I know, you're probably thinking "Geez, he's just NOW playing 1-pocket?". But truth of the matter is, most everyone in the crowd I run with or in the halls/bars I play out of (except one) either wanna shoot 9-ball or 8-ball. I've watched a lot of 1-pocket and was eager to play so....... this past Wednesday night our 8-ball team had a bye so I went up to practice anyway. While shooting balls into the holes on a practice table, I had an older gentleman come up and ask me if I wanted some competition, and I say yes. He asked me what I wanted to play and I told him that I had never played 1-pocket but I wanted to learn how since it is the game of choice anymore in most legitimate poolhalls. Now this gentleman knew a thing or two about 1-hole and was kind enough to give pointers throughout the 4 or 5 games we played. I lost all the games but was one ball from victory in two of them. The important thing was that I got my feet wet and recieved much good advice concerning tactics and shot selection. I played better than I expected and most of my mistakes were due to excessive speed on some shots, which I attributed to being "wired" for rotation and 8-ball games. I'm gonna start playing this game more. It's definitely a "cold drink of water" from playing the same 'ol games all the time. The beautiful thing about the night was that somebody took the time to show a "newbie" things instead of just "cleaning his clock". That went a long way into making for an enjoyable evening and a learning experience all rolled into one!!!

1-pocket, yeahhh !!!

Watch out, it can become extremely addicting. I've got 4 players in my pool hall playing it now.

I just got into it as well. I am still getting the rules down now as far as spotting balls in certain situations.

Onepocket is a great game! It is perhaps the most strategic and creative of all of the pool games. Shoot straight, bank well, and manage the table and your opponent well.

Also, I've learned that one must really strive to accomplish many objectives with a single shot in order to perform well at this game. For instance, if you are able to play safety while positioning balls toward your hole, then it's a good shot. Just putting balls out of play just to keep your opponent from shooting does not win games.

Great to hear we may have a new convert.

1 pocket

You will certainly learn to incorporate a lot of these shots in your existing game skills in 8 and 9 ball.

I have read the rules thoroughly on onepocket.org but I cant seem to grasp a foul on a stroke after balls have been legally pocketed in a previous stroke in the same inning.

Say for instance, I pocket three balls into my pocket and then on the next stroke I fail to contact an OB therefore having a foul. Do these balls stay down and my turn is over. Or do those three balls get spotted, no point subtraction and next players turn?

Reason I ask is because I could not find that in the onepocket.org rules and I was messing around with 1p in virtual pool 3 and the balls got spotted without subtraction of point.

only 1 of the 3 gets spotted. 1 foul = 1 ball (not including any balls sunk on a foul shot, those would come up as well).

Just remember - a foul is when this is not achieved........

after striking the cueball, after it contacts at least 1 ball (ANY BALL or BALLS), SOMETHING (anything) must hit a rail.

So anytime you wonder if something was a good hit, just refer to the above statement and ask yourself, DID THAT HAPPEN?

also remember that any balls that are pocketed in a shot, where the cueball ends up scratching in that inning, then all those balls spot up and the person that scratched, owes 1 ball on top of that.

Onepocket is a beautiful game. You got the beauty of 9 ball (having to shoot a specific ball, and sometimes navigate over the entire table, to get shape on a specific ball) and the beauty of Bank Pool (being able to bank a ball from anywhere on the table) and the beauty of Straight Pool (being able to navigate in close quarters around a stack of balls and picking them off) and the beauty of 3 cushion (caroming off one ball and going rail/rails to put your cueball in a certain spot, or shooting the cueball into rail/rails and making contact with another ball)... You get all these games, all rolled into 1 game.

Great shooters can do well at the game, and at the same time, not so good shooters can do well at the game.

Enjoy it!

Welcome to a new and better world :D

One Pocket is THE best game, by far. I just love it.

I started playing it in 2007, but no one else in my area plays it, so I only get to play it once in a while. Got to play it again last weekend, the first time since Derby City Classic 2010...

Can't wait for May and the US Open One Pocket Championship! :D

Are you sure about that? I dont think it's "the entire inning"... it's only balls that were pocketed on the shot that scratched. Lets say you play a shot to make one in your hole, while sending the CB to knock in the one in your opponent's hole, then the CB follows it in. The ball made in YOUR hole comes out, the ball made in your OPPONENT's hole comes out, and you OWE 1 ball for the foul.

I've never seen anyone spot all balls made in an inning on a scratch (or any other foul).

This is my understanding of the rules as well, all ball on a SHOT must be spotted + the owed ball.

You played it one time and you loved it. There is something sick about that.:D

It's the Ultimate Pool Game .. there is a guy who sells a shirt sayin' so

I'm not a good player but I don't think I really learned about pool until I learned to play one pocket and by playing it, it made my 9/10 ball safely play much better and better understanding of how and where the whitey will travel for positions.

Sorry... bad choice of words when I was in a hurry.... I edited it back to indicate a "shot".

Certainly there would be blood a flying, if you ran 7 balls and scratched and the dude tried to make you spot all those hard earned balls of your's back up:D

One pocket compliments all other games. Strategy, defense, banks, speed, patience, caroms, herding, nursing. Most important aspect is taking care of whitey. Many games are lost from mistakes. Scratching is usually a two ball swing, plus the balls your opp may make. Take care of whitey!

Hot dog! We got us another convert and it's about damn time, that's for true.
Well done, Maniac.
Although worn to a frazzle, I myself just got home after six hours of it and I'll probably be back Tuesday for more.
