Phoenix Pool Room to close down!

No Rick I am not missing the point, Alexanders and Ron did a hell of a lot for Pool in the Valley of the Sun. Ron was the ONLY one who ever put on a SEVER and Under $500.00 Add Tournament in the Valley for the Seven and Under Players. I said it earlier in the thread Ron did a lot to promote Pool in the Valley of the Sun, and Arizona.

I live out by Whitman, and drive to Kolby?s way over in Tempe to play some times,

does that make me CRAZY?

Point is Alexanders is closing, but IMHO the World has not come to the end, and there are other rooms in the Valley/Phoenix metro Area that have also supported Pool. Like those who chipped in so Mike H?s All Around could have a venue.

If my memory serves me correctly they were the Northern Lounge, Phoenix Six Shooter (now closed), Metro, Kolby?s, and Main Street. Did I for get any, if so I am sorry

Yes I still feel the Far WEST VALLEY offer opportunity, and if a Room like a Metro, Alexanders, Kolby?s, or Main Street open their it could be successful if it was RUN, and Promoted Properly. IMHO. BTW there are a lot of Pool players living West of 67th Avenue.

Plus if there was a Big Pool Tournament there with a $1,000.00 Guaranteed Add, I am sure some of those Easy Valley type would make the trek to the West Side.

Yes Alexanders will be missed by many, like the Golden 8 Ball.
Gilbert needs a good pool room, 860 on Diamonds mmmmm

I've played on the Diamonds, and Valley Bar Boxes, too me there is not a big difference. Would be nice if Room/Bar Owners would Brush the Tables Daily, and Clean the Ball Daily.

Remember years ago after playing a few hour in a Room, the staff would make you stop to brush the tables clean, and than play could resume.

Balls were cleaned between each, and every customer.

There is a significant difference between Valley's and Diamonds....

Where the hell did you play...at a hospital?

I have never been in a poolroom that cleaned the balls after every customer. Or, one that made play stop just to brush the table...

Strange....

You all seem to be acting like the world has ended, imho it has not. Another GREAT Pool Room has closed that did a lot to promote Pool in AZ. BUT are still many places to play Pool in the Valley of the Sun. It is not like ever Pool room in the Valley has shut down.
First of all, you DO NOT get it! Otherwise you wouldnt be so quick to say "It is not like ever (or every) Pool room in the Valley has shut down." I know what other rooms are in the Valley and so does everyone else that is posting on this thread.

Like I said there is an opportunity for someone to open a clone of Alexanders is the far West Valley where the population is growing, and there is no decent place to play pool.
I dont care if someone built the "Taj Ma Pool", inside the new stadium, ITS NOT ALEXANDERS.

Thats what you don't get. Its not the location, its what they made possible that isn't available. Sure someone could open something out in Surprise. But can you gamble their till 6:00 am? Do thy have tournaments that pay $300+ with 14 people in it? No other place in the Valley paid out like Alexanders. No other place has consistent good action like they did. I could go on and on and I still don't think you would get it.

I am very greatful that Kolbys is around and Jimmy has done MANY good things for pool in the Valley. I use play at the Rack and Q back when he had that place.
Unfortunately for me it still bothersome that Alexanders is closing.

Thanks, by you posting a picture of Osama DJing it makes it all better.

Next time you put up a thread of gas prices going up a 1/2 a cent, I will post a picture of Osama saying "Ha Ha".

Or next time you say you can't play in a tournament because you sneezed twice the week before the event, I will say "get over it because the air quality is really good out in Queen Creek".

Back in the 1950's that is what they did clean the Balls after each customer turned them in, and they did brush table when they got dirty.

I use to go to a room in NYC with my uncle, and saw it ever time we went.

Well I get you point, but personally do not gamble on pool, so that is not a problem for me. Plus have never stayed up all night playing pool.

Your new here so we will forgive you....

Alexanders has been around FOREVER... Frankly it was the Nexus of pool in the valley.... (even for many other room owners)

Walking into Alexanders is totally different than walking into any other room in the Valley.

"Cue theme song from Cheers"

The only other room in the valley that was like that was Mike O's Casino Billiards.....and wouldn't you know it...Ron was his right hand man there.

Anyone can drum up money and open a room...and probably find a building much nicer than Alexanders...I don't think anyone would argue that place was OLD...but it had HISTORY.....something many other rooms just don't have.....It is not the room itself...it is the people that made the room.

For YEARS..Rachel Hale running the weekly tournaments...

For YEARS the many ring games, scotch doubles action on table 6 & 7...

All the BCA teams...state champions and national champions...

For YEARS walking in and seeing Tres Cane positioned at his corner spot on the bar waiting patiently for that (soon to be poor) unsuspecting road player to come wandering in looking for action.

All the side bar bets, woofing, stories, etc.

Bull just waiting for someone to get out of line so he could throw them out on to Dunlap before they knew what hit them.

Oh...and how about those $5 tamales from the guy that came in with the cooler on Friday nights.

Not to mention all the added money tournaments that were the best run in the state.

We can only hope that Ron has the desire and means to open a room somewhere else on the west side....If he does...I predict it to be the new Nexus of Arizona pool....:)

EDIT: BTW.... Alexanders was technically a Bar yes...but it was actually thought of more as a "pool room"....even the patrons from the Bar next door said..."They play pool in there".

I heard about Casino Billiards on Bell was it not on Bell road and about 35th. AVE.

Heard those stories also, and the pool players can hope as you said "Ron has the desire and means to open a room somewhere else on the west side."

I hope maybe Peoria, or Surprise would be considered, as there is nothing there now.

Yes Rick there are significant differences in Diamonds, Dynamos, and Valleys. But what is more important in any room is that ALL THE TABLES, be they Diamonds, Dynamos, or Valleys all play alike.

Dave Clayton is the Table Mechanic for man of the room/bars in AZ, and normally when he does a group of table they all play very close to one another.

Diamonds do not play like Valleys or Dynamos.

In fact I would not even consider a Diamond 7' a bar box.

I think however....you may need to be rated higher than a 7 rated player to be able to notice the differences...;)

Yeah well...your only a 7 on paper.

Whats the differences?
I am higher than a 7 and have played on both. I know what I find different between the two and am just looking for your opionion.

Sorry Alexanders closed. All good things come to an end but it doesnt make it easy. One guys crapper is anothers Taj Mahal.

We are getting a new room near me with Diamonds so I hope it becomes
a great place to go.

Have you ever played on a Valley with Simonis cloth and Aramith Pro balls? I haven't. My experience with Valley tables is all on cheap cloth's. Worse, they use that weighted cue ball. Even the special Aramith cue ball is not perfect.

Diamond Pro/Am and Smart tables give the best experience to any level player. If you want a challenge, find some of the Diamond tables with the "pro" cut pockets and deep slates. They are smaller versions of the 4.5 x 9 tables not bar boxes. Check out the leveling system. Then look at a Valley. Case closed!!!
