I think it was Orcullo who was a fisherman? I remember Alex telling me in the past.

As for them not having enough money to eat - funny, back when I was playing, I NEVER used to eat before and during tournaments. I just believed that after you eat a full meal you get kinda relaxed...borderline lazy...and I did not want to have that feeling while playing. I wanted to be hungry mentally and literally the whole time until it's over and you've won...lol!!!

Maybe thats why they are so good...the have the hunger to win...literally!!

I am filipino BTW so I say this is in pun....because I know how bad and sad the poverty is over there.

Phoebe, what does Alex like to do recreational wise when he is home? I enjoy Alex's banter with the crowd. He is very well liked by practically everyone, except maybe his opponents. Even they get over the loss.

It has been a while since Alex has been back to Hawaii....if anything he lives totally out of his suitcase. It's hard to find him in one place for long...kinda draining for him at times...but thats a pool players life - well at lest his...lol!

When he does have free time he loved to cook - barbequeing (is that how you spell it?..lol!) especially. Of course he plays poker....but always told me he never "enjoyed" playing the game...like it's not fun for him. He also looooves going to the beach and playing basket ball and running to keep in shape.

He likes live comedy (any comedy act actually) A LOT!! And is also totally is amused by cartoons. Yes, cartoons.

But his number one passion is pool....he said because it will continually/always/forever challenge him mentally.

For a guy who didn't complete 10th grade I give him credit for always wanting to challenge himself mentally - hes always willing to learn anything new. He always said he wish he could finish school....but with his schedule it almost would be impossible since he is in a different country every week - almost.

Sorry...probably more than you asked for...but that's a little personal insight of Alex Pagulayan....which may or may not help others to understand him as a person.

Got a text from Thorsten last night, who is playing in Palawan. He is still in, even though he struggles with his game. Ralf is also still in, but on the loserside. About 3 000 spectators watched that tournament!!! Here, in Cebu, there were about 1 000 spectators, but that was simply because there is not available space for more people.

Thnx again for the updates Roy!

Here's some updates from the "other" tournament:

Mario Tolentino scalped two Taiwanese tonight, Chung Chien-Te (9-4) and Chang Jung-Lin (9-8), who's been dominating the Guinness tour for
the last two years. Thorsten Hohmann lost to a 19 year old, Boots Augusto and like you've mentioned, Ralf Souquet is on the losers' side.

And these two aren't even considered dark horses, go figure...

Here's a pic of Mario Tolentino and the link:

I think it will be aired by Solar Sports on a later date. They're down to 8, and here are the match-ups:

Alex Pagulayan vs. Joven Bustamante
Carlo Biado vs. Gandy Valle
Lee Vann Corteza vs. Dennis Orcullo
Roberto Gomez vs. Michael Feliciano

Roberto Gomez won a thrilling match in the Quarterfinal, 9-8. It was on the tv-table, and it was packed with spectators, and Gomez entertained the people with his faces, laughs, smiles and dancing.

J. Bustamante was up 6-1 against Alex, but when we left Alex had the break at 6-5.

Efren won the rotation against Alcano yesterday. Don't know the score.

That's what I'm talking about! I enjoy hearing about the other side of a pool player. You must be quite a woman yourself. I know you play pool well but it takes a special woman to put up with a pool player. Alex like me, probably talked too much in school. :( Although I am not a professional pool player by any stretch of the imagination, I can speak about the angel of a wife that has put up with me and my pool passion for many years.

Aloha no Phoebe! I hope you took Alex to see crazy Frank DeLima while he was in Hawaii.
Im glad he likes cartoons. I do work on Avatar and American Dragon. As well as the Disney stuff like Lilo & Stitch and Mulan. Just finished the new Scooby Doo as well.
Alex of course is much loved here and wish he would play a lot more in California.

Great thread Roy!!!!!

The "other" tournament's semifinal cast is complete too! Ralf Souquet earned his spot by defeating the reigning Mandaluyong Mayor's cup champion, Antonio Gabica, 9-3, while Marlon Manalo edged Ko Pin Yi, 9 games to 7.

The semifinal match-up will be Wu Chia Ching vs. Ralf Souquet and Marlon Manalo against 18 year old Jericho Banares.

The Puerto Princesa Mayor's Cup will be up for grabs and we've got two 18 year olds to fight for it! Wu Chia Ching and Jericho Banares
both won their hill-hill matches, prevailing over Ralf Souquet and Marlon Manalo respectively, and they will be squaring off for the title.

Wu Chia-Ching is the champion. Wu came back from 4:7.
It will be ignorant if someone still think taiwanese can't play 10-ball......

This cannot be the happiest of times for anyone to be visiting or residing in The Phillipines and sincere condolences go out to any site members who have lost relatives or friends.

What about the Cebu Manny Villar tourney? Isn't that where all the flooding and stuff from the tropical storm is occurring?

Woke up this morning, nice weather, real sunny, not raining like the other days. We decided to go to the mall to see the matches, and then perhaps head for the beach.

We saw that both Pagulayan and Gomez lost their semifinals, and then we didn't want to stay for the final between G. Valle (who won) and Orcullo. We went to the hotel for some sleep instead, long night the night before.

When I wake up 2 hours later, at 5 in the afternoon, it was raining like crazy and the wind was real fast and strong outside. Got the news that 17 people had died in north Cebu because of the bad weather, and that the boat between Manila and Cebu had turned upside-down and more than 700 people died. As far as I know only 4 people survived the trip... Truly a sad day here in Cebu.

Right now there is nice weather here in Cebu again, and we will book our flights for Tuesday I think. All flights were cancelled/delayed Sunday, and only a few will go Monday I believe. I heard there is still really bad weather in Manila, but not sure. Didn't quite understand the newschannel since some of the information is in Tagalog and some in English.
