In July/August I'll be "stuck" with my parents in Honolulu for 16 days (for their anniversary). I've never been to Hawaii before, and hence I wonder if there's any billiards hall worth recommending?

Hawaiian Pool

Peer,

Since you'll be "stuck" in Honolulu, there are only three pool hall type places that I know of. Of course Hawaiian Brians on Kapiolani Blvd, Velvet Touch down near restuaraunt row, and Aiea Cue in Pearl City. Really just depends on where you will be staying because of traffic and distance, but Brians is by far the nicest with plenty of action available. The other two are a little more seedy, but since the ban on smoking have cleaned up a little. I think Velvet touch is the cheapest per hour with Gandy tables, Aiea Cue has nine 9' brunswicks, and Brians has a website you can check out. Hope this helps, PM me if you want any additional info.

I've only been to that island once, and I only went to Hawaiian Brian's, but I liked the place a lot. The tables play really bouncy, but I think it's from all the humidity. I played on Maui too and the tables played the same way (although the pockets were smaller at Hawaiian Brian's). You can go there and play $20-$40/game (maybe more with the right people) until your arm falls off. At least, that's the impression I got from the couple times I went there. I got in a little action there. The first time I think the only reason we quit was because it was Thanksgiving day and they closed at 4:00am (it's usually a 24 hour place) and the only reason we quit the second time was because I had to go catch a flight to Kauai. In both cases, I got the impression that, if not for the circumstances, I could have played as long as I could stand it. Unfortunately, I was told that most of the action takes place in the day time and, since I was on vacation in Hawaii, it's kind of difficult to spend the day in the pool room. If I ever go back to that island I'm going to have to extend the trip by a few days so I can spend some more time at that pool room.

Hawaiian Brians is the best. They have the best cloth, rails, and overall condition of the table. Everyone who has been around knows Aki, he runs a bowling alley now. Pro shop manager is Aku. Second best is Velvets Touch near Compusa/Resaturant Row. Decent tables. Third has got to be Mccully cue and UH cue. They have fast cloth and rails play kinda weird. Mccully cue is close to Zippys on King and UH cue is in Pucks alley located on King and University. Aiea cue has crappy tables imo.

Hawaiian Brian's is a really awesome spot. Every time I went there, it was really packed. I think that was the first time I ever walked into a poolhall to look around and noticed a LOT of people were playing very well. In fact, what I remember most about that room is every girl I saw was REALLY beautiful - and all of them were running out.

They play a different version of 9-ball sometimes, they pay on the 5 and 9 kind of like a ring game even if you are playing singles.

There are some good players and LOT'S of young women to look at when at Brian's, plus the bar downstairs (Osake I think) is lot's of fun from Thurs.-Sat. Just be careful if you drive and park in the parking structure, the turns are killers since there isn't much room for two cars. Drive slow and don't cut the turns early if you like your doors and fenders.

Hawaiian Brian's is the place. Good tables. good people. Be sure to get your parking ticket validated if you drive there. Parking is expensive.
Aiea Cue isn't too bad. Not too big, but there is action. Parking there is crazy. They would LOVE a rental car.
Velvet Touch is ok. Just ok.

So the girls ran out when you walked in..?
(sorry, couldn't resist ;^)

Where is Hawaiian Brian's located -- downtown close by hotels & stuff? How's the neighborhoods around Honolulu, is it safe to walk to/from the hotel at night, or is it all cab-land? Are there parts that I should avoid? My parents put me in charge of finding us a place to stay that is safe yet not too expensive, (they're coming all the way from Norway, and the exchange-rate, dollars v.s. krone, isn't all that great).

The main town area is relatively safe. Just don't wander into Kalihi if you don't have to. But for a tourist there is nothing in Kalihi to see. If you walk in Waikiki at night there are plenty of drunks that may bother you due to the clubbing. It is quite loud there. Which hotel are you staying at? Downtown Hawaii (the business district) is not that close to Waikiki (where most of the hotels are). Cab shouldnt be more then 15 dollars to Hawaiian Brians from Waikiki. The bus will cost two dollars taking the B 13 or 2 on Kuhio Avenue. The closest hotel to Hawaiian Brians is Ala Moana Hotel which is right next to Ala Moana the biggest mall on Oahu. It is also two blocks away from Hawaiian Brians. I'm not too sure where the best rates in Waikiki are so I do not want to lead you astray. Hawaiian Brians is located on Kapiolani Boulevard (major street) and it is practically right across from the convention center.

I've been to Hawaiian Brian's twice. Each time I've seen numerours "players" sitting on the table while shooting.

Is this part of the "hang loose," everything goes, culture?

This is the only place in the world where I've witnessed this "style" of play.

What's up?

They do the same thing in Texas (at least that's how they played when I was in Houston). You can climb up on the table. Being only 5'8", I kind of like the rule. :D

I was out of stroke and hadnt been playing for a while and was going to Hawaii, a friend warned me dont play any of the kids in there, which I knew was good advice, so I went to Hawaiian Brians, I have seen him many times in Sac with 4 or 5 other players and they all played way over my head. I'm in ther e for about 10 minutes and i'm in a race to 11 for $50. I win 2 or 3 games in the race, this kid was running out from everywhere-he didnt know how to stall, it didnt matter I was only fireing one barrel, I didnt care about the $$$. His name was Dewy Cooper, I get back to LA and tell my friend this story and he said Dewy was the strongest player of the kids. I often wondered what happened to him, he was very talented. I was never beat so bad, I never had a shot.

There is another kid named Kali'i that I played in January, he has a lot of potential and a good head on his shoulders. The Wolfman was helping him out and even though Eddie talks more trash than anyone, he knows a lot about the game.
