What do you all think about the pool commentating of Ewa and Mitch Lawrence on ESPN?

I think their commentary is f#cking awful, and ESPN needs to can them and go with Allen Hopkins and 1 other commentator.

i agree 100% with this.

why's mitch even doing commentary? it's obvious he's never played a day in his life

If I am not mistaken, ESPN only sells the time for the WPBA productions. ESPN doesn't have any control over the announcers.

The WPBA is responsible for the announcers... blame or give credit to the WPBA for the current announcer teams.

BTW, Mitch Lawrence is Ewa's husband. just incase you didn't know, and according to the poll numbers

as of 4:25 PDT Oct 28th, 31 voters think that Mitch and Ewa are either good or GREAT... only 20 think they suck.

i probably should keep my mouth shut , because i cant remember his name.
but the young man than sat in on the 1 pocket match with john and mike on the ipt matchup.
i think he is has something to do with those extreme fighting matches . or maybe not. Mark maybe, he post here sometimes too.
lol .. how about some help here cant remember names well.

The color commentary and production of any sports program, is in many ways more important to the success of the programming than the program itself. Its just like the movies, some actors/actresses suck, some can make you enjoy just about anything (Paul Newman). There are good and there are bad, no different than the NFL, some are good, some ok, and some are just great and make the show that much better. Wonder how many of the announcers working for the WPA have taken classes, or done other things to IMPROVE what they are doing, I'd like to bet on that. Pool on TV in general does not evolve to make you want to watch it more & more, and I don't know if it can.

Who amongst us can honestly say they have never been practicing in a quiet corner and started fantasizing about Mitch commentating on what a great player they are?

Of course I think part of the problem is that we are all insanely jealous of Mr. Laurence. After all he gets paid to sit and watch Pro Pool all day and then gets to go home with Ewa at night!

In all seriousness though, whilst it can certainly get repetitive you have to recognize that the WPBA appear to value consistency and professionalism in their presentations. I can't think of any other televised Pool in the USA that has been presented this well over this period of time. Mitch also gets hires for non-WPBA events on ESPN (Champion of Champions, World Summit of Pool etc.) so it's not just the WPBA who like him.

I think Ewa does a pretty good job, but I'm not that crazy for Mitch. I agree,he does use the nicknames way too much. I do like Dawn though, too.

Should get a soccer announcer to add some excitement. I can't think of that famous one's name, but here's a random clip I found. Listen to the excitement! Imagine them calling a pool match... FOOOOOUUUUUUUL, SCRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATCH, Niiiiiiiinne-baaaaaaahhhhhhhhhllllll. She's on the HIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLL. LOL makes me laugh to think about it

There's a big, fun project for some of you techies out there, do a voice over of a pool match. That would be funny.

she is good, he sucks, together they are ok. but i turn the volume down anyways.

An inexplicable tradition of this forum is that about once per calendar quarter somebody feels compelled to complain about Mitch and/or Ewa Laurance.

Mitch is not asked to offer much analysis, and, as well as moderating the telecast, he has the responsibility to the event sponsor of giving them the right publicity and press (as the WPBA collects a solid sanctioning fee from the venue sponsor). In this regard, I think his work is rock solid.

Ewa does a solid job in analyzing the play and offering insights into the players, their tendencies and their strengths and weaknesses, and she is quite articulate in her speech. She is also a fomer Scandinavian model, which makes for good TV.

The WPBA has made its pro pool product successful through its telecasts, and in doing so, has produced the only sustainable pro pool business model in America over the past thirty years.

So, to the naysayers on the forum, the many WPBA bashers who are so often outspoken on AZB, bash the WPBA product and its announcers all you like, and when you are finished, take a few moments to applaud the only American pool organization that, through TV, has managed to maintain any kind of continuity.

All the WPBA bashing on this forum disturbs me a lot. The WPBA is the state of the art in America when it comes to managing the production and presentation of pro pool, and that's why it has been around for so long.

Anyone taking up billiards commentary should be made to sit in room and listen to the BBC's Clive Everton for 8 hours straight, and learn from the best in the biz. He knows when to talk, when to shut up and what to say, he knows why he is there, not to just twitter on.

Your soo right, you don't tell it, you Sell it. Top notch announcers have a great skill, like Allison Fisher. I've yet to see any announcer have as much skill on the mike as she has on the table. For the women to have sooooooooo much coverage and NOT have that person in place is only holding them and the sport back, and NOT good for their own business. I'm not bashing them, I just think they could do so much more with a color commentator with equal skill in his trade as Allie is in her trade.

Well said. I tuned in to watch the game not listen to the commentator speak. British announcers are generally pretty good about that.

I make exceptions for Grady, Danny and Billy as I enjoy their stories.

I was aware the Mitch and Ewa are married, although it's pretty hard to tell just from how they interact with one another during the commentary.

31 Voters think that they're are either OK or Great. Not good or great. OK is not as favorable is good.
I screwed up on the poll. The OK option is a cop out. I should have only provided 2 options. 1. I like them. 2. I don't like them. Had I done that I would bet you anything that the majority of voters would have voted "I don't like them."

Certainly not with Mitch's commentary. Maybe with Incardona and Diliberto announcing.

Agreed. He has a great gig and Ewa is hot.

This has everything to do with politics and nothing to do with merit IMO.

It's hard to bad commentary with a British accent. Even Mitch would probablly be an upper echelon commentator if he spoke with a British accent.

Could it be because they suck? I've heard very little criticism about accu-stats announcers, only that one person who's a regular poster here doesn't like Grady Mathews commentary. I've never seen any messages posted here complaining about accu-stats commentary.

Ewa's very well spoken, but her pool commentary is mediocre, IMO. She's great to look at but not very good to hear. It makes for bad TV since you hear her a whole lot more than you see her.

What competition do they have on television? They basically have a television monopoly on something that a lot of people like to watch.

The men play better than the women. Politics determines what gets produced and presented.

I think Ewa and Mitch are the best on ESPN, by far.

That's not saying very much, given the low quality of pool commentary ESPN has.

yoyodude9000 said:
Jeanette and Dawn are awful and most of the men have no clue when it comes to grammar or what the people watching even understand about the game.

Jeanette is a great artist. She uses pictures rather than words to express her insightful pool commentary.

The only man who can speak is Mark Wilson, but he sounds like he just learned a bunch of big words, and feels he needs to use them all in one day.

I enjoy Mark Wilson's commentary. I've heard him commentate several accu-stats matches. He seemed articulate to me.

Holly crap, does anyone have anything good to say about anyone anymore?Mitch and Ewa do a good job considering its pool.(not a very exciting sport to watch if you did'nt love the game as much as all of us).

Ewa and Mitch are crap as commentators. Many people feel this way. I'm insulted that ESPN forces pool lovers to listen to their crap commentary when the majority of people don't particularly like them as commentators.

I say nothing but good things about accu-stats.
