Parica v.s Reyes

Some of my friends told me that from the 1970s to the mid-1990s, Parica was far better than Reyes and that he beat Reyes countless times, especially in money matches. I am not sure about this fact, so could you please tell me what happened during that time?
Thanks so much in advance.

Jose is, I think, 6 years older than Efren.

It could be that when they played during that era, Jose's game had already blossomed and Efren's was still in development.

Both players are world-class champions. That's for sure! :)

I'm not sure about this since Efren himself said that he was at his peak when he was about 17-18 years old. So I don't think age would affect their games during 1980s and 1990s.

Jose Parica was the first Filipino Super Star to hit the States, and so his victories would be more well known, in the United States at least, than Efren's during that era.

However, once Efren did come to America, he wasn't playing Jose. Rather, he was playing quite a few others and took this country by storm.

Parica was the first of the Filipino Invasion, as we Americans fondly call it.

I think if you were to ask Efren and Jose the question, it would be interesting to hear their responses, as opposed to hearsay from others. ;)

I remember when Parica first came over, all you heard about was how he was beating all the American players and spotting them. I didn't hear of Efren until much later. I'm not sure if he was better then or just the first to come over though.

From stories batted around, Parica was the top money player in the country for a while (Philipines not US). A bit tough to get a true history of money matches, not often are there credible witnesses, pre TAR days. If you are talking in the US only, I am not sure if Parica beat on Rayes as much.

Thanks everyone for your reply.
Some new info about Efren: He just came to my country about a week ago and still played incredibly well. I am not sure why he did not show up often this year but if he still plays like the way he did it last week, I think he can dominate this game for quite a long time.

BD with Parica

Jose is definitely the "Rodney Dangerfield" of the Phillipines. According to an interview with him in BD a few years ago, he gets no respect. He's a money player more so than a tournament player and in the eyes of the government folks, it is not look favorably upon. Reyes is more of a tournament player and is known for his great victories in tournaments, so they turn a blind eye to his money matches. Parica tells a story that Efren caught up with him in a pool room in the Phillipines and wanted to play. Parica did not have his cues but played him anyway. Reyes beat him and the next thing you know, all over the Phillipines the word was out that Efren beat Jose.

This is according to Jose.

Can't remember the issue but it is Billiards Digest and Jose is on the cover.

If I remember when I get home, I will find it and post the issues month and year.

This has been hashed out on here countless times and you can probably get some good additional information by doing a search. As I recall, many people say it is true, and just as many say it isn't. They are all equally credible. If I recall, there are also people that say that Jose himself said it is true, and people that say that Efren said it is not true.
