Not so long ago, I got a call from a prospective customer asking for my rates. I am in the transcription industry, banging out pages for a living. When I provided a quote, the caller seemed surprised at the cost. I mean, after all, anybody can type.

What some may not realize is that when you're providing a service, much like my business, you are actually paying for the wisdom and expertise of the service provider. I do know the difference between "its" and "it's," "affect" and "effect," "discrete" and "discreet," and transcribing verbatim is a whole different animal than hard-copy typing.

The other day, I took my car in for service. It took the mechanic 5 minutes to fix the problem, and I got a bill which seemed pretty high to me. What I realized in hindsight is that the mechanic's years of experience enabled him to pinpoint the exact problem quickly. Same with plumbers, electricians, and most service providers.

I don't mind paying for quality, and I do like the sketch drawings of the photos. Keith saw the one sketch of him solo and is quite impressed, and so am I. I can't wait to get it blown up and framed! :)

I know what you mean there. Mechanics are charging 70 an hr at the dealership where I bought my car. Same with the electricans and plumbers. They charge 'ride time' to and from your house nowadays. Not just the labor once they get there.

Im so happy you and Keith both like the sketches! It's something a little off the wall, or maybe ON the wall!! In this case..........

Rick, I really like the sketch of Keith smoking the cigarette at the Holiday Inn bar during the 2003 U.S. Open. Please let me know the cost of getting that one and this one below enlarged, so that I can get them framed. :p

Don't want to start anything but...

In my opinion Rick's versions are better quality than the other examples posted. Whether they are digital or not, and I expect that they are, it is obvious that he has spent a lot of time honing his technique on this.

I DO spend quite a bit of time on the computer, averaging 6-8 hrs almost everyday.

I'm sure Diana has her hands full taking those GREAT photos. Traveling as much as she does, I'm surprised she has any time to do anything at all. She's a very talented Lady, and it shows!

Yes, Diana is a very talented photographer and I enjoy her work very much. I certainly meant no disrespect to anybody. I enjoy Eydie's photography and art as well.

I was just trying to respond to folks who might get the idea that "anybody can do it". As a photographer myself I know how difficult it is to create things that REALLY look good via digital manipulation.

The sketch version looks good, especially the soliatary picture of Keith, but I think the art if any was in taking the picture. My gut tells me it is pretty simple stuff anybody properly trained in using a good graphics program can do. I'll send a link to my son who is an oil-paint artist and formerly a graphic designer and ask him what he thinks.

Photoshop is one of the most complex and diverse computer programs there is anywhere. "Proper" training can consist of SEVERAL years. It is a profession, in it's own right, And the proper training won't teach you how to be creative, that comes on your own. Knowing what to do, and when, only comes by experience. (Thanks JAM!)It can't be taught from a book. Sure, you might learn the basics, but that is it. The going rate for a Photoshop 'person' is 70.00 an hr, right now. Almost all colleges offer it now.

I'll give you a good example...My nextdoor neighbor is a Graphic Arts teacher, he teaches Photoshop. (And has for 15 years) Yet there is no way, he can achieve the same looks I can. (just as I can't copy him) He constantly asks me work on an images for him, And he's the teacher. He's solid, on all the technical features..but lacking createivness. You tend to develop your 'own' styles.


Not too mention the 'equipment' you have to have..

I bought a new computer last yr, pretty much designed for use with Photoshop. You have to have a good computer, with LOTS of memory. You need a real good monitor, calibrated of course. Along with a calibration device. All sorts of Plug-Ins (Which you have to purchase) ...De-Noisers, Actions, de-blurrers, and the list goes on and on.

I literally have thousands of dollars invested, and thousands of hours put into working with Photoshop. It's something that amazes me, and that I LOVE doing. I think THAT is the key...you have to like it, and want to continue to learn. I think my love for it shows in my work...it has to! Or your just another face in the crowd. I'm damn proud of ANYTHING that leaves here, and want the customer to be too.

I come from the Graphic Arts field also. It's really the only job I have ever had. So really, I have been around it my whole life. And my Wife is an accomplished Artist also, she's a painter using acrylics.

It's not as easy as you might think to get properly trained. There is a lot of time and effort that goes into everything I turn out. You might think it's 'press' a button, and Waa-Laaa!! It's not...
