Ortmann-Hall of Fame

Markus,
That was a pretty accurate post! I personally would still consider the all the World Champions TRUE champions because they DID win over the field they competed in and it's not really their fault if some of the tournaments were pared down due to political ranklings between orginizations.
Here is a list of the winners of every tournament that was billed as a World 9 Ball Championship from the 1980 starting point. (My list goes back to 1962 when Lassiter reigned)
1980-Jim Rempe Jimmy Reid
1981- Mike Sigel
1982-Nick Varner
1983-Buddy Hall Allen Hopkins & Ray Martin
1984-Earl Strickland Buddy Hall
1985-Mike Sigel
1986-Mike Sigel
1987-Mike Sigel
1988-Earl Strickland
1989-Nick Varner
1990-Earl Strickland
1991-Earl Strickland
1992-Johnny Archer
1993-Fong Pang Chao Johnny Archer
1994-Earl Strickland Takeshi Okumura
1995-Oliver Ortmann Johnny Archer
1996-Ralf Souquet Rudolpho Luat
1997-Johnny Archer
1998-Kunihiko Takahashi
1999-Nick Varner Efren Reyes
2000-Fong Pang Chao
2001-Mike Immonen
2002-Earl Strickland
2003-Thorsten Hohmann
2004-Alex Pagulayan
2005-Chi-Ching Wu
2006-Ronnie Alcano
2007-?????????

Keep in mind that, like modern day boxing, at times pool had several competing orginizations or promoters that billed their tournament as a "World Championship". Some had stronger fields than others, but nonetheless, they were strong fields.

Also keep in mind that the modern majors attract far more players than in the past. In some "World Champoionships" of the past, you were lucky to have a field of 32 players. I'm talking mainly about the 1970's. Today, qualifiers limit the WPC field to 128. The U.S. Open, the Derby City Classic and the Japan Open all boast huge (225+) fields.

This is great stuff!

Thank's Terry!

Hey, I'm getting more hungry while eating. Can you please send the list from -62 to -79, if anyhow possible.

Pleeeease :)

Ps. It's funny how Mike won three times in a row at 85-87, but his last US Open was at -83. Which one was harder to win those days; a WC, or the Opens? How big difference there is in those WCs, during years 80-89? Meaning, that were there major differences between the fields and the prize monies? Who was the organizor, or did it change all the time? For example at 83, there's 3 champs listed. Were all the top pros still playing in all those three fields, or was it like 'one third of the WC', when you won one of those?

Markus,
When Sigel won his last U.S. Open 9 Ball title in 1983, he beat David Howard in the finals. Steve Mizerak was 3rd and Jim Rempe finished 4th.
There was not a lot of difference in the fields in those days. The usual players were Sigel, Rempe, Mizerak, Hopkins, McCready, Jimmy Reid, Ray Martin, Dallas West, etc. Here's one reason why. Since you picked 1983, the top prize winners for 1983 were Mike Sigel w/ $46,300. 2nd was Mizerak w/ $38,200. Earl Strickland was 3rd w/ $26,400 and Ray Martin was 4th w/ $24,700.
Barry Berhman has been the promoter of the U.S. Open 9 Ball since 1976. He's done a superb job of keeping this prestigious event rolling.
Hope this info helps answer some of your questions.
Here's the other winners of the World 9 Ball Championships that you wanted to see...

You're right I have a voodoo doll and a harry potter book of spells. I've been sat under a wet tree for a week chanting and huming trying to force you to attack me first in all these threads just so I can reply to you! You got me, my plan is rumbled!

Pretend? I'm crap at it, I work for a living too and I suck at poker! I did play in one or two small tournaments in the last 3 months though, but hey gotta work to pay the bills right? I can't just sit at home all day doing nothing! ;)

You were a little behind on points at this time, and I believe you felt it.After your last remark I knew for sure you felt it slipping away, and then you fouled. There was absolutely no reason for you to go there. ( you know exactly what I mean ) Both you and Jam are intellegent people, having a very entertaining battle, and then you blew it.

lovely pic lol, :D

Nah won't be at the open I've just had my 3 months playing Pro Pool, strange I didn't see you or your boyfriend at any of the tournaments though? I'm just a pretend player, why wasn't he there? I might be in Manila(not America, its in Asia) for the world champs in November though, I assume you and your proper pool player will be there of course?

Didn't he play Oliver in the IPT once also, what was the score again? I wonder is that the reason why you try to dismiss Olivers record or is it just because he's "disgusting" to you?

You seem to be very good at sitting behind a PC and criticising pool players and pool in general. Do you play pool, are you a proper pool player?

I'd like to be a proper player full time but I just can't find a sucker to support me! :(

Don't you agree that this was a little off the subject matter, and a lot below the belt?
