....smc's target market is primarily asians and ...that's the bottom line.

Hi, Countess, hope you're well. It's really not as simple as all that. The profit motive is not enough to legitimize exclusionary policies in business. As for the term target market, it doesn't refer to those to whom a product or service is exclusively intended, but instead to those to whom it is primarily intended.

In retrospect, it's downright disheartening how many baseball team owners argued only sixty years ago that Negro participation in the major leagues of American baseball was just plain old bad business. Many of them truly believed it was so, that it might turn off some of the paying fans. Of course, whether or not they were right, it was no more than a smoke screen for a regrettable bias against those of African descent.

America isn't blemish free, but we sure have grown up a lot since then, and that's why so many professional athletes of all races, nationalities and cultures know to look to the United States for a chance to earn a superior living.

I saw Manny at the Bicycle Club UPA tournament a few weeks ago in LA. Didn't get to see him shoot, but I heard he can play a little.

Hello LastTwo.

I think i should report this to the media here, he shouldnt be in any pool area
but on a boxing ring, preparing for his mega fight against a legendary
mexican Erik Morales. :D

But anyway, Manny shows just shows his strong affections on Pool
and Billiards, and that could be very positive for this sport, but of
course he has to take care of his boxing carreer first :o

But isn't it good to know this two sports if i cant beat you in billiard
maybe we could settle this on our fists...he..he..he
just kidding last two. ;)

Peace.

Just read online today that there was 2 bombing incidents in Manila City...I hope all the pool players are ok...I wonder if the televised matches will be accessible to viewers in the USA?

Actually there were three bombs almost simultaneously, one in Makati
(the very heart of business in the Philippines), and one each in Davao City
and General Santos City (this is where Manny Pacquiao came) both are
from Mindanao region. We have a bloody Valentine's day here. As of last
night there were 4 dead already and 100 injured. But i believe the
perpetrator for this will not go very far. And by the way the bandit
and terrorist Muslim group Abu Sayyaf owned the bombings already.

As for the event/tournament they are shown on TV but not in the
U.S. And on my case i dont have a recorder :(

Please continue to pray for the players as well as the whole Filipino nation
and that the perpetrators for this would soon be caught up with their
own savagery and sinfullness.

First, I hope the bombings stop soon. I hope they get the scumbags who did them.
Manny can play. I saw him shoot some and a friend of mine said Manny played some after the tournament at Parica's old place.
Manny hasn't played since I am told. He has not gone back at that pool place.

Thanks for the update, Cebuano, and I hope you'll keep us posted on the forum. Our thoughts are with you and with all Fillipinos at this moment of inestimable and incomprehensible horror.

Thank you for your info. I do pray for the good people of the Phillippines...I don't understand the killing of innocent people...I hope that terrorism can be defeated no matter where it is in the world...not only is it reprehensible but it is also cowardly IMO.

Erik "El Terrible" Morales vs. Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao

Here's Manny at last month's UPA event at the Bike.
Manny fights Erik Morales on March 19 on HBO PPV.

dscn0821_large.jpg

JoeyInCali, when I went out last night, I looked at my watch and I had thought I missed the BIG FIGHT between Erik Morales and Philippino Manny Pacquiao. Thankfully, it wasn't last night; it's NEXT WEEKEND, Saturday to be exact. I'm going to be at the Super Billiards Expo and will not be able to see this boxing match, as it's on HBO PPV! :(

So, I logged onto my Internet gambling website and decided to check out the props for this upcoming match. I've gotta say that I was shocked to see Manny as the FAVORITE (-130) and Erik as EVEN MONEY.

Super Featherweight Fight - Las Vegas NV - March 19
03/19/05 Erik Morales - Even
23:00 ET Manny Pacquiao -130

AND then there's the over/under odds:

Morales vs Pacquiao - Super Featherweight Fight - Round Prop
03/19/05 Over 10.5 rounds (-105)
23:00 ET Under 10.5 rounds (-135)

It's very RARE in boxing to see the odds this close, as most times, they're lopsided. And then there's Don King.

It really looks to me like this is going to be a fight to the finish. I'm going to make a small wager on Manny Pacquiao for the win and another one on the OVER before the odds change. ;)

Morales is a scrapper, doesn't let up, and won't roll over, but Manny Pacquiao may have the speed on his side, a definite advantage over the long haul (IMO)! Both players do have a demonstrated track record of endurance, though. :)

Read all about it on Manny Pacquiao's website: http://www.mannypacquiao.ph/

honestly i don't consider it unfair. it's legitimate and ethical. san miguel corporation (smc) is a business entity not a philanthropist. i don't think it's after knowing who's the best in the world/asia, neither is it after giving equal opportunity to all pool players to earn. the end of it all is profit. smc's target market is primarily asians and as steve cold austin would put it, it think, "that's the bottom line".

say for instance a company producing infant milk sponsors a competition, i won't be surprised if they will exclude people beyond 2 years of age. maybe this is a ridiculous analogy but i just want to say i think smc will do what will ultimately result to more revenues/profit for them, nothing more noble (i.e. promoting excellence), nothing base (unequal opportunity), just plain business.

My thoughts exactly!

San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour

This is very obvious why San Miguel sponsored this event and it's for profit. Just like any company, they will be very happy to pickup if San Miguel gives it up. There are also many minor sponsors which are Simonis, Aramith and Brunswick.

On The One's issue, I think you can't just say I want to join and that's it. You need to go to a qualifying round for a particular country. The All Filipino Open was the qualifying for Asian 9-Ball and Asian 9-Ball is the qualifying for WPC. You can notice that Alex Pagulayan is not in, why? He is the current WPC Champion, hence he is automatically in WPC. There is no need to qualify. Alex really wanted to play, but he can't.

Anyway, The One, you don't have to sweat it out in any qualifier, just practice and when WPC comes in, you can go to Taiwan a week earlier to qualify for the remaining slots. Here is the link to that info: (These was for 2004, they will surely have it soon for the 2005 WPC)

Thanks blowfish, I wasn't expecting to be given a spot on the Thai team on the basis of an email!? I simply wnated to know if I would be eligable to represent Thailand given that I was married to a Thai. Of course if I was eligable I would have had to have quilified just like everyone else. Anyway, there are many ways to qualify for the WPC but it seems that in order to play on the SM tour you have to be born in one of the qualifying asian countries. Which doesn't bother me much as there are various tours in the UK and europe that I can play on if I wish - I was just curious about the San Miguel.

I hope they update the link soon, I have been unable to make the qualifiers the last two years because of information being released too late :-(

As far as Hong Kong is concern, you don't need to be born in HK to qualify. You have to be a resident or citizen and go through the qualifier.

I think this also applies in other countries.

Your probably right, unfortunately its almost impossible to obtain Thai citizenship. I could probably get HK citizenship much easier.

THanks for the info

hi blowfish, you're right alex is automatically in 2005 wpc but commentators of the all filipino open said that he can't join SM asian 9 ball because he is considered as canadian by APBU.

If I remember it right.....

Alex Pagulayan has dual-citizenship. Any one in Phils who can second me on that or correct me if I'm wrong.

But then again, I don't know what rules APBU has in regards to Dual Citizenships. :)
