Overcoming Contenderosis

Has anyone listened to these tapes to help not be so nervous when playing? It seems like the older I've gotten the more shaky I've become. What do you do if you haven't tried these tapes? I saw them at the BCA State Tournament in Columbus, OH this weekend and even though it sounded good I didn't want to pay 99 dollars for something that may not work.

Hi Joe,
I used these (overcoming contenderosis) over 10 years ago and I think they helped alot. My mental abilities are the weakest part of my game (I'm older too). I was able to focus better. I have also tried hypnosis and that worked well too.
I would say buy them, play in a tournament then pm and let me know what you think.

I bought and tried them, but found only one or two of the ten sessions to be helpful. However, I think you can get better results by modifying one or more of these sessions and making your own recordings that more closely track with your situation. That's what I did, and have definitely noticed the improvement.

I think that a major part of the game falls into the "mental" arena, but, I think you can address the mental part of the game with a physical change.

Try this consciously, it can't hurt, and who knows, this may be something that just might work for you. Aim more slowly stopping your cue tip at the cue ball for final adjustments. Then, (and this is the key) very consciously shorten your backstroke some, and lengthen your forward stroke some. Do this smoothly and with a softer touch. See if this doesn't help overcome your contenderosis some. I'd be curious to know if it helped. It has helped others I've mentioned it to quite a bit.

That is the way I shoot until I get the shakes. Then when I try to stop my tip at the cue ball my arm is shaking so bad I can't hold it still. So, I just go ahead and shoot before I have a minor heart attack and of course I miss because it is like trying to hit a moving object.

The tapes work very well. Ryan Elliot is a very good friend of mine, and he worked very hard to ensure the effectiveness of these tapes.

Hypnosis is not a one time deal - you must listen to the tapes on a daily basis and take them seriously. I highly recommend these tapes - they are available through bebo publishing - which is Bob Henning's website.

I think they are good. I have the set but haven't listened to them in a few years. When I start playing competitively again, even if it's only at the local or regional level, {not that I ever did anything else ;)} I'll get them out again.

Thanks for your help. Almost everyone seems to think it has helped so I might as well take the plunge and see if I can get over the nerve thing.
