Pool cue or a fly rod?

I got a real nice Gary Howell's cane rod 8' for a 4 line, nearly unfished, for sale.

Chopdoc...for me, one of the reasons why I enjoy golf more, is because there is so little luck involved. To me, there is way too much luck in pool.

Interesting notion.

I would think that would vary with the relative skill of the players as well as the particular pool games being played.

I believe I have only actually played golf once. The fact that I was able to finish the game at all seemed to have a great deal to do with luck. I am fairly certain that my pool game, regardless of how rusty it currently is, relies much less on luck than my golf game.

There are many ways to look at it. In golf the distance and environment introduce an incalculable number of independent variables that cannot be controlled.

An example of this might be how much luck is involved in a hole in one versus a long shot on a tight 9 foot pool table. Then again consider running a rack, or 100 balls.

What are your chances of making 18 holes in one versus my making 18 pool shots? Or even better. I will wager that I have a better chance of making a run of 100 than a golfer stands of making 18 holes in one...or probably even one hole in one. One could say if the golfer actually did it, there was a lot of luck involved.

Of course, there are many different ways to look at it, but I think it may not be as straight forward as you seem to propose.

In many games of skill the proportion of luck involved seems to be greater when the skill levels are lower. A bunch of hackers on the golf course seem to be engaging a lot of good fortune to even finish the game, just like a bunch of bangers on pool tables.

Of course, considering the environment a golf ball has infinitely more possibilities to end up somewhere other than the hole in the ground than the variables faced by a pool ball seeking a hole in the table. You can hit a pool ball in almost any direction and have more hope of it finding the hole than a golf ball hit in any random direction finding the hole in the ground. Stated this way it would seem that luck can be more involved in pool. Even more so if you don't have to call the pocket.

There are many ways to look at it.

It all comes down to this.

Me and the guys I run with refer to it as a "Qouram". What it is basically this, When a man attains a "quorum" of something of his desires, be it shotguns, pistols, golf clubs, rifles, fly rods or cue sticks it means that he has enough that his wife or significant other cannot successfully tell when he adds to or subtracts from his collection.
When you are there you have truly arrived.
For myself I have attained a quorum of fly rods, cues, and quality wood working tools.
I ask you, can a man have to many expensive toys. I think not. Life is to short.

Thought about it. Finally got my old ones out of storage (long story) and I am hitting the ball better than ever. I am thinking I will keep them. I haven't been able to play in years and I think I am set for the best scoring season of my life.

If you don't think fishing is aggravating enough then I suggest that you have never met a Florida dock snook. Spawn of the devil. I have had an entire school of them staring up at me one foot off the back end of my boat one day before the start of the season. Next day...gone, back into the shadows, ready to snap off line, rip up reels, and snatch poles into the depths. Evil bastards.

You caught me on that one. Good call out. I don't fish and know nothing about it. Just seems to me people fishing are content and relaxed, as opposed to golf, which must be the most aggravating game on the planet - next to Ink Master.

True Tommy
My friend owns a toy and comic book store. I know why he is in business, to keep everything for himself; I don't think he sold an item in 20 years, lol.

When he looks at my lure collection which is quite large he says, when does it stop at collecting and becomes piling on.
I tell him it's not what you think, when you have a plug that's a hot catcher you stack up on them as you lose them or they discontinue the run.
You need back up reserve, even if it is a 100 of the same one x 100.
Then we have the collectables that you pile on, haha.

When I met my wife she thought I was nuts, now she knows I am insane.

Her words are, I am glad I don't think like you (OCD)
She doesn't know what she is missing.

I have a Catahula Bulldog mix, what a dog.

Have a great day

Lol I'm reminiscing fondly. Golf was my passion until I became a father again 8 years ago. And then stopped cold turkey. I discovered pool 2 years ago and it perfectly replaced golf.
My take is that if you can get to (in golf) the level of playing "bogey golf", that's like being able to almost run a rack. You can kind f control the basics and see your way around but can't 100% execute what you want. But you can play socially with anyone (assuming you're not an a hole), and also choose to either be content or push harder. And that "push" is virtually identical. For both, if you can find someone who can mentor you from neophyte to novice/intermediate, it can be done quickly. And if you're strong at one it could be very fast because you have the DNA and the two games are, at its core, the same challenge.

The friend who started me in pool is now consumed by golf and regularly asks me to come out with him. But I now refuse unless we can can play a set as well. I want to sweep him on a 2 sport afternoon before he does to me. I'd put him at apa 6/7 and I think he just broke 100. I'm at about 4/5 and bitd I played in the mid 80's.

Now if someone can teach me to feel the line and set a hook this post wouldn't exist. I swear those fish decide beforehand what their plan is before the first cast. Sometimes they spot me one, but usually they just snip the wire, keep the lure, take it to a pawn shop and laugh when I show up the next time. Sushi karma, ya know?

THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS for a fishing pole!!!!! How is this possible????

http://www.orvis.com/p/bamboo-1856-805-3-full/2fjx

Granted I don't know anything or have proper appreciation for this thing but this just freaked me out.

Throw in a Jack Charlton reel and you have a nice outfit for about 6 k.
You can also spend $59.99 in 3 easy payments and accomplish the same thing.
Sort of....lol
Have a good day..SS

Dagnabbit...why is it that every time I am trying to choose between buying another cue...or a shaft, or...buying a new fly rod and reel, I go for the fly rod and reel?

Buy a bamboo pole....and a sneaky pete...and with the money you save...
...buy a boat trailer.

I'd have to go with the rod although it would likely be a spinning rod. I own several fly rods but they get very little use as I've migrated to wading creeks and kayaking small rivers. I'd cry if I broke one of my fly rods.

Bought a custom spinning rod from Shakedown Custom Rods last year (He's also an AZ'er). By far my most favorite of the dozen or so very nice production rods I own. Very unique grip shown here at top. http://www.shakedownrods.com/Home.php Incredibly nice!!!

If I survive Tax Season and a huge itch to get another Kayak, I just may get another one these.

You know the old saying, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for the rest of his life, but teach a man pool and he'll be broke for life.

That said, if you know where the seafood section in the grocery is, get a cue.

Well I have enough fly rods and pool cues that my wife won't know if a add another one or two. But, my problem is my real addiction is motorcycles. They are really hard to hide and it's already tough to move around in my garage.

I'd much rather fish than play pool, but I have a weakness for pool cues. Have maybe 25 rods and reels, don't really need any more right now. Did buy a new bass jig rod this winter, and two new reels.
