You take your HDD out of your old computer, and hook it up to this "enclosure". The enclosure then makes your internal HDD act like an external HDD because you can hook up the enclosure to the new PC via USB and transfer all the files off of it. I use it a lot to recover files. They have ones for laptops even (laptops have smaller HDDs)

2). Get on your old computer and sign on to your e-mail and send yourself an e-mail with all of the files you want as attachments. (I'm not sure what limits there are but it's a lot more than a floppy....you might need several e-mails)
3) Get on your new computer and sign onto your e-mail and download all the files you just sent yourself (from the INBOX).

Zip the files
If it's an old computer you may have a "zip file" program. It will compress all your pictures into the file, and the you can send it to yourself via email to open in the new computer.

JAM does your pc have a cd/dvd burner?
you could probably fit all of your photo's onto just one dvd, or a couple of cd's depending on the size of your collection.

At any rate, I initiate this thread for those who may not be acquainted with the Photo button up at the top, as well as its magnificant SEARCH feature. I've got only 120-some pictures loaded up there, but I aim to download quite a few more, when time allows.
So, if you're interested in seeing what Hillbilly looks like or Dee Adkins when their name is mentioned in a thread, take a stroll on up to the Photo button of this forum and do a search. I hope to have quite a menagerie of players' pics up there when I'm finished moving my pics, two at a time, from my old computer to my new computer!

There is a cable that connects to both USB ports on each computer. One company that makes it is called the Detto Intellimover. You load the software on both computers and it lets you use the other computer as an external hard drive and you will see it on the other desktop which allows you to simply drag and drop or copy any files you want to the new computer.
I just got a new laptop with Vista, and my old cord won't work between XP and Vista...so I have to go get another newer one that is compliant with Vista.
Anyway, you always have so many marvelous pictures, i will need to peruse them when I have the time. Thanks again.

Making the transition from XP to Vista is a big step for sure, Linda. I haven't done it yet. There was a really good thread in the NPR section about Vista compatibility issues, which you may enjoy reading. Lots of smart computer members on this forum contributed to it with some very cool tips. I think SmorgassBored initiated the thread, so you can look for his name and Windows XP in the Search function.
Thanks to all for the great ideas for moving my picture files. It sure does beat using the 3.5 floppy!

Hi Jam,
if you are not anxious of moving a screwdriver, you can temporarily put the old hdd into the new computer. If the cables match, remove the cable from the new CD-Rom and plug the old hd into this position. Then have a look at the jumpers for Master/Slave on the CD-Rom, and put the jumper on the HDD into the same position.
After this, you should find a new drive when you boot the new pc. Now copying the files is quite fast
Since you are a professional journalist, I guess that you own a card-reader for your camera and several cards, either CF or SD. This is a very good alternative as well: Plug the card-reader into the old PC, copy some hundred pictures onto the card, and plug it into the new PC. Since SD-cards with 2GB of storage are below 20USD, this should be a fast and convenient way, probably even more convenient than moving the HDD
