Playing while you are tired

Yesterday I started in a tournament at 1pm. I fought all the way back through the losers bracket to make it to the finals. The finals started around 3am because it was a big tournament and the bar owner wanted to get it done in one day. By this time I was so exhausted and tired I could not even concentrate.

I know a lot of you guys would say to just drink some caffine, but what do you do when caffine stops working? Trust me, I drank a s**t load of it all day.

I would love any suggestions as far as things that help you get through the fatigue so that you can bare down and win. Thanks.

Well stamina is a big part of tourney play... I always wash my face and hands...ect. Ive been in your situation znd it isnt easy at all

This helps alot. Sometimes caffine and sugar throughout the day can give you a harder crash later in the tourney. If you get in this situation again maybe try to hold off on caffine and sugar until you start getting tired.

before drug testing, airline pilots would snort coke to stay alert and happy during long flights. now they are falling asleep in the cockpit in record numbers. thanks FAA!

lots of pool players too take illegal drugs to get them through a tourney. i was watching one match and this unnamed top pro took a bathroom break twice in short order. he came in second to archer. i snapped some pics afterwards and IMHO, he looked buzzed. i don't know for certain though. i do know however that coke and speed are common in pool halls.

If you play/practice for extended periods of time, your body will adjust. Sometimes you'll catch a second, third even fourth wind to continue.

Ive played the same guy for 11 hours straight before, usually the guy that has the best stamina towards the ends comes out on top.... or the guy who hasnt been drinking all day.

It's a Shame

It is a shame that some players practice this type of Life style. Many of these type of players are the reason why pool has had a poor reputation over the years.
Some of this that follows. I have stated on the League Post: I enjoy League play 100%. For me it is the best that pool can offer. Most of the players in the League (BCA) here in the Dallas/Ft Worth area are professional working players & are A to A+
players and approach pool as a hobby and also take pride in it. Attitudes are 90% on the good side. One can find high levels of pressure in the Leagues b/c you are no longer playing for your self like in a tournament but are playing for your Teammates. League play takes appox 3hrs, which is good enough for me as I am taking on the years in my Life. The money issue is not a #1 issue for me although I do like getting my share of pay back money at the end of the season. What is most important to me is Respect of other players not only as a player but also as a person. I find that tournament play takes 15 or more hours and then come back the next day and do it again. I also find that tournament play is more cut throat.
So, if you are a tournament player. I say that is great for you and I am happy for you as long as you do it the right way. For those players who do abuse the law to get by and win a buck to buy their next meal. They are the low of the low.
One more point. I do not believe that a energy drink or washing your face can help you get by during a tournament unless you are a young man. As for an older player. The only thing that can help is to exercise, eat properly and be in the best shape that a 50+ in age person can be. There is hope but it has a to be worked on to play & sit around all those hours during a tournament.

A protein drink will give you a boost without the crash & jitters of caffeine & sugar.

You had no choice to play if the tournament had to be played out. Or you could have chopped the prize pool with the other player if nobody objected.

Most people can play when their tired as long as they can keep focased on every shot. If the game is important enough for you (gambling or good size tournament) you'll stay focased and tired won't be much of a factor. Johnnyt

I just started hittin balls after long layoff and I find I get tired too. I tried one of those 5hr energy drinks...the lil orange bottle you can get almost every gas station. Now, Im no Dr but that stuff carries me through what I feel is fatigue due to lack of exercise, being fat and old or just being tired.

Give it a shot is all I can say...

I like to stay out of the venue as much as possible. I get really tired if I have to sit for long periods of time and wait for my next match.

I much prefer going to a close restaurant and eat.

straightman: drugs are drugs. there's no difference between sucking a cig or snorthing coke. somehow, inexplicably, our leaders have convinced the people otherwise.

Be prepared.............

Hi there,
I have 2 different games. One when I'm feeling good and one when I'm tired. Being prepared is huge.

Get a good nights sleep the night before the tournament. If you have to drive more than an hour to get there go the night before and make sure you still get the sleep.

Eat small meals the day before your tourny. But eat about 6 times. This will turn on your bodys natural ability to do what it does best. Keep your energy even and consistent. Eat the same way the day of the tournament. Don't forget to eat. Your body needs a steady flow of nutrition.

If there is smoke in the place you are playing get out of there when you aren't playing. Let everyone else become braindead from the lack of oxygen their lungs get.

Rest inbetween your matches. Go to the car or go to your room and lay down. Your body will respond great from this rest. When you play a match your body is on high burn. You burn up alot of energy in that 30 to 60 minute match. During the match you are at high energy. After it is over you need to come down from your high burn mode. This is difficult sometimes. If you don't come down and stay on high burn you will run out of energy.

Bring your own good food in a cooler. Most of the food you get at places where there are tournaments is junk and has very little nutrition. Good food is good energy, bad food robs you of your ability for your body to create energy.

No energy drinks or caffiene. This will do nothing except make you nervous and jittery. If it seems to help you are being fooled because your body will be on high burn and drain every ounce you have left real fast. Now if you eat some food it will still be on high burn and burn your energy up too fast on your tired again.

If you are tired and you have done everything above then you have to turn on the total concentration. Keep your focus on the table all the time. Don't talk to anyone between shots or after games. Your focus and concentration is what will get you through this tired time. Make sure you don't get hungry. Don't eat too much but don't let the stomach get empty.

Now it is more important than ever to take it one shot at a time and make sure where the cue ball is going and make sure your are aiming double hard. When you get tired it is real easy to give up on a shot or get lazy and not figure out the best patern to run out the rack.

This thread caught my eye because I am preparing right now for the US Open. I drove to Virginia beach to prepare but the pool halls there have smoking and that would be very unhealthy especially if your trying to build your body up. I drove to Maryland to play and prepare because it is a non-smoking state. Is that sweet. And it doesn't matter if your playing in the US Open or the local tournament. You need to prepare the same way or you can't expect to do your best.

There are other things you can do but I think you get the idea. Even if the tourny doesn't last until 3:00 AM you will be sure to have energy until it is done.

Try these things at your next tourny and you'll see how much it will help.

I heard players talking and they would say things like I don't see why he wins so many tournaments. HE DOESN'T SEEM TO PLAY THAT MUCH BETTER THAN ALOT OF THESE GUYS.

Now you know.........................

Good Luck in your next one......... Geno............

"energy drinks"

"Energy drinks" should be approached with caution, since many of them contain caffeine, ephedrin, & other forms of "speed" which set you up for a major crash.

Brewers yeast, whey protein powder etc mixed with milk or orange juice will do the job, without the crash. Numerous small, low glycemic meals & snacks will also maintain your energy & avoid the crash.

Nuts, fruit, protein bars... can be stored in your pocket or cue case.

i agree washing face and hands is good and eye drops help to.

OldHasBeen, the road player from St. Louis also had a sure fire way to revive himself for at least a couple of hours. He swore that it worked every time. What he said he would do is the would go into the bathroom and find the cleanest toilet, preferably one of those high volume Kohler toilets and he would lock the door and takes off his shoes and socks, place his feet inside of the toilet (I assume separately) and flush the toilet a few times, letting the cold water refresh his feet.

While its a little far out there, I can only imagine that it works. Since I have started wearing these Birkenstocks my feet don't fatigue much any more so I haven't had the occasion to try it but don't think it hasn't crossed my mind a time or two. Those times, I settled on cooling the head, neck and washing the hands a couple of times. The foot cooling massage is still on the back burner.

If any of you have the balls to go that route, let me know how it works out for you. I would probably go in the ladies bathroom to give it a try if I decide to try it out.

I knew you would start giving up the secrets, Gene. Glad to see your posting some of the things that you do to stay at the top of your game.

Gene continues to honor the contract that he signed for JoeyA at Galveston.
Thanks Gene!

stamina

People here posted some good AND bad tips on how to keep your stamina during the tournament. But you should be aware of the fact that all those tips are dealing with certain amount of stamina you got. But there is much wiser thing you can do: build your stamina up. Someone already mentioned this - working on your fitness can do wonders to your game especially later in the tournament. Running, jogging, basically any cardio exercise can do, you also need to strengten your legs, stomach muscles and back muscles. Try this for two months 3 times a week 45 mins a day and you will see wonders. Fatigue during tournament wont bother you anymore, I promise! :)

Thanks Gene. I have had the opportunity of seeing you play in Arizona. You have a wonderful game and I wish you would post on threads other than perfect aim threads more often. I will try some of your suggestions next time I am in that situation.

One thing about me is I am not like your average pool player. I would consider myself in excellent health. The weekend before this I did a triathlon. I was just playing great all day and all of a sudden I hit a wall and I just couldn't seem to concentrate any more. It just seems to amaze me the mental stamina that some players have that can stay mentally checked in for 15+ hours. I was just wondering if there are any other tricks that are out there to help you do this (other than drugs). Thanks for all the responses.

JoeyA, I love your response, but I guess I just don't want to win that badly. The whole feet in the toilet thing is freakin' hilarious. If I end up not having a job and I need to win to eat I might pull this one out, but until then I will keep my feet in my shoes and socks.
