pics of your cues on here???
i'd like to see some of them

I'm sorry Jerry, and I have a bad shoulder myself that causes me problems when I play, but that was FUNNY! :p

Very common on more cues than you think and beside the weight, it is the purpose to hold it on. I agree with Joey, thread it and cut channels for the epoxy to hold it.

First, nothing worst than loose lugnuts:eek:
I just had a repair for someone who bought a used stick and then had a bad rattle every time they shot. It was a stripped weight bolt that someone tried to remove, but because it was epoxied, they stripped the wood threads trying to change it, and I had a bear of a time removing it and the repairing it. I don't care to much for a glued in bolt, as the next person to touch it may not know it was epoxied and to heat it first before removing.
point of story, we as builders have to consider, no matter how we build it, someone will F@#$ with it sooner or later, especially a weight bolt, and how easy will it be for someone, maybe us, to fix it.
