Phillipino dominance?

Btw, how much value does a US Open crown now have?
Would John Schmidt or Jeremy Jones play Orcollo for the cash?

And during the first night of the recent DCC there was a scheduled 10 or 9 ball ring game. However, when the rest of the players around saw Bustamante and Parica waiting for them, not to mention Orcollo and Reyes near the area, none dared to join it. It would be so funny if it is not too embarassing. Archer and Deuel eventually joined the next day and did well.

9-ball is Efren's weakest game

yes and he scalped the five time world champion in two color of money matches..and this is earls strongest and only game

think about that

not bad eh... 800 000$ for a 52? years old. LOL i think for the past 5 years, efren had the most money from playing pool..

but the sad part is efren still need to claim half of that 800K from IPT.

did you see the picture for the " the year's biggest story " ? it is like dream team of today's pool scene =/

Agree. Can you name any 7 players from ANY country that could rival the team of Reyes, Bustamante, Pagulayan, Orcollo, Manalo, Alcano and Luat? Even if you get the 7 best players of USA and Europe, it still would be very hard to bet against the Filipinos.

Yes, from Taiwan: Yang, Wu, Kang, Kuo, Fu, Chang, Chao...

Definitely a comparable team.

Germany can offer Thorsten Hohmann, Andreas Roschkowski, Thomas Engert, Ralf Souquet, Oliver Ortmann, Michael Schmidt, and Christian Reimering, a team that could give these seven Fillipinos a serious run for their money.

It would be nice if someone can start a 8 man per country tournament format that has 9b, 8b, rotation, 1hole, straight.

Imho, the Team Philippines can win at least 2 or 3 events I mentioned above. The only game that i think Philippines will have problem is on straight game.

and yea, just add jose parica on the philippines team :)

I like the chances of the Taiwan Dream Team of matching up against the Filipinos. I think it's time for somebody to sponsor a regular annual event for these two asian powerhouse to go at each other, more like an asian mosconi cup. I have watched some tournament which almost resembled the mosconi such as the phil invitational and taiwan tea time. though there are prize money involved and since the nature of those tournaments are for mere exhibition, As I saw it, the players were not playing at their best and not much pride involved. I believe by making it an official tourney would greatly affect and increase the players performances in both camps. especially it is not for the money they are fighting for but for supremacy.

And do not forget the recent 2006 WPC in Manila. Not even 1 American was able to get to the final 32 (?) of the tournament in our most dismal performance yet.

Correct. Only two Americans got thru the group stages, and neither won a match in the elimination stages. The round of thirty two was strictly filipino, Taiwanese and European, with a couple of other Asian players. Pretty sad commentary on the state of American pool.

No question we lag behind the filipino and Chinese players. We may be on a par with the best from Europe.

Corey and Johnny seemed to be the only Americans willing to mix it up with the filipinos. Several other American players joined in the Ring games, but dropped out (or got knocked out) fairly quickly.

My thoughts on the various national teams listed above. The filipino team will be the best, with the Taiwanese team a close second. A European or American team will be the underdogs against either of the above.

The money matches in DCC says it all, even the American pros themselves acknowledged the dominance of filipino players today by not playing them in an even match. Let's face it, Filipinos are dominant these days.

Geez, I forgot all about that one. are you referring to the 10-7 handicap match between reyes and deuel? heard orcullo played a handicap match as well. I think it was choose your breaker. was it? by the way, do you guys know any video link where I could find and watch the finals of the world cup of pool in the internet?

just look at the " the year's biggest story "

it will tell you

Thanks for posting that. I know from a business standpoint the BCA convention sucking was the biggest news for retailers. The BCA was embarrassed by the turnout. They experimented by catering to the Chinese importers schedule and it blew up in their faces. They forgot it was the AMERICANS that were selling the products. It was all the talk in every place that sold cues or pool tables.

I don't think there is a Filipino dominace. From what Mr. Reyes said after he wins, "I was just lucky". So it was luck. I take the master's word for it.

An excellent observation dude. I think what we should do now is to take whatever Reyes' lucky charm that he wears away from him. his luck percentage is very high considering he wins his matches more often because of that. Might be that ring that he wears or that cue stick of his. :D

This might be a technicality but on tight pockets and fast cloth, I think the Taiwanese have a *slight* edge.

On "normal" equipment, I think the game is even.

On slow cloth, I like the Filipinos.

And if it's slow cloth with money on the side, the Filipinos can give out the collective 8 ball.

I think they did this already. If I remember it correctly, Wu, Chao and Yang, etc came over to play against Manalo, Orcullo, Corteza and a couple of others I can not remember at this time and team Philippines beat Taiwan pretty handily even without Efren and Bustamante. And Manalo and Orcullo were not even famous players then so it was considered as the Philippine's second rated players against the best from Taiwan.

I'll take the filipinos if they play on the floor. LOL

Actually, you make good points here. Definitely a tougher match if they play on "fast cloth", as the filipinos lose some edge they have with the tight cue ball control they play. But, on heart alone, I still would have to bet on them. They seem to figure out a way to win under any conditions.

I totally agree. The Taiwan players, IMHO, only do well when they are in their own country and sometimes in Asia. Take then out of their comfort zone and they do not do very well compared to the Filipinos who can play in any country and usually do excellent.

Wu and Kuo went to the USA for the IPT and they hardly made a dent. Wu even failed to qualify the first time and when he did, he was hardly noticed. Compare it to Orcollo who qualified his first try in a very strong field. He is the only player together with Reyes who ended up in the top 5 of the 2 IPT tournaments. We certainly noticed Orcollo and Manalo when they first came to the USA but cannot say the same for Kuo and Wu.
