my cues are family
Family - very well defined.
Glad to know that each are cherished.

Hoping to see more details of the cues when time permits.
The list of course would be extensive so I will be glad to see what you can get.

Hope your recovery is coming along better than expected or predicted.

thanks for such a nice post, sadly i'm not well-i'm not gonna die but I have some chronic pain problem that is keeping me down-bad.

Back to cues...Week after next i'm going to start having my desktop photographer start shooting the cues, I had a meeting with him 2 days ago and he is getting the studio set up, i gave him a junk cue to get the set up right. I own the studio so it makes it easy. What I'm gonna do is take the SW's there first since I have just a few of them and were gonna practice shooting them to get the cameras, lenses and lighting just right, were gonna set up some macro cameras for super close up photography to see just how good this Barry guy is ;). Seriously Barrys work is amazing and he is a good sport when I talk trash.

What I think would be cool is to take some super close up shots on some of the real old cues like dry rotted bumpers, dirty shafts, wraps made with Penn and Cortland etc. Just to share the srtails of the cues, its not about how much ivory you have in your cue, this is about showing the detail work-I'm not going to criticize any cue maker because the points arnt perfect or something dumb. I'm going to show people the details of the finest cues in the world I can get my hands on. And showing the wear is cool too as it tells a story.

How i'm going to stage this is by cue maker, i'm gonna do them one at a time and make CD's of each cue maker, i might do group shots, maybe. I think a CD of each cue maker is the best way to do it and then one for some misc cues, One will be the players I have used over the past 25 years. I have all but 2 that I used for 2 years.

When I have CD's then I'll make sure others get them, I dont know how long this is gonna take, or cost but it shouldnt be to painful. It will be 100% the best photo shoot of important cues I have ever seen, perhaps I'm not the first to da this, I sure as hell dont have the biggest collection, etc. But it aint about that its about showing the detail of what I have, there will be one Gus 8pt, now I do know who he is-there was never a doubt about Mr.Szamboti, but Barry??? who's that? ;)

That is a great idea and although I only have a way more humble camera setup and only one cue (damn, I feel ashamed:o ), I love catching the details even on cues that are a thousand times inferior to yours - but it still is awesome to see 'what's inside'.

I hope, just like many said before, that you'll recovery is as fast as possible! I have also sent a PM to you, nothing urgent or anything, just if you have the time to read it please do so.

Cannot wait

Eric, I cannot wait to see the details of the pics...actually I cannot wait to actually play with one of Barry's cues. Hopefully some more people will post pics...there are a few hundred more Barry's out there...I sincerely thank all of the participants in this thread for sharing your treasures. I hope you take them out and play with them soon!

i took a little morphine and played 45 minutes the other night, i played terible it has been so long,

all you have to do to play with a Barry(what ever that is?) ;) , or a Gus(we all know who he is-the grandmaster) is come to Vegas, if your lucky I might have a Bushka and a Tad or to you can hit balls with. Actually this offer is for damn near anyone, no drunks, druggies or thievs allowed. I 'm not a show off, let me tell a short story about me and then a shorted one about a 8pt Gus that was loaded x5 perhaps the biggest 8pt he ever made.

I grew up in a almost poor home, my parents worked their asses off and did just ok, we never missed dinner but had old junky cars, 800sqft house that was falling apart etc. But they taught me well-i loved them more than anyone ever I am a only child, I took what I learned and made some $$$ not to show off but so I didnt have to live like that, I hated not having a air conditioner and using ice packs in the summer nights or a space heater in the winter. I didnt want to make $$ to be a snob, elitest. $$$ dosent make a person superior to others or better some how. So I set out from a young age to figure out how to make a good living and what I would do with what I made.

Along the way I was 19 and finding out all sorts of things in the world I met people, one guy was Barry Benttencourt(SP?) who owed a pool room, I was proud to show him my McDermott D-26 that my dad bought me, it was alot for my dad and I appericated it-and still do. Barry aske me if I ever heard of Gus, I said "No, who is he". Barry Benntoncourt told me everything about Gus, they were friends. He took out the cue and said here play with it, I was a C player at the time. Barry Benncourt knew that I could hold a cue and just asked that I be careful with it and not ding it, I said that I would be very careful with it, he walked away, I played with it for 30-45 minutes with it maybe an hour. Never once did he come up and bother me, He just let me do my thing with it, I told him I wouldnt move balls with the shaft so I wouldnt ding it etc. He trusted me.

When Barry B. came back he had a big smile on his face, and asked what do you think? I was at a loss for words, at that point in my pool career(for lack of a better word) I had played with alot of different cues mostly mass production stuff, Joss East, McD, Muecci, Mali, there werent as many custom cue makers in 1985 like there is now. I was amazed, wow I played so much better, I said I want to buy one, he said do you know what they cost-I had no clue. I didnt care I just had to have one. He told me a plain one was around $1000-$1500 unless Gus built you one, he continued to educate me that I had no shot of that. I had no shot of spending that much on a cue. I aquired my first Gus a little over a year ago-22 years later. I had other chances but just couldnt pull the trigger. there is magic in Barry and Gus's cues. Even as a C player I could tell the difference. The difference has nothing to to with the price of the cue its the love that goes into the workmanship of the cue, I cant pit my finger on it what it is but WOW you can feel it when you hit a ball, like a home cooked meal with love v. out of the box.

The point of my story, its not a who has the most, best, rarest Szam its about sharing them, I remember that night he let my use that cue with out question 23 years later. He has since passed on, I met him that night. Thats whats its all about in life. People mistake me sometimes and thats cool but I like to share not show off, 90% of the time the other 10% sure its fun to show off a bit. But the real pleasure in life is to give people memories they wont forget.

I am by no means as successful as Fatboy and I can only hope and push really hard to be sometimes, but here's my short story.
I am only 18 now and I am in a quite similar situation to what Fatboy has been in. My parents divorced 8 years ago and yet they still talk sometimes and I can see my father... But my brother, my mum and I live in worse conditions than in what we could / should be.
My father has got money, goes abroad on holiday at least 3 times a year, to HongKong, Australia, France, etc. but my mom is a kindergarten teacher and her wage is really low in this country. My father gives us the same amount of money as child care / maintanance as he did in 2000 when the court sentenced him the amount... and since then of course everything got way more expensive but we still get the same money...
Long story short I had / have to do something just like Eric (if I may call him that way) because in case I didn't it would be much worse for the three of us.

I am buying and selling cues and cases, using my knowledge - which I acquired here and by reading as many books as I could - due to which I became the most knowledged person in pool equipment in my country and that is for sure. We only have 1 forum and there I give advices, talk about my experiences and what I have read and learnt. I try to help everyone even if that's his first time on the forum and due to this I made a lot of true friends. That might sound strange but I was 7 when I first played pool and I purchased my first cue 4 years ago or so and since then I have tried as many as possible and read everything I could so I really know a lot about cues - nearly not as much as you do here, but in my country pool and especially the equipment of it is unknown for most of the players. I know only a few players who really know who Bushka was (or have a guess at least) and only two who know others like Szamboti and Gina. My personal aim is to let everyone know these master craftsman and also, to introduce the Hungarian players to the history of the sport, the era of Herman Rambow, Willie Mosconi, Hoppe, Irving Crane and all the other great players and cuemakers.

Today (in Hungary) everyone turns or headed towards me if they need anything, I know almost everyone who's worth it and who don't, and like I said everyone comes to me or at least 95% of them. Hence I got to meet Jack Justis because it is me who's ordering a case for a local player, I do all the communication, etc. - I'll ask for the buyers permission and post the case here if I can as it is done.
Nowadays I can help my mum a lot, I'll finance the car's maintanance in the summer - our car is a 13 years old Opel Corsa and it needs more care then before... I have to get it's body done.

A few months ago I was to buy a Tad plain jane here on AZ, I did not contact anyone because I was not sure if I should do so or not... I decided right and did not buy one - the car and my family needs the dough more.

However it is my aim to get one soon when I have enough money to spare and I would like to get it from here, that is a dream of mine.

And one day I hope I'll get my first Szam or meet Eric who'll let me play a little with his. Until then all I can do is to browse this forum and a few other sites and dream of owning one of these masterpieces.

Thank you for your time, I just had to write it out off my mind...

A few cues here no one will have seen before.

The middle cue is a Gus but why not have a pic with Father and sons's cues.

Si,

Great looking cues. As said many times, you have a great collection. Just think, know can ever say that they own a Szamboti with one of the most distinctive leather wrap ever seen.
Hope all is well with you.

Tom

Si
I didn't realize the level of withdrawal I was suffering until I saw that Barry again:D

Thank you both very much.

Those cues look amazing also - I like the second from the top most. ...and what a wrap!
