I just heard that sometimes paper is used as veneers. I asked what type of paper and was told construction paper. Is this true and if so what is the advantage of doing that for the cuemaker and the buyer?

I don't know what I mean JoeyInCal. I was told it was construction paper?

I doubt it.
Some have been made with balsa.
Most are sycamore or maple.

That is what I thought and had never heard of the paper thing. That's why I'm turning to the experts here.

maybe they mean Micarta?

Phenolic and a special paper, we use it as an Ivory substitute for ionlays and veneers. It was developed as an electrical insulator years ago.

Not sure it's just called 'black paper' veneer.

They Were For Sale At Atlas Billiards. I Don'y Know If They Still Have Them.

Phenolics are constructed from a base impregnated with phenolic resin under heat and pressure. There were and are many bases such as linen, canvas, asbestos and paper. Many use the ivory colored paper base phenolic as a substitute for real ivory. There is also black pigmented paper base phenolic that many use in place of ebony in inlays and deco-rings. Atlas sells it.

I saw some sites online recently that had both paper and phenolic backed veneers, and was kind of wondering Myself if anyone had used these or knew of anyone using them in cues? I wasn't sure if it was feasable or not, just crossed My mind when I saw them. Greg

It seems like atlas used to carry the paper to me also. I don't think I ever bought any though.

J&J once sold Me some black wood veneer, but that was a long time ago.

Yeah Those are really thin looking. I wonder if the veneers were sealed to prevent bleeding, If a black glue used only in those layers would have a simular look to that.

Yep I think so!!

I use the .031" often for veneers. They also have Ivory Micarta.
I use them when I can "cause they cut cleaner and have crisper edges
than wood veneers.
Is this the "Paper" veneer you heard about??

That sounds like it!! I didn't see it. I was told about from a seller on ebay and I had just never heard of it. They were black so that must be it. Thanks.

Those papers from Atlas are .031" thick (thinnest ones). The veneers in the cue are .036" thick. If I had used that paper from Atlas, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two.

The glue also wasn't died black. If it was, I doubt the lines would appear straight as the glue would seep into the grain of the veneers and make a mess.

Tony,
That is one really nice cue! I like the thin black between the colors. Very nice work.
