I will be at a conference at the Hyatt Regency on 151 Wacker 4/9-4/13. Can you suggest a place to play?

Depends on what you're looking for.

There are some very nice places to play, some others that are better for action, or tournaments.

Whatcha lookin' for?

I have only been playing for a few months so I would not be looking for "action" nor to play in tournaments. I would like to practice & it would be nice to watch some highly competent players. I live in a town of 3000 people with drunks at bar tables & 9' tables when I go to a recreation center in Florence, KY full of silly teenagers & bad music.

I have a playing cue composed of a Player butt & a Universal shaft, which is quite satisfactory. I would also like to go some place where I could try various break cues eg. Sledgehammer, x-breaker, Predator, etc without having to buy them on-line. This could be a pool hall or billard supply store.

One place that immediately come to mind, and there may be others:

Pro-Tyme in Orland Park:
http://www.protymebilliards.com/
15605 S 94th Avenue
Orland Park, Illinois 60462
(708) 403-0600

Might be your best bet as they have a good mix of players there, and cues too, with an excellent pro shop.

Even though they are about half an hour from the Loop, it'll probably be well worth your while. Call them first to ask about trying out the cues you mention, as it's possible they'll not have those specific ones in stock.

Protyme is a great place .about the nicest hall you will find anywhere.you will like it for sure.as far as history while your in town visit Chris's on Milwaukee av..some shots in the movie "Color of Money".some very good players in the main room.

Dear Berlowmj,

I remember you wanting to buy my sledgehammer once...glad to see that you are still going on try and see what suits you best. Personally, I really like the x-breaker, though I'm sure there's no poolroom in Chicago that has one for you to try. In fact, I'm not even sure if Pro-Tyme carries Sledgehammers or BK2s.

To watch some good players play, I highly recommend Red Shoes in Alsip, about only a 25 minute drive from downtown. If you go there on a weekday day night (my fav is monday night), stay late and I'm very sure you will see some good players and some nice action. The Johns at Red Shoes also carry an assortment of cues that you can try out.

Have fun in the windy city!

Wow, April is a long way off!

I agree with Pro-Tyme completely if you can get a car or someone that can give you a lift. Great place.

If you don't have access to a car, there are a couple nice places like G-Cue and City Pool Hall that are five minutes via cab from where your staying, but they wouldn't have any real selection of cues to try out and the players are mostly leaguers. City Pool Hall still allows smoking if that's a plus or minus. I'm not sure if G-Cue allows it or not. Chris's is non smoking. G-Cue and City Pool Hall are not what I would call spectator type places as much as Chris's and Pro-Tyme can be.

Try to get a car if you can and you will certainly be able to see the best of all worlds. Pro-Tyme sounds like it has everything you are looking for and it is a first rate place.

Have fun!

the big problem with protyme is that it is so nice you don't want to leave.:)

First you have to find a place to park. Good luck, you can use the garage, if you have a spare 35$ burning a hole in your pocket.

Lakeview Billiards and Corner Pocket are closed.

Tony's on Leland? Would you really recommend this place to someone not familiar with the area?

Marie's only has 8' tables. Kind of an old school place, not bad, but hardly on the top of anyones must play list.

With all due respect, how many of these places that you are recommending have you actually been to and why would you recommend them?

I will be visiting family in Chicago in late Jan, and thought I would jump in here to find a place to play while I'm there. From what I understand, Chicago is a good place for 1-pocket, and I would like to find a place where I can play some for $20-50 a game. I'm not looking for big action, just a friendly game. I would prefer if I could find somewhere close to where I will be staying, which is the Lake Forest area. Maybe I could meet up with some of you fine Az'ers while I'm there.

That's an easy one, Chris's Billiards on Milwaukee Ave. It's about a half hour south from Lake Forest during non rush hours. For One Pocket, that's the absolute surest bet. If you haven't been there before, you can't not like the place. Old school at it's best.

There isn't really anything closer to Lake Forest as far as regular pool halls go that I can think of, let alone places to look for a One Pocket game. I'm nothing of a One Pocket player compared to these guys, but let me know when you're in town. I'd love to say hello and see a good game!

He's staying a long ways away from Red Shoes, but I agree, it's a great place for 1P.
