Phoenix Pool Room to close down!

I just wonder if anyone is ever going to open a place and get some Diamond tables in Phoenix? After all, they are leading the way for pool as we speak. Seems like every major city with pool halls (whether they cater to players or not), are moving to Diamond tables. Out with the old..and in with the new...I do realize, however, this could be extremely costly to a room owner. :)

We've all stated and agree that the 9' at Metro Sports Bar used to be very fast. Even so, me and a number of other good players have been able to adjust accordingly. When you're able to adjust, they're kinda neat to play on, because you can do so much with such little effort. Many times it felt like you just willed the ball around the table for perfect shape, rather than having to muscle it.

I understand it took an initial adjustment virtually every time I went there.

Nonetheless, as has been stated it's now a mute point, since they are now using slower felt.

Like you...I don't want to get into pissing matches or flame wars, but frankly the cloth is not enough...those rails are the culprit of the speed and whacky banking on those tables.

A good player can adjust to all conditions...I play in there routinly on Monday nights....(and yes I have cashed)...I will probably be there tonight..... I probably know who you are...And if you are there on Mondays...then you probably know who I am...For reference..I was the one who got second last week.

It is not the point of IF you can adjust or play on those tables...It is a matter of IF you want to subject yourself to those conditions on a regualar basis.

Again...I work 5 seconds from there I could eat lunch there and play FREE pool...I pass becuase I see no need to waist time trying to practice on those tables.

The point you seem to miss is that quite a few good players would love to play there if they were to only fix the tables.

The other point is you think I am somehow bashing them or flaming you, or whatever....The fact is they have a very nice layout for a pool room for both bar box and big table...& they have the best layout for smokers (with the smoke patio)

They could turn that place into a nice place (for everyone) with very little effort.

I'm still in a little bit of shock over this myself. Ron has done so much for pool in Arizona that it really depresses me to think he's calling it quits.

Apparently the reason Ron is not able to continue the Alexanders operation at its locations as I understand it from a reliable source. A while back the owner of the last Asian market located to the East of Alexanders bought the property Alexanders is located in, and they the (new owner) is not allowing Ron to continue to lease the Alexanders Bar operation space.

All you need to is find someone who loves pool with a lot of money. :)

While we wait for Dennis and Jimmy to open a new room together . . .

This really sucks. Even if they didn't play there regularly (or at all), every player in AZ owes a big thank you to Ron and Alexander's for all he's done for the pool community. That place will be missed, big time. I wish Ron and Ann the best. Have a feeling he'll be up to something pool-related down the road . . . sure hope so.

If that is true, it is the same situation we faced at Pool & Brew. The new property owner would not renew the lease. He would have sold us the property at a very inflated price.

Thats really bad news to hear. Ron & Ann did a lot for pool and for everyone that played. Sadly its not uncommon to see this happening across the country. The mom & pop pool rooms are becoming a dying breed. Its very risky business at this point to even consider opening a pool room.

This is sad news, I just started going out to Arizona to play and do some work the last few months. I enjoyed playing the tournaments at Alexanders and want to thank Ron for all he has done for the players and to support pool. Also want to thank Jimmy, Dennis, Bull, and Chuck for making pool happen for the the upper players with the tour. It almost makes it worth driving out to play. See everyone tomorrow out there. Jimmy hopefully by this time tomorrow we will be playing on a recovered Gabriels.

I was out there a few months ago hanging out with Bull and a few other friends and thought it was a great room. How sad:( ! I also met Ron at the Swannee a few years ago and thought he was very nice. If I remember correctly he also sponsored a few of the locals in the tournament as well. Great supporter/promoter for pool. Hopefully a better lease elsewhere or something better will come along.

#*@!@#%^*(%#@##%^*u

This sucks!!!

Big thanks to Ron and Bull for all they have done. I have had a lot of good times there, and it was the first place I thought of if I had a chance to play.

Looks like we have to find someone to buy an Asian market to save Alexanders.

P.S. Hey Cowboy I don't care whats going in there next or why Rons not relocating to surprise. This is VERY depressing to me and some other people that called that place home.

Oh yeah, Metro's rails aren't right.

You all seem to be acting like the world has ended, imho it has not. Another GREAT Pool Room has closed that did a lot to promote Pool in AZ. BUT are still many places to play Pool in the Valley of the Sun. It is not like ever Pool room in the Valley has shut down.

Like I said there is an opportunity for someone to open a clone of Alexanders is the far West Valley where the population is growing, and there is no decent place to play pool.

Kolby is Tempe is a GREAT ROOM with a Owner who is also supporting Pool in the Valley of the Sun.:D

It is not like Pool has not been BANNED in Phoenix by you know who----->>>>>

I have to say that even though I was only there a couple of times in the last year, that Alexanders was one of my favorite places to play in Arizona!

To get some of the state's best (and some times the region/country's) into a 7 table bar-box room to play in 64+ player fields, he had to have been doing something right.

The staff was always courteous, the tournaments were always run as smoothly as could be expected, and the equipment (especially since the appearance of the Diamond Smart Tables) was second to none in the state.

The room will definately be missed!

Your missing it.....there is only ONE Alexander's.

It's been a mecca for players for over 25 years. It's part of Az pool, and CAN'T be replaced.

Who is going to drive to Tempe from the west side just to bang some balls? NOBODY....

It's going to be sorely missed by a bunch of people, including me. And I live in Tucson!!

No Rick I am not missing the point, Alexanders and Ron did a hell of a lot for Pool in the Valley of the Sun. Ron was the ONLY one who ever put on a SEVER and Under $500.00 Add Tournament in the Valley for the Seven and Under Players. I said it earlier in the thread Ron did a lot to promote Pool in the Valley of the Sun, and Arizona.

I live out by Whitman, and drive to Kolby?s way over in Tempe to play some times,
fragged.gif
does that make me CRAZY?

Point is Alexanders is closing, but IMHO the World has not come to the end, and there are other rooms in the Valley/Phoenix metro Area that have also supported Pool. Like those who chipped in so Mike H?s All Around could have a venue.

If my memory serves me correctly they were the Northern Lounge, Phoenix Six Shooter (now closed), Metro, Kolby?s, and Main Street. Did I for get any, if so I am sorry

Yes I still feel the Far WEST VALLEY offer opportunity, and if a Room like a Metro, Alexanders, Kolby?s, or Main Street open their it could be successful if it was RUN, and Promoted Properly. IMHO. BTW there are a lot of Pool players living West of 67th Avenue.

Plus if there was a Big Pool Tournament there with a $1,000.00 Guaranteed Add, I am sure some of those Easy Valley type would make the trek to the West Side.

Yes Alexanders will be missed by many, like the Golden 8 Ball.
