Pocket Chalkers and Pro's under pressure

In the tournaments that have a shot clock, I don't see why the Pro's don't use pocket chalkers. At least a couple times in a match I see a player rushing around the table to grab the chalk on the table. Can someone enlighten me?

Force of habit -- and I agree! Lots of time is wasted going around the table to locate and place into one's hand a cube of chalk, and pool is the only cue sport where players do this. (Not snooker, not 3-cushion, not Russian Pyramid.)

Once I personally got used to using a pocket/belt chalker, I can honestly say I'll never go back to placing a cube on the table. The sheer time (and lack of interruption to your rhythm / PSR) saved is just too much to ignore.

Because

Having a pocket chalker is still viewed as amatuerish. I, personally, have a pocket chalker but hardly every use it. I am so used to using chalk off the table, it is just hard to get used to using a pocket chalker.

I also have an old pocket chalker that i never use. I just quickly came to the conclusion that i have a pocket & a cube of chalk and that i don't need a piece of wood, bullet casing or whatever else in my pocket too.

Yeah, I recall playing in a amatuer baseball league about 30 years ago, all about 20-25 year olds, and remembering someone yelling at our team about an incident and saying it was "bush league" ? Really, where the hell did he think he was playing, Yankee Stadium :)

Is there a reason having chalk on hand minus blue pant pockets is amatuerish? Just seems convienent to me... but I'm an amatuer so maybe that's why...

The only time I look for the chalk is my first shot after that every ball pocketed I chalk and I know its right next to me where I left it (I don't use Kamui )LOL

Me too... it's always right next to me on the rail. I never walk to the next shot without it. I don't even think about it... just happens.

Wait what? I play 3c as my primary cue sport and everyone I know keeps chalk on the table. They just take it with them when they walk to their next shot. I didn't hear of pocket chalkers since that one other thread about them. I haven't noticed it with pool either... Maybe I just haven't paid much attention or it's just my area.

What works best, is what works best. I would guess that people at the top of their game aren't worried about appearing like an amateur. They are going to use the best tools for the job no matter how they look.

I don't actually see how where I place my chalk, whether on the rails or in my pocket, affects how comfortable my opponent is sitting in their chair. Just make sure you rack tight and I won't pester you about where your chalk is.

Unless it's on the rails. Upside down.

If you do that, I'll say bad things about you on the internet.

several pro's Do use pocket chalkers -- or, more often, they use belt-clip ones.

and i've never heard anyone call either Darren Appleton or Danny Harriman "amateurish".

hillbilly uses a piece of deer antler on a pocket chalker. go up to him and tell him that it is amateurish. i think he had it custom made for himself. whatever works, works.

If you use one just be sure it matches your glove or everyone will laugh at you.

IMHO most Pocket Chalkers are more troble than they are worth IMHO, as you can only use about 10-15% of the Chalk before they need to be refilled. As you have a Chalk with a Cavity other wise. Most of my pants have a Watch Pocket that I put my calk in between shots. If I get CHALK on my clothing no big deal, as Ihave a cloths washing machine.

I use Blue Diamond so I just picked up the habit of just hanging on to it.
1. Chalk.
2. Put chalk on table.
3. Shoot the ball.
4. Pick up chalk.
5. Chalk while walking to you next shot.
Repeat.
It really just becomes habit after you do it for a while.

I used to use a chalker but it would blue my shorts/pants and I really didn't like that.

Just so happens I have a glove which matches my pocket chalker. Wanna play some? :groucho:

j/k man! I couldn't resist!

(We missed ya last night)

Ken

p.s. My glove really does match my chalker....I just don't wear it. Besides after Mr. Owen took over Joe's it is never humid in there! ;)

You can remove the chalk as it wears down and place some folded paper underneath like a shim. That way you can use the whole cube even as it wears down.
