Paypal paying as gift

I hate it when I see someone asking to be paid through Paypal as a gift.

DO NOT DO THIS.

Unless you know the person and know they will not screw you over do not under any circumstances do this.

If the seller wants to be paid through Paypal they want to use a service. If they have a problem paying the fees associated with said service find another way of payment.

If someone pays you as a gift there is absolutely no way to guarantee that you will ever see the item. It won't hold up in a court of law either.

If you buy a $50,000 item through Paypal and you send payment as a gift the person on the other side can just walk away with your money without any legal consequences.

I give people the option to either pay as a gift, or pickup the fees. When I purchase something, I will usually pay as a gift provided that they have solid feedback. If they are newer or have limited feedback, I go ahead and pickup the fees myself for the extra security.

I would never use PayPal for a 50k item purchase ;)

In general it's a good rule but like all rules there will always be exceptions.

Depends on trader history, personal knowledge, what other forms of payment are available... etc.

I ask people to pay me as a gift, but I know that I am not going to screw anyone. I pay for insurance and if the item is not received they will get their money back.

If someone is not comfortable with that, they can pay the fees. I am 100% certain that the buyer will not be out anything when buying something from me.

Common sense goes a long ways.......................
There are people that will try to rip you off no matter what you do.
And other people who wouldnt allow you to over pay them.

Totally agree with the original poster. If you are using the service, you (or the buyer) should pay for that service. I have asked to be paid as a gift once or twice before, but after reflecting on it, I decided it's not the right thing to do - so no more.

I never considered the "legal" aspects of it. Forget going to court, but just making a claim with Paypal would never hold up if you paid for something as a gift. So another good point by the OP.

I have been paid as a gift for things when I didn't even ask it to be done. I guess I just took the easy way in those cases and rolled with it. (For what it's worth, the thing about paying as a gift is that the buyer's address is not sent along to the seller. Then the seller has the extra step of asking for the buyer's address in order to ship the item.) I think even in this situation, from now on, I'd rather refund the gift and ask the buyer to resend payment the proper way. Although I can appreciate the gesture of the buyer, it's the right thing to do and keeps services that we rely on in business.

Agreed. I would never screw anyone and I probably go overboard in description, as noted on my ebay acct ( 100% @ 581). I cant stand buying something only to have it shows up different. If something is $100 you can send me $100 gift or send me $103.50 so I still get get the $100 I ask. Personally I never eat fees, I dont see stores eating tax for me. Imho its kinda a private sales tax lol.

You people are misunderstanding what PayPal is. It is a business that provides a service. If you choose to use it you have to pay for the service. If you want that price incorporated into the end price so the buyer takes the hit instead of you then do just that.

It doesn't matter how trustworthy you think you are. The world doesn't know you and doesn't care. If the person does know you then go right ahead and ask for a gift as payment.

Not really sure why someone would even argue this to be honest.

I have a newer Moochy that you could steal from me for $1,200
...comes with a Western Family 1x2 case and TOI shaft.

I only accept paypal and please send as a gift.

I really hate it when I see someone ask to send through Paypal as a gift. There is literally no protection for the buyer when a payment is sent as a gift. Unless you know the person and know they wont mess with you this should never, ever be done.

I understand people want this done so they dont get charged through Paypal but that is just part of the game if you want to use Paypal.

This wouldn't have anything to do with my Moochy cue now, would it?

Well I did it on 1 out of my 2 transactions on here. I figured I should develop some sort of rapport since I'm relatively new and as a sign of good faith. However, my purchase was less than a $100 so I figured if I get screwed it's not that big of a hit. For purchases above $100 I think it would be smart to have that extra security.

Good thread. I did not understand what Paying as a Gift was...this clears it up.
I agree with the OP. If you use a service pay for it. We can afford nice cues & accessories. We can certainly afford small fees for services.

When you use a credit or debit card the store does "eat the fees". I guess you just don't see that?
