CueJoey...Absolutely, positively NONE of the original Hustler movie was filmed at Chris's Billiards. The original owner, Chris Crisman, didn't even open the room until 1973. The Hustler was made in 1960, and came out in '61, winning best picture. It's likely some ignorance on the part of the owners. The only thing that could relate to that, is that TCOM was marketed in Japan as The Huster II. There are 1000's of those old posters still around.:D

Well, I said the same thing and could not prove it either way. I did not know about the Hustler II situation. That is an interesting thing all by it self. I won't edit the post or it will confuse this conversation, but I am glad someone could confirm that for me. Thanks brother Scott!

The next time you are in town, get a hold of me and I'll get you into the Illinois Billiards Club in Willow Springs, where Jim Parker has been running straight pool leagues for about 30 years. Small but interesting place with nice 9 foot anniversary tables with simonis 760, a 5 by 10 table and a 3 cushion table. Red Shoes in Alsip is a little rougher but has straight pool leagues and lots of one pocket and banks.

Pro-Tyme is a very nice room about 10 minutes from where I live.

Is this the place where the BNSF has railroad tracks behind it? I think I have been there once and of course, couldn't get in. I doubt I will get to come back up there now that I got a new position and won't be traveling like before. However, I won't forget your offer if I do get to come back up there. The day I was there they were asphalting the front. The owner (I think) was very nice talking to me outside though.

The only place on your list that I think I was at (after over a hundred places, it starts to get fuzzy, LOL) was the The Green Room. But I don't think it is the one you are referring too. I went to the one in North Aurora. I also went to The Golden Cue on I think Montrose(?) near Kimble. It was an old time pool hall. It looked rough on the outside, but was a great place when I got inside. I have a friend that lives like 3 blocks from there, so I got him to go there with me a couple of times. We has a blast. It is the right flavor of nostalgia to it. Really nice people! Front table seems to have some action throughout the day. They were playing 1 pocket both time I was there.

Hey Scott, Now, I've got to correct you....Chris Crisman was not, as you said, the original owner, consequently he never did, "open the room in 1973" - It was already there for several years with the name, Bob's Billiards - A 3 cushion billiard player named Bob Ries was the guy who first opened the poolroom that later became Chris's Billiards.

The Hustler filming at Chris' PLOT thickens. HMMMM?

Hey Donavan, No, the plot doesn't thicken, I was only correcting Scott re. Chris's Billiards history....The poolroom only existed for about three years before Chris bought it.....So as Scott said, it didn't exist at the time that the Hustler was made.

That's interesting, and I didn't know that. Wonder if Freddie knows anything about Bob's Billiards. I do remember that when Chris first opened, he only had the front room with tables (and there were always 3-c tables), at the top of the stairs...unlike now where there are three big rooms. Chris was a great guy, who really cared about pool, and gave a lot back, over the 3 decades he owned that room.

Well shoot. I wonder why they put that on those business cards? To me that is still the real mystery.

LMAO!

I just called Chris' and there was a part time worker there who had no idea when the place was turned into a pool hall or even knew that the Hustler was mentioned on the Bus Card. Oh well, we will try again later.

Chris' Billiards and The Hustler

I spoke to one of the owners, and he said that the Ames scenes were filmed there. I don't, of course recoginize any of that, so how much of that was a set, I have no idea. The Bus Card says the place has been open since 1937, even though it was not called Chris's prior to the 70's.

Anybody have any thoughts on this info.

Freddy and Grady, where are you when we need your history lesson?
