Playing 9b, Giving the 8, where do you rack it?

Lost 2 of 4 league games on opponent's break. I put the 8 in two different places. Went in a corner, went in a side.

Bad location or bad luck or both or something else?

Where do you put the extra money ball or balls?

Searched AZ -didn't find a discussion.

Would like to hear from the knowledgeable rackers out there....

ps: the front 3 would get tight/back of rack-not.
 
place it behind the 1 ball, on the side they prefer to break. it will trend towards cross side but it should be very rare. the next best location is the other side behind the 1 ball and then at the back of the rack.

I always put it behind the one. A knowledgeable player will call cross side, but if he makes it there a couple of times, just switch which side of the rack it's on. One side will go easier than the other depending on the rack and table conditions as the time.

That said, I once played a guy that called the bottom corner everytime. Made the money ball 6 times in a row in that same pocket, and I put his money ball in a different spot each time! Some times you can't outplay the luck.:confused:
 
Based on my experience playing in ring games where there are money balls other than the 9 ball, we've always racked the other money balls directly behind the one ball, or the second row in a 9 ball rack. Not to say that those balls didn't go sometimes, but I've always been taught that the two balls behind the one are the ones that generally don't go.

Say you're giving up the 8. What happens in the following scenarios

1. You have first shot after the break, and the 8 is hanging in the pocket. You call 'push', and pocket the 8 ball.

2. Middle of the game, and the 8 ball is hanging in the pocket. You can't see the lowest ball, but you can see the 8. What happens if you intentionally foul and pocket the 8?

Gets spotted both times. If you legally make the 8, on other than a push shot, it stays down. If you illegally make it, it spots. If he makes it illegally, it stays down. Basically you can't take away the spot with an illegal shot, but he can lose his spot with an illegal shot by himself.

Good guess! Yep, had him stuck with a large spot until he pulled that one off on me! It was like the twilight zone!

Funny thing is, when I moved the money ball in the rack, and he called the same pocket, I laughed to myself until it went there again. Then, when I moved it again, and he still called the same pocket, I thought he was an idiot! Guess I still am the idiot, because to this day I still don't know if he actually "won the lottery" there, or actually knew something that I still don't know. If he knew something, he is the idiot because he could have gotten rich off that break.

It sounds like you are spotting someone the free 8ball, if so put it behind the 1ball and pay attenion to the 8balls path, if it keeps getting too close to the opposite side pocket or goes in there to much, then switch it to the other side and see what happens there, then you will know where to continue to place the 8ball.

If you are giving the called 8ball , i like to spot it at the very end of the rack and let them figure out what corner it mite go in, but if that becomes a problem go back to behind the 1ball!
 
I had almost the same question.......Where do you spot the money balls in 9ball if you're giving up the wild 5,6,7, and8?

One way would be to put the 5 & 6 behind the 1, 7 & 8 behind the wing balls, or any combination of that.

Right. I've always been taught that the second row is the best place, and the fourth row is the next best place. The very bottom is weaker and the wing balls are, of course, right out.

LOL......... That's too funny. Sorry, not funny for you....... but Billy was my first experience in giving up weight gambling and the 14 hour match that inspired Harpo and Rudy to give me my alias! Needless to say... they don't call him 'Bronco" for nothing!! :wink: Take care.

i agree with everything but the premise of the fourth row. i always thought they were wired in the corner of the side you break on. but truly no ball is safe if they break decent......
 
It is a league rule here to rack both the 7 and 8 behind the 1. Doesn't matter if you are getting/giving weight or playing even.
