Overlap Contact Point Aiming

SmoothStroke:
Some say to never look at the pocket or the back of the pocket. I always look at the pocket and the back of the pocket, the black; I see my track more clearly and align accordingly.
I think the advice to not use the back of the pocket comes in response to those who say they look at the middle of the back of the pocket - which is usually not the same as midway between the points (the real target). Using "the black" is common, I think - it's a handy easy-to-see visual for keeping the pocket in your peripheral view while aiming.

Ralph Kramden:
SS... I always look at the center of the pocket first... from the OB to between the pocket points.
I'll then pick an exact spot at the back of the pocket where the OB will miss both pocket points.
This version of "back of the pocket" is OK - it's an extension of the midway-between-the-points target. It's easier for me to keep the points themselves in sight, but I guess that's personal preference.

I didn't start playing regularly (several times a week) until about 20 years ago. Since I retired a few years ago I've reached obsessive-compulsive level, playing just about every day.

Is that practicing or competing, just curious. Happy you got a chance to retire and have the freedom to play

pj.. I know this extension of the midway-between-the-points target sounds like overkill.
I do have a reason to do it on my table. Point to point is only 4 1/4". If I even touch the
near point the ball won't drop. Looking at the extension point gives me a clean view to
the side of the pocket I need to favor. I know the side but need to hit toward the facing.
It's a tough table. I like it that way. Ball speed drop is no problem, if you hit the pocket.
