Performance shafts and butt choice

What are the preferred butt choices for a great playing cue when using Predator or OB shafts?
Why does it seem that most players mix and match rather than use the shaft makers butt?
Any suggestions on a good butt/joint for an OB Classic?

Old Runde Schon + Z2. It's hard to find something better.
Just my €0,02 cents.

I actually was wondering this same thing. Thinking of getting an ob-1 and curious what people had it matched to.

An old Schon R-15 with a Lucasi Hybrid Zero Flex is what I've been using. It is hard to beat the feel of the old Schons!!

If it works for you- super :)

But to talk about the *Schon Feeling* if you re playing with a laminated shaft on it sounds a bit strange. The hit and the feeling of a Schon with non-laminated shaft is totally different than playing with a laminated shaft on it.

just my 2 cts.

I have had my OB-1 on 5 different butts. Besides the balance point.....they all played the same. Right now I'm playing with the OB-1 on a Kaiser cue ($75)....plays the same as on my expensive customs.

I think the butt doesn't play as big a part as the joint and the shaft. When deciding to get a Z2 shaft I tried out some of my friends cues and and they all had the quick release joints and they all played the same to me but they were all different brands.

I think people like the brand they have become accustomed to. I recently bought a Predator Sneaky Pete with a Z2 and I love the way it plays. If money was not an object I might have bought a Schon and matched it to a Z2 shaft just because I like the way those cues look and I know they are quality cues.

With all that said I still think it is mainly the joint you have become accustomed to and the shaft you are most comfortable with. IMO Predator does make the best shaft and the Z2 is a miracle shaft.

I've got a OB1 on a Schon stl7 butt and I love it. I've kinda got the same feeling as one of the above posters that the butt doesn't matter that much. It's figuring out what kind of joint you like with the performance shaft.

What about an OB Cue?

I know it's a shameless plug, LOL!

We actually have many different models to choose from. Even some that are not on our website. Also, the price on our website is the list price. Actually, it's the old list price as we are in the process of a reducing our cue prices.

Call me on Monday and I can get you some pics of new things we have and the prices. Google can find them too from our dealers. You can't get a better price than what most of our dealers are selling them for.

Thanks

It seems that any butt will do unless I'm missing something. Why buy a new cue if performance is the same? Does a performance shaft maker do anything to make his shafts perform better with his butts?

Well, I would say yes, we do.

Don't get me wrong, a larger portion of playability is in the shaft, and not the butt, but there are many things that can be done to enhance the performance of the cue shaft.

We designed our cues with our cue shafts in mind. We played with many different styles and designs (all on the inside) to come up with what we feel is the best compliment to our cue shafts.

Now, there are many different preferences in how a cue feels, but we think we have the best combination for our cue shafts. Our cues are cored all the way from the joint to the bumper. What this does is give them just the right amount of stiffness in just the right places.

Call me tomorrow and we can talk about it.

Me, too. Sort of. I've tried mine on a Camargo Red Cues custom, a $10 junk cue, and a 1985 Joss J-12, among others. There are some subtle differences, but nothing magical.

What are the preferred butt choices?

I like it to be round, and have a little substance to it. I can't stand those flat ones that are barely noticeable. I don't need to be able to set a drink on it, but I at least want to be able to see it in jeans from across the room. It's gotta have presence.

We're talking about asses right?

I have a lambros that the LD shaft was made with it... so it has the ultra joint. You hands down wont find a better hitting combination.

I'd take the pepsi challange any old day of the week.

I've played with a 314, 314-2, Z, Z-2, and I-3 for the past 10 years. The butts have been Predator Sneaky, Predator Plane Jane, Predator BK1 Butt, Joss Butt, Tim Scruggs Custom Butt.

My current combo for the past 2 yrs or so has been Tim Scruggs Butt with 314-2. I didn't have any Butts left with my Predator shaft joint (had broke them all, lol) so I took the Scruggs out of the closet.

In all those combinations, they all played about the same to me.

I have two playing cues. A Dale Perry with a McDermott I-3. Has a great balance and plays great. I also use a Schon CX-06 with a McDermott I-3 which also plays great. Very little difference between the two. I've tried an OB-2 which plays well but the ferrule is a distraction to me - I prefer the I-3. The Schon with the Schon shaft also plays well but I like the 11.75mm diameter of the I-3 and the european taper. Reading over the other comments in this thread it's apparent that it's a personal preference as to which shaft one likes. There may or may not be minor differences in butts but the shaft seems to make the cue work. Good luck in finding your magic shaft.
