Pocket Chalker - I Can't Use All My Chalk!

I'd really like to get a pocket chalker, but every one I've seen has a holder that surrounds nearly the entire exterior of the cube. I don't "grind" my chalk onto my tip, I swipe it across. So, if I use a "normal" pocket chalker, I can only use about 1/8 of the cube...and I like to use the WHOLE cube (or darn near close to it if I can)!

Does anyone know of a pocket chalker that has a way to hold the cube of chalk so that I can use more of the chalk???

Jason

Could cut off the rubber holder to only come up to 1/4 to 1/2 of the chalk and stick a piece of 2 sided tape in the bottom to make it more secure, that should let you use most of the cube i guess.

I just keep the chalk in my pocket...lol

When my chalk wears down I just remove it and put some nickels or quarters in the bottom and put the chalk back in.

Sometimes the chalk doesn't want to stay in tight. Just wrap some masking tape around the last 1/8"-1/4" of the chalk and use a razor to cut off the excess tape extending past the bottom of the chalk.

i use one of those pocket chalkers, but without the jump cue portion attached
:D

i chalk from the center out also (all swipe, no drilling)

mine is basically just a rubber holder for my chalk...

for me, my sweaty hands wear the paper off most chalks i use for more than a month
if it wasnt for that, i'd prefer using just chalk... (oh, my "rubber" also helps others realize its not there chalk lol) easy to spot from any distance

but, all that aside, i know where your coming from, seems that a few weeks worth of using my chalk, the "holder" would wipe off the chalk i'm trying to apply

so, my fix is to put a few quarters under my chalk (inside the rubber holder obviously)
after a month or so, i have to trim the paper on the sides of my chalk, add another quarter(as a spacer), and its good to go for a month or so.

sorry, i'm not at home, or i'd take pics to illustrate better

try to visualize my holder, with 4 quarters, and a cube on top
i have got "useable" cubes with less than a third of its "original height"-
i do find that less than that, it "falls out" with agressive jump cue chalking

never tried to use that much more out of a piece of chalk - if i did, i'd have to find a tighter fitting cube holder or glue something to the chalk in order to provide a "leverage" of sorts

if i think about it, i'll snap some photos after work when i get home

hope that all makes sense
;)

Yeah...I've seen someone else do this, but I'm wondering if someone has or knows of anyone who has a holder that takes this into consideration and doesn't have to me "modified" by me...

It might just boil down to me doing the same thing...

Funny! :p It all made sense... I still want to see if some company has addressed this issue so I don't have to alter what's I've paid for... ;)

Jason:

First of all, accolades to you for chalking properly! (I'm assuming that you are not a driller.)

Second, what kind of chalker are you using (some kind of pocket chalker with a stick that goes in your pocket)? Have you tried a magnetic chalker?

Something like this:

http://seyberts.com/products/Ultimate_Chalker-136-73.html

(Hint: don't use the "chalk clip" that comes with the Ultimate Chalker. Rather, just glue a small piece of steel -- like a piece tin-snipped from the bottom of a soup can -- onto the bottom of your cube of chalk, that the magnet in the belt/pocket clip attracts to. This way, you can wear your chalk all the way down, without the sides of a "chalk clip" getting in the way.)

Or, on the higher end, this:

http://chalkshark.com/

(The only issue with this one, is the same problem -- the chalk holder itself may prevent you from wearing it down as far as you like.)

I personally like the Ultimate Chalker (the first link above) because the only dependency it has, is that you have a piece of ferrous metal attached to the bottom of the chalk that the magnet in the belt/pocket clip attracts to.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the electrician's trade, but you know those steel electrical boxes with the pre-cut round "knockouts" that you push a screwdriver through, to attach steel conduit, Romex or steel-jacketed cable to the resulting hole?

Steel-Knockout-Box-CMR-2-.jpg

Those round knockouts are perfect for the Ultimate Chalker -- you just apply a bit of sandpaper to them to get rid of any sharp burrs, then glue/epoxy them to the bottom of a cube of chalk. And, if you go to any electrician, he/she can give you a boxload of these things -- probably swept from the floor of the back of his/her truck.

Another idea is a belt clipped pouch to insert a naked cube of chalk into:

Just a couple of ideas -- hope this is helpful!

Sean,

First...thanks for the initial accolade...it drives me CRAZY to see people grinding the chalk into the tip...it's a waste of chalk and messy!

Second...I'm not using one, because I haven't found one that holds the chalk the way I want! :(

Third...Those are all great ideas. I've seen those holders before, but I was once again left with them surrounding too much of the chalk (except the pouch). However, I LIKE your idea of using the cut-outs glued to the bottom of the chalk and using the magnetic holder!!! Good Idea!!! However, I'd still like to see if there is any "pocket chalker" that might have solved the problem. I keep thinking if I keep it clipped to my belt/pants that I'd have a propensity for continuously picking it up off the floor as I'd inadvertantly keep knocking it off the magnetic...

Fourth...You're awesome! Thanks for taking the time to look up all those links!!! I've noticed your posts on MORE THAN ONE occasion (in fact, pretty much always!) in which you share a lot of ideas and knowledge! Thank you!

Jason:

Thank you for the accolades! It is why I'm here; I have this motto I live by, when it comes to what I do for a living (knowledge transfer) -- "what's mine, is now yours!"

As to those magnetic holders. The biggest problem with them is that the magnet (on the belt/pocket clip) is not strong enough, and if you bump against something, the chalk is knocked-off. I've found the Ultimate Chalker's magnet to be of the rare-earth type, and extremely strong -- as strong as the magnet pried from a stereo speaker. And, if you pair that with a dense piece of ferrous metal glued to the bottom of your cube of chalk (e.g. the knockouts from steel electrical boxes), you have a combination that's not easily knocked away.

The ChalkShark (second link in my post) is also a great product, because it pairs TWO rare-earth magnets -- one on the belt/pocket clip, and one on the chalk -- to make a very strong bond. Not so strong that you're expending a lot of effort to get your chalk free when you need it, but strong enough that even if you sit down in a chair, the arms of the chair are not going to knock the cube of chalk away from the holder (or if the arm does, the cube merely rocks to one side, then immediately snaps back once it's clear of the arm). The problem (or inconvenience? inflexibility?) is that you're dependent on both magnets. I'm assuming the same thing can be done with the steel electrical box knockouts, and, with just one magnet, you'll have essentially the same thing as the Ultimate Chalker (but at a higher price point).

Thanks again for the kind words. The fact that I'm able to help, keeps me here.

When the chalk gets below the rim of the chalker, I jack the chalk up with a couple of pennies in the bottom. I can always use about 2/3rds of the chalk before I replace it.

Terry:

How about this idea (just call me "Ideas Central" ;) ) -- the combination of a strong rare-earth magnet with a stick-based pocket chalker?

That is, you have the normal stick-based pocket chalker (the one with the stick that inserts in your pocket), the normal couple of links of small chain that comes with it, coupled to a rare-earth magnet that attracts to a disk of ferrous metal glued to the bottom of a cube of chalk? This way, you can wear the chalk down as far as you want, and when it's time to replace it, you just pull it away from the magnet, throw that worn chalk away (including the "disposable" disk of metal glued to the bottom of it), and then replace it with another fresh cube of chalk with a ferrous disk glued onto the bottom of it?

Just tossing around some ideas. I might try that myself.

Sean,

I've been mulling the same idea around since you brought the other up...the only "downside" I can think of is whether the paper on the bottom of the chalk cube will withstand months of use...if the metal glued to the bottom of the cube ever rips loose (constant taking the chalk off the magnet would stress it over time), I don't think there'd be any way to reattach another metal disc to what's left of the chalk...

Actually, the glue I use is the water-as-a-catalyst polyurethane type, like this:

http://gorillaglue.com/

...or a better version I found (less likely to cure inside the bottle as Gorilla Glue does):

http://elmers.com/product/detail/E9415?filterPath=hardware/all-purpose

You use water as the catalyst to "cure" this glue. And, this glue "follows" water as it expands and cures. So all you do is thoroughly wet the bottom of the cube of chalk (make sure the paper is soaked, through to the bottom of the chalk itself), and the glue will "follow" the water right into the chalk itself. Thus the bond is through the paper, into the chalk cube. I know this, because I tried to pry the metal electrical box knockout from the bottom of a completely exhausted piece of chalk, and it actually ripped the bottom layer of chalk away.

Give it a try -- it works!

YOU ARE THE MAN! I just checked eBay for rare earth magnets...all I have to do is buy 50 of them! :p I'll check Lowes locally! If I take a regular pocket chalker, glue a magnet into it and cut the plastic holder down to the level of the magnet, all I have to do it glue the "disposable" metal pieces to the bottom of the cube... I THINK THIS WILL WORK! (I know...I said earlier I was looking for "no modification"...I lied! )

Maybe kamui can make one that has a screw out bottom, as your chalk gets used you turn a knob and a plate in the bottom of the holder pushes the chalk up to the top.

Now if kamui comes up with it they could sell it for $150...lol

Another vote for boosting the cue up with nickels. Quarters probably won't fit. Or for a more light weight option you can fold strips of paper into a square that will fit inside. I Ordered just the chalk holder potion of the ChalkShark and I finished an entire piece of blue diamond !
