I was watching the live stream of the Swanson memorial tournament yesterday. Efren was at the table and someone took a picture with a flash bulb. Efren hides it well but you could tell it bothered him a little.

I wonder if people just don't know any better or just don't care.
 
Those pocket cameras are sneaky, they'll flash if you are NOT vigilent about turning it off. They default to "flash on" in 'auto' mode, so accidents happen with them...ask me how I know. :)

DSLR's are another story though as you generally have to deliberately flip up the flash.

correct on both counts - half don't know any better and the other half doesn't care :(

All of that was superseded when the gunpowder tray was invented. It's a little tray with a handle attached underneath; you pour a little gunpowder in it, and there's a little trigger that lowers a lever with a lit match. Press the trigger, and <poof!> -- instant flash!

Now you're really showing your age.... I've seen the big flash, in the movies, or maybe the Three Stooges....
