Let's just say I am playing someone cheap $10 per game. Or $20 per game whatever it may be. I want to pay off after every game. That's just me. I want to pay or get paid after every game. Number one I like to pay after every game because I don't like holding anyone's money I don't care if it's a quarter I don't like to owe anyone it doesn't sit right with me mentally. Furthermore, if I am winning and pulverizing somebody then I like them to FEEL going in their pocket about 5 or 6 or 7 times in a row. That is mentally demoralizing to my opponent. Gambling is more than just about money as some of you know. It definitely has a mental aspect. Let's just say you are up 4 games at $20 per game if the person has already given you $80 they feel much worse about their situation than they do let's just say if yall say pay off at $100. In the latter scenario he knows he owes you but he feels like he has a chance to come back because it's not REAL yet. But if he has paid you 4 times in a row the hole seems much more enormous to him.✔

You're kinda right, but depending who you're playing that can be VERY disrespectful

@bmoremoney
I can see why but one thing about it even a slickster has to respect someone straight up If I Lose I'm going to pay you right now if I win I'm going to get paid right now. It doesn't come more square than that

I agree with you 100 percent,it's the only way to gamble as far as I'm concerned. When you play by the game you can win a guys car, meaning they'll go empty.

Not aways appropriate to pass money every game, more so , got a " buddy " that has 20 - 30 grand I his pocket and expect him to pay for a honey or whatever? Please. On top of that if you are someone that ALWAYS gets paid if you know then it's totally fine to run the coin.

Good luck getting action... Not sure of your age but you have a lot to learn about gambling at pool...

I've played pool for more than 50 years and worked in a pool hall. I've always played pay-as-you-play.

The only times I've ever had some shit break out is when people "owed" me for games and wanted to keep playing "on the tab". That is fine sometimes if you know the person and their action, but when playing with strangers, I prefer the money be paid as it is won or lost.

Agree... in fact the money should be up front, held by a "neutral" party...

^^^^^this. I No longer nor have not in a long time " play strangers " . I have nothing to prove, I wanna gamble, and if I win win I wanna WIN. I know their games and I know they got money and I know they will lose it. Small circle? Sure. But a good circle.

Pay to play

It's the only way - old expression "cash on wood"
Meaning you loose put my cash on the rail.

Races are ment for the track???

I think your the one that needs to learn about gambling at pool.Races are meant for the track.

Watch Dennis O and T-Rex play a race for a tidy amount and they weren't at the track!

If think you can win you play the game your asked to play the way your asked to play it and get the cash.

Another way to think of it...,

It's the only way - old expression "cash on wood"
Meaning you loose put my cash on the rail.

We always said "Money on the wood is good" meaning we don't play to the Money is posted, lay it on the wood and rack'm

Cash on the light makes the game right, "no post, no play".

Well that depends doesn't it?

Maybe pay after a race to 5 for $50-100, but after every game is silly.

Played King of the Hill as they called it, we use to call it a challenge table, winner calls the beat, put your quarter ($1.00) up.

Well paying after every game in these places is the norm and it spilled over to match play as well, so its common to see people paying off after every game in Texas and Mexico, nothing silly about it.

Paying off every game is usually the best policy
especially with people you don't know

but it is seldom works when making a large score

few people lose $10,000 or more paying off every game

Where does anything in my statement mention a "race"...
My point is, one person can't control the situation. Both agree on a certain way, or it doesn't happen. Most of the time I am playing for cash is with guys I know. I try to win with my skill. Not trying to play with their head...

Here's a copy-and-paste about a true story that happened with me, Keith McCready, and Larry Liscotti.

I almost hesitate to post this, but it's a true story about an air barrel, my first experience with a player by the name of Keith McCready. It all happened in Maryland at the Capital City Classic tournament.

I had been away from pool for at least 15 years or more. I ran into an old pool friend at Montgomery Mall who invited me to this pool tournament in Maryland. I really didn't want to go, truth be told, but he was insisting I should come and see the old gang. So I agreed to meet him there at a designated time.

As my luck would have it, I arrived at the parking lot of the hotel and received a phone call from him on my cell, stating he had to work late and couldn't make it. I almost didn't go in, but I was there, and so I figured I'd at least check it out.

I was kind of nervous, figuring I wouldn't know anybody, but much to my surprise, as soon as I walked in, I recognized the tournament director, Dennis Wilson, who warmly greeted me with a hug. When I walked into the ballroom, I saw Fat Wayne from Baltimore, Timmy Crown, Tom-Tom, Drug Fair, Parks. Soon I was feeling comfy sitting on the rail, sweating the matches with my pool buddies.

I went outside to smoke a cigarette, and out walks a player I recognized but had never met. It was Keith McCready. I initiated the conversation as we were puffing our smokes. He and I had a good friend in common which was Geese. Up walks this short man, and Keith introduced me to him as his road partner. I said, "I'm glad to meet you, Jose. Do you play pool too?" He chuckled, looked at Keith, and said yes. Later that week, Jose Parica won the tournament, BTW.

Keith and I went inside together. He had a friend with him named Larry Lisciotti who kept me in stitches laughing all night long. Larry, Keith, and myself were a threesome, it would seem. I was actually having a good time, laughing it up at Larry and Keith. What a combo!

The three of us stepped into an elevator and in walks this cocky blond-haired kid named Pistol Pete. He looked right at Keith and said, "You want to play some 9-ball?" Keith looks at him and says, "Well, sure. How do you want to play?" thinking he'd want a spot. The kid says, "I know exactly who you are, and I'll play your ass even for 100 bucks a game."

Well, Keith was, shall I say, on the shortskies for funds. Larry and I had some dough, and so we backed Keith 50/50. Keith wins the first game, and the kid immediately racks them. Larry says to me, "Did he get paid?" I said, "I don't know. I didn't see any money change hands." The second game, Keith wins it easy. The kid wastes no time and racks them again. This time, I said to Larry, "I don't see Keith getting paid." Larry walks over to Keith and asks him where's the cheese. Keith said the kid was going to pay him as soon as he got change. I'm thinking WTF. Change? It's $100 a game. Larry then instructed Keith to demand to be paid after the next game.

Keith again wins, and it was the third game. Pistol Pete walks over to his case on the rail, packs it up, and scurries out of the ballroom like a snake making a quick get-away. Well, Larry and me jump up and run after him, with Keith in the rears.

Outside in the lobby, a heated colloquy ensued. Pistol Pete says he ain't got no money and there ain't nothing any of us can do about it. I thought Larry was going to kill him. I was giving him a verbal lashing. However, Keith was calm as a cucumber. He listened to Pistol Pete intently, while me and Larry were hammering away at him with our anger. Keith then said to him, "Look, Kid, you shouldn't do that to people. It's okay. You can leave, but don't ever do that again to anybody, you hear?"

I was in disbelief, as was Larry. I didn't understand Keith's reaction then, but I do today. It is Keith's interpretation of that kid's air barrel that is the real meat of this story. Anybody else would have tarred and feathered the kid, but Keith only saw a young'n who wanted to play a good player for the thrill of it at all costs, even if it meant an air barrel.

Oh, BTW, we did run into Pistol Pete several months later in Baltimore. We walked into Bill and Billie's, and he was gambling with Danny Green, a local pool great, on the front table. You should have seen his eyes when he saw me and Keith walk in! What happened then, though, is a story for another thread! :grin-square:
