The world’s finest and brightest cue artists display their wares anew this shore starting Feb. 15 when the 10-Ball World Cup unfurls at the SM Mall in General Santos City.

Sanctioned by the World Pool Association and sponsored by World Boxing Organization welterweight champion and billiards enthusiast Manny Pacquiao the prestigious 12-day classic, spread until February 26, will see no less than 100 of the world’s top players, headed by reigning titlist Niels Faijen of The Netherlands.

Also expected to vie for honors and riches in the tournament giving away a total $200,000 purse are Chang Yu Lung of Taiwan, Shane Van Boening of the United States, Li Hewen of China and Dennis Orcullo of the Philippines, who made up the top 5 best in the WPA ranking.

Also in the field, according to organizing committee member Ishi Caparras, are Albin Ouschan of Australia, Carlo Biado, also of the host country, Nick Ekonolmopouios of Greece, another Filipino Johan Gonzales and Chang Jung Lin of Taipei, who are ranked sixth to 10th in the world ranking.

Filipino pool legend Efren “Bata” Reyes, singles winner of the recent MP 10-Ball International championship held only last December, fellow former world champions Francisco “Django” Bustamante, Ronnie Alcano and Fil-Canadian Alex Pagulayan have all confirmed their participation.

Raymund Faraon, Warren Kiamco and Jeffrey Ignacio, also listed in the world’s top 20 players, along with MP International doubles champions Jordan Legaspi and Romeo Sevillano are also sure bets, Ms. Caparras assured during last Saturday’s Sports Sabado At Iba Pa radio program.

Outside of the top 100 world ranked pool aces, at least the best players from each billiards-playing countries not ranked by the WPA are seeded in the tournament proper scheduled Feb. 17-21, Ms. Caparras announced during the program, sponsored by Philippine sports Commission and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

“A two-day qualifying round Feb. 15-16 among the non-seeded campaigners where Pacquiao, a congressman representing Sarangani Province, precedes the World Cup proper,” Ms. Caparras said.

Ms. Caparras added though that the eight-division world boxing champion, who arrived yesterday from a three-week trip in the U.S. and England, is definitely vying for honors in the doubles side event set after the singles phase Feb. 22-26.

The two-tiered World Cup, according to Pacquiao in an earlier interview with this writer before embarking on his U.S.-Great Britain sojourn, is his way of projecting GenSan as a tourist attraction besides helping the sport relive its glory days here in the 80s and 90s.

Top prizes of $40,000 each await the singles and doubles winners.

With all these champions confirming they will be here, I am guessing the Chuck Markulis Memorial and the US Bar Table Championships in Reno will be lacking in top talent this year. Shane, Dennis, Francisco and Efren usually attend the Bar Table tournament in Reno.

Shane is also on the entry list for the Bar-Table Championships. I wonder which is correct? Or, will he be able to do a bit of each?

It's great someone like Manny is funding new events in the PI, has he no concern for long running tournament like CSI's Bar Box 8, 9, and 10 ball? People might start calling him Bonus Ball instead of Pacman. Johnnyt

... By the way are they playing call obvious shots (Bar Rules) at the 10-Ball WC ???

I doubt it. Since it's now a WPA event, I imagine they'll use WPA rules.

That must-call-the-10-regardless rule was used in the singles of the MP Cup back in December (affecting Van Boening and Biado), but wasn't that rule dropped for the ensuing doubles event?

Even Anton Raga struggling to qualify into main draw of 128 players. That shows just how strong the main draw field will be.

Cebu cue artists remain hopeful
CEBUANO billiard master Warren Kiamco and upstart Boots Augusto are among the 14 Filipinos who will be playing in the main draw of the 2015 World Ten Ball Billiard Championship slated on Feb. 17-21 in Gen. Santos City.

Kiamco, who just pulled a masterful victory over Canadian-based Alex Pagulayan in the 9-Ball Division of the 17th Annual Derby City Classic in Indiana last week, was among the seeded players who automatically got into the main draw, while Augusto went through the qualifying tournament that was held last week in Manila.

Augusto and Ruben Cuña will carry the colors of the Team Cebu City in this international tournament. Cuña also came through the same qualifying tournament in Manila.

However, two more Cebuano talents are hoping to gain entry into the main draw – Anton Raga and Ciriaco “Eljun” Abellana Jr., through the final two qualifying rounds that will be held in Gen. Santos City on Feb. 15 and 16.

According to Cebu City Sports Commission commissioner Lorenzo Sy, who helped bankroll the team’s participation, Raga and Abellana are raring to make the main draw where the top players in the world have also qualified.

“Sayang to ang performance ni Abellana kay he was a rack away from clinching a slot to the main draw twice only to lose. Meanwhile, Anton is still groping for form but we are not losing hope. He is still our best bet and I hope he will finally get out of his slump and make the main draw,” Sy said.

Aside from Kiamco, the other top Filipino cue masters who were qualified into the main draw includes Dennis Orcullo, Carlo Biado, Johann Gonzales Chua, Raymond Faraon, Warren Kiamco and Jeff Ignacio.

While those who have qualified along with Augusto and Cuña last Jan. 29 were Angelo Ariola, Dante Razalan, Baseth Mapandi, Jomel Sultan, William Millares and Roland Garcia.

And CSI's money is no good? A lot of pros have got nice payouts over the years and now there going to abandon the CSI BB tournaments to play in a new tournament 1000's of miles away. Before Bonus Ball had money problems, everyone was on there case about why they had play dates same time as big U.S tournaments. But famous boxer gets a pass. Johnnyt

It's a WPA sanctioned World Championship. I can't imagine it will not be played under World Standardized rules.

It has gotten to the point where there is no telling what will be used. The WPA 9 Ball Championships they had in 2013 used the dumb Matchroom break rules of 3 balls past the head string rather than the standardized rules. Can't remember if I even watched it last year to see what they were using.

No, he probably has zero concern about other events. Probably has no idea another event is even going on. Even if he did, would have gone through with his, anyway.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of cooperation between entities in professional pool.

The 2014 WPA World 9-Ball Championship also used that illegal break rule -- at least 3 balls must be pocketed or pass the head string.

Maybe if Manny had checked a calendar first he wouldn't be holding a 10 ball tournament without one of the best 10 ball players in the world.

I'm just sayin'...
