Poker in the Pool Rooms

Anyone else go into their pool room and there are 60 people playing free poker and 2 people playing pool? The majority of the people in my pool room these days don't know which end of the stick to chalk. Its all fine and dandy that people want to play free poker but here is my issue (inspired by the cell phone ringing thread earlier.) I was playing a guy the other night about 50 ft. from the "poker area." I was down on a ball that wasn't tough but wasn't a gimme either and mid-stroke there is this Explosion of commotion from the poker area, i'm sure someone cracked aces with a 9-7 or something and everyone felt the need to scream like banshees. Regardless, i missed the shot which i am not blaming solely on the sharking but it didn't help. Anyways, the same thing happened to my opponent two games later. Anyone else have any thoughts on poker for points in the pool room (pardon my alliteration)?
 
I feel your pain as I am dealing with the same thing where I play. They started setting up a "consolation table" for the losers to play poker against each other when they get knocked out, and they put it right next to the table I always play on. I have had to deal with cigar smoke in my face, noise, nowhere to put my drinks/cues etc., and the worst is that they always steal every stool in the whole place. We usually lean cues against the rail, and the poker players are always sliding the cues over to make room for their drinks. Twice I have seen the poker players accidentaly knock over a players cue putting a big dent in the shaft. One night I had my case sitting on a stool (because there was no room on the rail thanks to the poker) and was leaning up against it while my opponent shot. I got up to shoot, and when I turned around my case was on the floor and a poker player was walking away with the stool. I followed him to the other end of the room where he set it up to use as a table for his drinks. After a confrontation with the guy, the manager got involved and let him keep the stool!!! I play every day, and between drinks and table time, I drop a fortune in there, yet I am supposed to lay down and let some jerkoff who doesn't spend a dime (he drinks water and plays free poker) steal my stool? I no longer go in when I know there will be poker, and most of the serious players have started doing the same. The pool room where I play is a franchise and I have started making complaints to corporate, but I doubt it will do anything.
 
If i stopped going in every time they play poker i could never go. They have it 5 nights a week. By the way can someone explain the appeal of free poker? i mean poker is a game played with money. Money is like the cue stick of poker. Its the tool you use to play the game. To me playing poker for free is like playing pool with broom sticks.. or wiping before you poop... just don't make sense

Haha. That's funny I don't care who you are.

The poker people do bug me. For a pool hall owner I'm sure it's great. But it does annoy me.

However the most annoying to me are the people watching football at the pool hall. A lot of times they'll stand in your table area so they can see the big screen. Or multiple games at once. And if you hit them with your stick they look at you like you're the one who should get out of the way.

On top of that they are yelling and screaming constantly. "That's My Boy!!!! I told you the panthers (Is that even a team?) are gonna take it". Then one play later. "Heeelllllllllll Yeah!!!! Us Falcons are coming back." Then they start betting out loud and name dropping every player they know in the NFL/College and try to sound like political figureheads discussing international policy except the subject is Football.
 
Thanks to the television coverage the past few years and the huge explosion in the game, everybody and their friggin grandmother thinks they are card players. Look at the world series of poker.... it has literally been ruined by amatures.
Im surprised to hear about poker in pool halls, its kind of a shame that they have to add something like poker in hopes of drawing a crowd. I would look for another pool hall, or get a bunch of the regulars together and appeal to the management to keep it to 1 or 2 nights a week. Reminds me of one place I used to play where the owner (who just bought the place) let the counter person decide on maroon for the new cloth so it would match the wanescoat on the walls. After a few weeks, every one of the serious players were gone, and he was closed within 6 months. Room owners need to remember, if you are not going to cater to the people stuffing the tills every night...... you wont have those tills to worry about for very long.

I say we set up some pool tables right next to all the poker tables in the casinos.. get them ****ers back.

No one is allowed to play on the 2 back tables any more period,they are now the "poker" tables,and if there is a poker game going on on the 3rd table,no one can play pool on the 2nd table,leaving only the front table,which is pretty much for old men's style bank pool,where scratches don't count against you and you can kick balls in. In accordance with this dilemma,I am now playing almost exclusively on bar tables. I like poker,especially when watching the good players play it on TV,but I think that telling someone that they can't play pool on the only non-bar tables in town because there are 8 guys hiding from their wives/girlfriends and playing a meaningless 10 dollar buy-in Hold-Em game is disgusting. Same thing here at the only room within 40 miles of me.

The room I used to play in is now a "poker hall." There used to be 10 tables that were used for pool. Now they use the tables to play cards on! What a joke. If I am lucky, I may get on one of the 2 remaining tables that are actually used for pool. But as many others have stated, you are made to feel as if you are intruding on their card game. Last time someone stole the stool I was using, I promptly walked over to him as he piled his ashtray and drink on it then set everything on the floor and took my stool back. Didn't go over very well with the card players, but I stuck to my guns and kept the stool.

Someone else said it too, now that they televise all the poker games, everyone and their brother thinks they are a freaking poker player.

Oh well, enough complaining for now LOL. I guess I just have to make the 40 mile drive to shoot pool on something other than my 6 footer. Hey its all I have room for, but at least I can play right?

Hell yeah. Let's grab some dollys and some coin-ops and go to town. Then we'll move on to every annoying pool hall personality.

After we conquer the casinos we'll take on the football feilds. We'll slap some tables down on the 50 yard line. "What. We are in your way. Just play around us you have another whole Hundred yards you can use. By the way can you keep the noise down I'm trying to concentrate".

Then we'll conquer the people who come to a pool hall just to drink and only drink. They sit at the bar and flirt with the bar maids for hours on end. While your waiting for your freaking chiken wings.

So we'll go to the regular bars and throw some pool tables down. How about right in front of the bar? Then we'll show the bar maids for hours on end how to do a combo shot or a cool trick shot and distract her so the whyno can't get his drink for hours on end.

Then the dart people. I feel that the space 3 dart boards take up could easily fit a 7ft coin-op. That's one more table to be occupied and a little less I have to wait for a table.

This popularity of poker does make me wonder. Do we really want the IPT to become what the World Series of Poker is???

What is a pool hall owner to do if 60 people will come to play poker but only 2 will play pool? Offer poker, obviously. Same goes for karaoke, which I find far more distracting than poker.

What do poker and karaoke have in common? Both are free entertainment! The proprietor makes his money on food and beverage sales. So, pool player, start eating and drinking more. Recruit other pool players who do the same. Then lobby for free pool.

Poker players and karaoke fans invading pool rooms is akin the so-called illegal immigrant problem. We who believe ourselves to be the lawful occupants take umbrage at "invasions" of others who do not behave as we do or value the same things we do. It's a sign of weak adaptive ability and an evolutionary disadvantage. We are competing for the room owner's resources. We have to develop competitive advantages in order to survive.

Is this guy serious? Why don't they put a dance floor in the middle of a pool room? I know... put a batting cage over in the corner by the bar boxes.... Both of those would draw more people... but that defeats the purpose of it being a POOL hall... and all that crap about illegal immigrants in non-sense... the use of a pool room as a microcosm of political shortcomings is both stupid and irrelevant... but hey, if it weren't for opinions like that then i wouldn't seem so smart

In my pool hall we do have a competitive advantage (according to the manager the poker is costing more money than it's making), but because it is a chain and all of the other rooms in the chain are making money from the poker, it is here to stay. My biggest complaint isn't about the room bringing in poker, but rather the lack of respect from the poker playing losers. When they first came in I tried to rescpect their space by putting my case and drinks elsewhere, and offering extra stools. This has been repaid by the poker players knocking over expensive cues, stealing the stool out from under me, and turning to blow their cigar smoke directly into my face so as not to blow it over the poker table. I guess I do have a problem with people who don't value the same things as me, because these poker players don't value common courtesy or respect in the least.

I did see a few poker rooms in florida .Maybe it will get so big
they will get there own place . I am kinda with everyone else on this
it does kinda get on my nerves .So if its bad I go to one of the
places around Atlanta that is still just a pool hall ......:)
 
Difference being that playing poker in a pool hall is legal... sneaking into the country is not.

To downplay the effect of illegal immigration and overpopulation and draining of government resources by using a pool analogy is pretty sad.

When they pass a law to make playing free poker in pool halls illegal, I'll come march for the illegals.

The proprietor is not interested in more people. He wants more profits. If the average pool player is more profitable than the average poker player, he would rather fill his room with pool players. So eat and drink more than the poker players. OTOH, if there aren't enough pool players to fill his room, then he'll fill the remainder with poker players, karaoke "singers", dancers, and batters. So go find more pool players and bring them to your room.

The distinction is meaningless for our purposes here. The issue is one of practicality, not morality. How can pool players avoid being inconvenienced by non-pool players?

Stop being sanctimonious, please. A pool room's problems are no less significant than those of Government.
