Passing it on

About a year ago I was finishing up my workout at our local Y. I decided to check out the new pool tables that they had put in the new youth room. As I went in, there was a young kid ( 9 years old) walking out. He looked a little depressed but I didn't say anything.

As I started to leave I saw the kid talking to his parents (who I know), it turns out that the older kids wouldn't let him play because he wasn't good enough. This really bothered him because the Y was the only place he could play. So I told his dad if the kid wanted, I would teach him how to play for free.

So for almost a year he has been working hard and showing allot of improvement. I got his confidence up enough to enter a under 16 pool tournament in which he placed second! I was really happy for him but the real reward was seeing him beat the kid that told him he wasn't good enough to play!He is now the best young player that frequents the Y.

This last year has been pretty good for me, I have won some tournaments, got 1st place in the local legends contest (a online talent contest) and set a new personal record for highest amount of prize money in a year, but this is without a doubt the highlight for me. To see the smile on that kids face when he beat his nemesis, now that's true success.

that's fkn awesome for the kid!! he's learned some valuable life lessons from you.

To tell you the truth I probably learned more from him! It's amazing how much you can learn about your own game by trying to teach someone else.

That's true. I've found the same thing teaching a retired guy that never played before. I wish I could find the opportunity to pass on what I know to a younger generation as you did. It's beneficial to both parties in more than just billiards. You did right & good! I'm glad you were wlking in when he was walking out. Sounds like a timing shot to me that worked out just right.

Wonderful thing you did for the young man.......unless he becomes a pro when he grows up.

Absolutely Awesome! The world needs more people like you. If every Adult would decide to help one child in some way, such as you did, during the span of their life, how much better would this world we live in be?

Green for ya. And good on you Buddy.
I like feel good stories and I really like this one. Good that the young fella beat the big mouth. I bet he felt real good about that one.
You should be proud as well.

I grew up being bullied a bit until I figured out how to handle myself a bit better.
I know exactly how this young guy felt being left out. Not a nice feeling. You helped him over come that
and ya know what, you probably made a huge difference in his life that will last forever, whether you know it or not.

great story, and great that you found a kid who really wanted to learn and stick with it.

I sometimes run into people who want to get better, but only if it involves no practice or work whatsoever!

Ever see Pay it Forward? Great movie. The best rewards in life involve
doing for some one else. Its Gods message.:grin-angelic::angel:

The kid will never forget you. There is a time in ours lives when someone asks....Where & how did you learn how to play.
