Hey guys,

I got this PFD Ebony Titlist last week and it came with a cork wrap. I've never had a cue with a cork wrap before and I loved the way it felt but the color really didin't look right on the cue.

Anyway, I posted up in the "ask the cuemaker" forum looking to see if I could dye the cork black. I received a few responses from people who have done it in the past so I decided to give it a try.

It looks much better that the raw cork and still feels awsome. I was a bit concerned about the dye coming off on my hands while I played but so far I've had no issues.

The cue also came with a Westinghouse Micarta joint and ferrules and it plays amazing.

Here are a few pictures. What do you guys think?

The cue looks amazing. knowing that it has a cork wrap.

Did you seal the wrap after the dye with wax or something? I would think perspiration would be an issue if you do not.

I would have wish it had some nicer ring work though. Stitch ring or boti ring work would have been great.

Beautiful cue nonetheless.

Thanks Dean! I'm not sure this one will be for sale anytime soon as it's one of the best cues I've ever played with.

Do you mean why did I not have Paul do the dye job? If so, I didn't want to bother him with such a small job that I felt confident I could do myself. I did email him and asked if he had ever done it and what to expect. This is the response I received.....

"I will be very interested in knowing how the leather dye works out – but keep in mind that the cork is bonded in a neoprene - which is rubber – therefore expecting the dye to penetrate and stay in the cork may be asking a lot."

In his next email, his response was "I am particularly interested in seeing how the black dye works for you. I used the dye sold at ***** leather and it was just “okay” – not great – seems like the dye did not really do a good job of penetrating . . ."

With that I was getting a little skeptical but after I received assurance from someone who had done it I decided to try it and see what happened. I also spoke with the person that does the dyeing at my friends shoe shop where I got the dye from and he didn't forsee it as a problem with the dye he gave me. I am planning on changing it over to leather anyway so if I ruined it it wouldn't have been too big a deal.

As it turned out it worked great. Although it remains to be seen if it will hold up. I should be a very good test too as my hands sweat quite a bit when I play.

I didn't seal it with anything after I dyed it as recommended by the person who gave me the dye. He told me it would be pretty much waterproof after about 24 hours.

I'll post back up after I have some additional paly time with the results.

Ok so I've had about 12 hours play time since the dye job on the wrap. So far no issues what so ever. The dye seems to be holding up very well and I love the way it feels.
