I hate to ask this but of course this argument came upI

tonight in the pool hall. If a coin is flipped 4 feet in the air and comes down 4 feet and lands on the table bed, how many times did it flip, spin, rotate whatever you want to call it? I have looked on the web and cant find the answer?

I thought a bunch ,like 70, somebody else said 7-10 which I thought was crazy so of course the word bet came up. any help?

slow motion. why didnt I think of that. I think I will rent the camera from the jacksonville experiment and count it out myself. thanks for the help

You cannot say without counting. This is dependent on thumb speed, the pressure of the index finger holding back the thumb, and the speed of the arm moving upward on the toss.

So, that being said, I would say a low guess would be 7, and a high guess would be in the neighborhood of 30-40 or so.

What if the coin go's 3.5ft or 4.25ft? What if the coins hits the table and bounces and flips again or if it hit the rail and flips a few times. What if it hits the light and begins to flip back-wards(Do you deduct backward flips)? How much will depend upon the coins weight and even the airflow in the room at the moment the coin is flipped?

You certainly have a great deal of calculations to make, oh and do not forget about atmospheric density at the time of the flip. This will create drag or friction on metal objects thrown of especially flipped. I would also review Newtons Third Law Of Motion ( For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction along the same lines of tangent);)

Oh and by the way, dont flip out!!!!!!!;)

Good Luck!!!!!

I'll bet $50 in one try I can get the coin to land on heads and I'll toss it up as high as I can.

Wow, this actually came up? There's no answer. Russ is right; it's all dependent on how it's flipped. I bet there are people out there who can make it flip just a single time.

Analyzing coin flips? Is this was we've resorted to?

Nah.. He is using the term "on heads" semantically.

If it lands heads up, he says "it's on heads".

If it lands heads down, he says it's ON heads.

He wins either way. And only wants to bet $50. Haw haw haw.

I posted this in a related thread, and it applies here as well...
