PayPal Horror Stories

i have paypal, they've been pretty good for a long time.
then... it happens!
in the red for almost 2 months, jumped through every hoop they put in front of me,
updated telephone number, updated address, sent in my driver license + electric bill + soc sec info,
updated banking info, then finally after almost 3hrs on telephone my account opens.
but wait... the next day, they ask again for bank info and want another photocopy of my driver license.
DO YOU HAVE A PAYPAL HORROR STORY, please post.

I have never had any problems with PAYPAL, but I do know if I do and they ask me for the things that they asked you, I wouldn't provide and drop out of PAYPAL. No way are the getting my social security information.

Sounds a lot more like you just helped someone steal your identity.

Not a total horror story, but....

I had some PayPal charges show up on my credit card, once, and I don't even have PayPal account. I told the credit card company, and they took care of it.

But a month later, PayPal reversed the charges, and credited my account. So that gave me some free money in my credit card account. Of course, it wasn't my money, so I called the credit card company and told them to give it back to PayPal. That seemed to confuse everyone.

No one could figure out how to correct the problem. Three months later, it finally got fixed.

I never thought trying to give away money would be so difficult.

I had a fairly shitty experience with PP about 6 yrs. ago.

Someone in South Africa purchased airline tickets to Yemen using my Paypal account.

The cost was $2600.00...WTF?

At that time, I had my regular checking/debit account linked to my PP. account, and well, stuff started bouncing.I did'nt find out for 2-3 days......Logged into my checking account, and yikes:eek:

Bank straightened it out immediately, covered all fees, but told me it happens ALL THE TIME.....WTF?

Banks suggestion, was to add another checking account, and only use that for any Online/PP purchases. I still don't know how they were able to pull it off.

So.... just a heads up if your pp/checking are linked.....get a second account, and keep it simple.

After ten years of no problems, I'm having one now.

I updated my log-in, email address (old one is inoperative) and phone number (no longer have a land line).

Now I can't log into my account. Neither the new or old log in works.

Support is nearly non-exisitent; phone support means an automated voice will tell you where to go on the website. No human to talk to. Email support tells me the solution is to: "Step 1: log into your account..."

Dummies! The problem is that I can't log into my account!

I agree as well. OP should go to paypal.com, find the contact information and call them. I bet there is a 90% chance Paypal never asked for any of this stuff and he got caught in a phishing scam.

And for those of you who don't know - DO NOT EVER follow links sent to by email purporting to be from your bank, paypal, the government etc. Instead, go directly to the relevant website. The scam emails direct you to a webpage that looks just like your bank (or whatever) but is totally fake - they then extract your account info, your passwords, your money...

I recently was sent money from a fellow az member and while I could see the completed transaction in my account the money was nowhere to be found. I talked to the sender n he confirmed he sent it but told me it hadn't been withdrawn from his account. I called and after a few auto message redirects I left a message n they called back within 5 mins.(this was great because they don't keep u on hold instead they save ur spot and call u within 5 mins) after talking to a rep I was informed they were updating software or some technology and it was slowing transactions and she reassured me that I'd receive the money in my account in a few days and within a day it was there and everything was fixed.

Just wanted to say support was helpful

I managed to go without pay pal till this year, then needed it for something. Imo, to open up a regular account they wanted too much info and I didn't want to give out all that stuff. Just get one of those reload able pay pal cards they sell just about everywhere and go to town. You still have to verify acount but much less hassle and no bank info linked to it.

Paypal is a great blessing to the individual sellers. It allows private parties to have a bona fide merchant account without going through all the hoops most commercial vendors and banks will put you through.

That said, I've never had a problem with paypal in over 10 years of transactions. I don't use it much anymore but I use it when given the choice. When I do it's been fine.

The great benefit as a buyer using paypal is that merchants who take paypal do not have your personal credit card accounts on file. I've not had my credit cards used in fraud, unlike my wife, who has had 3 or 4 credit cards with fraudulent charges due to merchant hacking (she does not use paypal).

I get that stuff all the time in my inbox, but i always click the link at i look at the web address while the page loads, it always turns out to be a scam page.

I had one bad experience when I paid for something and then the seller had excuses why he couldn't ship immediately and I let him delay until after the claim period. I think there are stronger protections in place now. I should have cancelled the payment as soon as there was an issue, I suppose, but I wanted the item. Live and learn.
