Poll: Have you improved in the past year?

If today, you matched up against your former self from a year ago, how would you do?

For me, this isn't even a question. I would absolutely destroy the player I used to be a year ago. The thing that changed is I now understand what it means to play position, and how. I'm still very far from where I'd like to be but I really must thank you for your post because just this week I was contemplating hanging up my sticks because I couldn't find an answer I wanted to.

But, this post forces me to realize that I actually have improved quite a bit since last year and I'm steadily moving forward to master-dom =)

I would definitely beat myself from a year ago. My game hasn't improved that much, but I've learned how to get weight! ;)

I had a lot of the ingredients, but was not quite putting it together a year ago. Took some lessons, and spent time practicing, so took a jump up in skill. I suspect that I will plateau for a while before my next jump up.

I might break even or barely win because that's how inconsistent my game is. But although i'm playing far less than i did a year ago I know for sure that I've improved. Ive taken a different approach to a few things and changed my stance but since i don't get to play more than twice a week (if i'm lucky, and that's picking up the stick not that i'm "playing someone") my consistency is all over the place.
But i've been on a roll the last few weeks, still shooting good and feeling good at the table.

I would beat my former self by a decent margin. And I hope, and will work at, being able to say that next year and the year after....

Remind me again...how long are major snooker tournaments?

Like 27 days?

The world chmapionships are played over 17 glorious days, but most tournaments are best of 7s until the semis or finals. Matches generally last an hour or two. Finals will be played over 2 sessions, each lasting 2-3 hours.

Now, is there any other trolling you'd like me to clear up?

I'm glad my post kept you motivated. I actually thought it was a dumb post and I tried to delete it but it wouldn't let me lol.

On New Years Day I decided to write down goals that I wanted to meet by the end of the year. For example, running a certain amount of racks, winning so many tournament matches, doing so well in league, beating certain people that are better than me, etc. I like to look back at the list every so often just to see how far I've come from 8 months ago. Maybe this could help you? Gotta stay motivated somehow...

Nope not really, I've been playing at the same level for quite sometime.

Then again I don't miss much either

I voted don't remember but now I do.
Since I started playing again in 2013, I've had some very good days and some very bad weeks.
One year ago, I was in a major slump and right now I'm in a minor slump.
From September 2014 through March 2015, I was playing pretty good for the current me.
Then Spring came and I had to work in the yard and garden for 2 months :(
My daughter and grandson were here for a couple of weeks.
My back is bothering me but I think I would win :)

My consistency has been a lot better lately. I didn't play as much as I would have liked to the last few years having young kids and all. But, since I got a table in basement when they go to sleep at night it is game on.

I would lose by a lot. I have been working way too much overtime this year after my employer fired a coworker. Not getting even half the table time I was getting a year ago.:frown:

I'm not getting 1% of the table time I was getting a year ago...

Feel lucky, I'm not getting 1% of the table time I was getting a year ago.

Why do you lot put such emphasis on endurance?

I don't get it.

What your brain fails to get is that rotation pool has more of a luck factor than the other pool games and cue sports. No one has a problem with races to 200 points in straight pool (which would only last 2-3 hours on average) because the best player typically wins, and even if your opponent runs 100 balls in his first inning, you can still fight back. In these silly short race 9 ball tournaments, it's nearly impossible to comeback if your opponent charges out to a decent lead.

Short rack rotation games (9 ball/10 ball) were conceived by gamblers and were typically looked down upon by the straight pool players of the day. That's not to say that rotation games aren't great games, but they need long races to make for a compelling match.

Want to see the apex of the game? Efren vs. Earl race to 120. That's real 9 ball, with players exchanging packages like boxers exchanging power punches.

Races to anything less than 13 are a contest to see who can get the most rolls and who gets hot faster. Even 13 is theoretically too short, but is a nice middle ground for tournaments.

Furthermore, endurance has always been a part of pool. You're new to the game if you think otherwise.

I would have no chance of winning with my former self of any year....
....'cause the older I get, the better I used to play.
:):o:)

Funny thing is, Brian McCurley a old friend of mine when I took this game up used to tell me he played so much better when he was my age. I took it that I was going to be stuck never getting better. But in reality I have taken and made so many more amazing shots when I did not comprehend what I was doing. I have developed so much more strategy and game plan that those amazing shots I took and made and lost the game makes sense now. Shot making is important, but having a plan and sticking to it is what makes a player better. Wisdom on the table will beat bravado any day.

I've only been seriously playing for about a year or so, with a long break in the middle, however been back at it and I would destroy me a year ago LOL.
