????Original Color of Money Joss Cue

Somebody I know who was in that movie claims to have sold a cue given to him by the production company, a Schon, for $350.

I don't remember seeing any Schons in the movie, a lot of McDermotts, though. I may have missed it. When Eddie gave Vincent the "Balabushka", I turned to my wife and said "That's no 'Bushka, it's a Joss!"

99.999% of the people who have seen the movie still believe it is a Balabushka. Is it actually worth the extra effort to try to convince 1 out of 100,000 people?

Fair enough I guess, although it seems odd Mr. Janes and Mr. Sigel didn't feel the urge to make it more authentic seeing as they knew the difference even if no-one else did.

Of course when I first saw the movie as a young kid back in merry olde England what puzzled me more was how anyone could make a fuss out of a cue with a giant white ferrule on the shaft and that tacky string around the butt. Back in the mother land the only cues with ferrules like that were junky house cues. Serious cues strictly only came wrapless, full splice, (butterfly natch) and had short brass ferrules. The better the cue, the smaller the ferrule :-)

Isn't it funny how ones tastes can change?

I've asked Dan Janes about the "COM" cue several times over the years. There was no "production" or "limited" run of the cue that was made for The Color of Money. He made that cue specifically for the movie. I think he mentioned that Newman and Cruise got one of these cues, as well as some members of the staff. Otherwise, it was not available for purchase, and he WILL NOT make another one. He gets daily offers to build that exact cue for thousands of dollars and will not do it.

He told me years ago that they reproduced about a dozen of those cues, and that they were autographed by Newman and Cruise, and was selling them back then for $5,000.
Last I knew, there was 2-3 left, but that was several years ago. then they started with the Color of Money cue in the catalog.
Still a great looking cue, but too much smoke and mirrors to distinguish the actual value I guess.
I remember something about $1200 new without the signatures, though, and that would have been in the gold letters days.

Grady Seasons told me that he was hitting 'em with a Schon when he told Vincent that it's like a nightmare! ;)

Another pic . . .

This is the version I saw for sale most often in the 90's . . . regardless, its a pretty cue and a Joss is a great player.

The top Cue in your picture has Yellow where mine is Green, but other than that they are the same including the Gold "Joss Custom" Apparently there are several versions of the N 7 both 1980's and present day. IMHO the true value of a Stick is not how fancy but how good it hits.

I am hopping Dan Janes can find the time to answer all the questions raised in this thread. But I don't want to bug him by E mail again.

COM Cue

The second from the left is the aniversary COM cue. The one on the right end is a 60 inch COM copy per Dan Janes. Notice the green spec wrap.

the cue on the right doesn't look like having inlays in the point (just like in the original cue) this is the only replica that I've seen made like that. But it does have a hoppe ring that the original did not have.

Several months ago I got curious so I called Joss Cues and spoke to Dan Janes and asked him about the COM cue. I got the feeling he gets asked about it quite a bit and he loves telling the story.

He told me he made 2 identical cues for the movie and they wete both unique so they'd easily identifiable. He wouldn't tell me what made them unique but he did tell me that after he turned them over to the movie studio and the movie production ended he can confirm that he has not seen either since though many people have shown him replicas that claimed to be the actual movie cues.

So I found some information about the movie and through a friend or two I was put in touch with a couple of people who put me in touch with a couple of other people and so on... eventually I was able to speak with a couple of folks that worked on the movie. Although they didn't know the current location of either cue they told me that one of the cues was autographed by Paul Newman and Tom Cruise and sold at an auction.

The other cue went somewhere else. It seems that when production finishes some of the movie items get claimed by the the actors or the crew or the production staff. The person that gets first dibbs is the Prop Master or the guy that is in charge of the "stuff" that gets used in the movie, he's the one that took cue #2. I got a name and did some further investigating and I narrowed it down to a couple of possibilities with this identical name. One still in the LA area and the other in I think Kentucky.

I was able to get some contact information and tried to email both but never heard from either one, I suppose I'm not the first one of us that tried to contact these guys. What ever it was, that cue remains safely anonymous. I have to wonder if someone uses it as a daily player and has no idea what they're playing with.

Does anyone know who bought the auctioned cue?

There in lies the story to be told ..
Prop Master on the set was my brother inlaw Jeffery Renfrow .
I loved him like a Brother .. he drove me to O Hare 1 morning and as I was departing he expressed to me that he would take care of my sister . I responded to him while looking him in the eyes and stated to him to make an honest woman of her .. He did .
Years later Jeff , my 2 older Brothers and Myself played pool with this cue at a local pool and bar lounge .. I broke the 8 ball showing off my talents and hustling my brothers ..
Jeff proceeded to wipe up the floor with me the rest of the night .. My brothers only laughed .

I have found that these momentos passed onto our family have given me pause to reflect of all the stories Jeff passed upon us about his works with so many famous peoples in that industry .

Now for my question . Whom made the cue cases utilized in the production of said movie ?

Oddly enough I was told that the cue that was auctioned off for charity sold for $700.00. Little more then the cue was actually worth as a Joss cue much less the cue from the movie. I heard this at the time it took place making it seem most likely correct.

Here IT is !

I thought the movie cue did not have those diamond inlays?

Blue interior of the case looks like what they had in the movie.

Another neat story about the cue, when some guys at id software were making a game one of them saw the movie and named their game "Doom" after the line "what's in the case?" "Doom".

I think that's what I heard, also.

I've never heard that it was made to resemble an actual Balabushka. I worked with a guy for a while who swore up and down the cue was a real Balabushka, even after I showed him print outs from Dan Janes talking about making the cue. There are still people who believe the Adam Balabushka cues are the real thing, too:rolleyes:
