Personal Annoyances

Every time one of the, "Things other people do that annoy me" lists pops up I see some things I know I've done in there. So now I'm curious, not about what other people do wrong, but things you know you've done yourself that make you shake your head.

Talking during a shot: Did this last night, but in all fairness, I was in a conversation with the player, who talked while he shot, then missed his pot. He looked back at me and said, "See, that's why I don't talk during my shots". It's funny because I never do this, it was a slip, but still annoys me that I did it.

Stopping before walking across someone's shot line: I do this all the time, out of respect for the player. If they wave me by I go ahead, but now some have me wondering if it's rude to try to be polite.

Giving advice: Not all the time, not, "Ooh she's a girl, she needs my help!", situations, just in general with friends. I can't help it. Sometimes it's a question (why did you play it that way?), sometimes it's before-hand and just offering an idea when someone looks confused. Not during gambling, not during tournaments, just when guys'n'gals get together. I cringe when I realize I've done it.

4. Says he was "just trying something" after every miss.

Done that, but I usually am trying something, a different grip, different stance, an experiment in aiming. When people ask, "What the Hell was that?" I generally shrug and just say it. Then I realize there's no need for an excuse.

8. Speaks to friends in a foreign language at the table.

Some people prefer French, not my fault. But yes, it's asinine and I feel like a tool for doing it.

9. Takes forever to shoot every shot.

I do complain (inside) when other people take too long and yet I find myself not to be the fastest player on earth. So much for the Golden Rule.

Miscues: I hate that sound and I feel like a newb when it happens. Lots of people have done it, and I want to explain it's not my fault because I was trying something with a Samsara that just didn't work. But damnit, I hate hearing the awful claccccckkk-plinggggg echo across the room.

Picking the wrong shot: Not because I don't know better, but, when I jump and should have kicked, when I kick but a masse would have suited it better. Or when I just hook myself hopelessly after making a 90-degree blind cut, go 3 rails for position and have nothing to show for it.

Excuses: I've made them. Well not excuses, just explained that honestly I really didn't feel like playing and got sucked into it like showing crack to an addict. I could avoid this by not going into the poolhall when I'm tired, but they have beer ... and girls ... and ... it's not my fault ... I do not have an addiction.

I personally would rather people continue walking instead of making an abrupt stop in my field of view. I'm already used to other people at other tables walking around, I can't expect everyone in the room to stay still when I'm playing. So just keep walking and don't linger. Also when you're in the seat you've been sitting in the whole match, don't move when I have a shot in your direction. I already know you're there. Just don't move.

Annoying myself

The thing I do that annoys me the most?

Letting certain people get in my head!

Annoys the crap out of me!

After a game all too often an opponent whines to the winner about how badly he played. Maybe he did, but give the winner a complement about how well he played instead. Keep your whining to yourself, otherwise you just end up sounding like a jerk.

I hate it when people do this. They usually right in my field of view when I'm shooting a tough shot. I usually not so politely indicate that they need to stand somewhere else that is outside of my field of view.

That's literally what I've done, whether it's right or wrong. I get mad when people stand in my field of view when I'm shooting. I have a very different demeanor when I'm playing a match. I'll be playing in a league match, somebody stands within a few feet of me while I'm shooting a tough shot, right into my field of view. It's very distracting and I have lost my temper when it happens.

Awesome. You respond to an ill-informed, but well meaning gesture by being rude.

Cool.

I don't like it, either, but I'm not going to say anything to someone who is trying to be respectful. I might thank them for it and tell them that it doesn't bother me if they simply keep walking next time.

If we're gonna turn this into a flaming/woofing thread, you probably would resort to that tactic to beat me rather than rely on our own skill.

I'd buy drinks for every person who walked into your line of sight and stopped if I ever witnessed you lose your temper over it.

I return insults sometimes. Sometimes I just don't say anything, like if someone says "nice shot, lucky", I'll usually say "thanks" or nothing. But sometimes I say "lucky I'm playing you", or stfu ah.

That reminds me. This guy in the APA, a SL5 in 9-ball, I've played at least 20 times. I was a SL7 at the time. He beat me once when he played really well, but I've beaten him decisively every other match. This idiot misses a point blank shot on the 9-ball. I make the 9-ball, win the match, and he tells me I got lucky. I reminded him of all of the other 20 or so matches that I got "lucky" against him as well and told him I have had a miraculous streak of good luck against him in every one of the 20 other matches where I luckily beat him as well.

Incog...
I always heard the quote was , "This is Poppycock! Up with which I will not put." Not confirmed either though I'm afraid.

I agree, just keep on going. If you stop in my line you have BECOME a distraction and will be dealt with accordingly. Oh, and don't grab the rack while I'm shooting the last ball either. Almost got in a fight over that one. I told him he just conceded the shot and the game was over. The kid stood in front of my last pocket with the rack in his hand waiting for me to make the last ball. When I stood up and questioned him he said, "It's an easy shot", and he expected me to shoot it while he was standing there. Just my $.02

presently i am in panama (the country)...many of the locals have no clue as to wth etiquette is or should be. the other night i was playing an x champion oif the country in 8 ball (their crazy rules and my 1st mistake). i was lining up a long shot on the 8 ball ($35/game) and he stepped in the line of sight and when i dropped dwon to make the shot, so did he, instaed of the the OB i am seeing his beady eyes....i stood up, so did he, so i regrouped and dropped down again, si did he,,,i'm looking at his eyeballs again.the 3rd time i told him one more time and the game was over and he was paying me. that worked and i got paid. later as i was making a shot on the 8, him standing next to the CB and the rail, and a relatively easy shot down the side rail for the corner, just as i was making my last stroke, he banged the butt of the cue against the rail next to the CB. i missed....paid out. but for now, i biggest is the spanish music, which i HATE, being so loud you can't talk to your buddies, much less concentrate. can't wait to rrturn to the usa and only have to deal wqith the smoke filled room.

Ok but I would strongly advise against that tactic for you own personal safety in some of the places I play. ;)

While it is true that I have more money than skill, I'd only do that to you after deciding you were a POS who wouldn't learn from me pointing it out nicely.

That is to say that I doubt it would actually ever happen. I've only done things like that a couple of times and the people I did it to were horrible, horrible people.

Have fun!

I have, on occasion, explained why I missed a shot or got bad position. No one cares and it's a habit I work hard to eliminate.
Example; After the shot I say "Aww, I should have put a little more top right on that and it would have been perfect". I doubt anyone wants to hear what I think I should have done. Take your bad leave like a man!

I don't do this often, in fact hardly at all anymore.

I'm with you 100% on giving advice Ghost. Every time I do it, I always feel like a know-it-all.
I have a couple guys on my league team that just like to shoot balls and see what happens. It drives me nuts on league night as I'm sitting there thinking "DON'T SHOOT THAT BALL!!!" One of the guys is open to advice and the other is a little, shall we say "old school" and stubborn.

I'm the high skill level player on the teams that I've played on, so I do this a lot. But usually when the other player is doing or did something that was obviously wrong strategy wise. Some people like the advise and some people don't.

The person I play with the most is my best friend and the best player in these parts. We hold conversations while we're playing, doesn't really bother either of us. Sometimes I'll ask him why he played a shot that way, or suggest what I would have done. He'll explain it, and a lot of times he'll concede that my suggestion would probably have been better. Other times I'll call him a show-off for going all the way around the table instead of using a stop shot to get the same angle. But like I said, we're good friends, inside and outside the pool room. Neither of us would play anyone else and act the way we do when we play each other.

Letting certain people get in my head!
Annoys the crap out of me!

You know that's probably my number 1 personal pet peeve and yet I blocked it out when I went through the list. After all that time spent on the mental game and yet some silly circumstance will just get in there and knock my hamster off it's wheel.

Grr. Argh.

I hate hate HATE unsolicited advice. This goes for pretty much anything but it drives me nuts when I'm playing pool. During league matches, I have no problem with a teammate calling TO, but random shmoes who think they're God's gift to a barbox drive me crazy.

I need to start hanging out with you :D

Lol, you would have hated last night ... it could have been a movie title, "two girls and a 4" skirt". Oh and there was beer. And they couldn't play pool. There were giggles. It's where the mental game comes in...

I hate hate HATE unsolicited advice.

So do I, but that's the point of the thread, it's dumb crap we all hate, but do ourselves. I know I'm not perfect, and I do stuff that on occasion I cringe at. I hate advice from people who can't play and yet I've given it out (although never to a stranger).
