pool in cleveland

River City Billiards is a good place. Wally runs a nice pool hall. There are some excellent players that shoot there. Its also in a good neighborhood if that means anything.

Can you be more specific in where you are staying (Downtown, East ,West, South)? River City is a good spot if downtown or west.

Don

Wickliffe Lanes is good (Northeast).

Agreed,I usually practice down the street from there,if your looking for action I know some places downtown where the big boys play for some serious stakes, but just for some friendly games let us know where in town you'll be and we'll guide you around from there.

I will be at the Crown Plaza Hotel 7230 Engle Road, Middleberg Heights

I am a totally addicted player, who started late in life, with about 2 years of experience, an 8' antique Brunswick Madison table on which I practice daily, & a graduate of Stan Shuffett's course.

Let me look and ask around,I know they have some pretty good spots out that way for pool players, sometimes I think they even have some tourneys (bar box I believe)on Sundays, nothing serious, you can probably get some games for a beer side bet. Will let you know what I come up with.If I'm off that day will try to meet you out that way and we'll hit a few!!

Pool in the Cleveland area is a 1 or 2 on a scale from 1-10 in popularity... There are a couple places not too far from you (River City in Fairview Park and Big Daddy's Billiards in North Ridgeville), but its very unlikely that you'd get a game since they average maybe 10 people a week (I'm exaggerating a bit, but its pretty dead).

On the days you said you'd be out I don't think there are any tournaments going on, you're either one day too soon or one day too late, unless there are tournaments on Saturday's at Classic Billiards (that's Joe's place, right??).

Try either Wickliffe Lanes, River City Billiards, or Big Daddy's Billiards. If you're open to drive an hour check out Fiddlesticks in Canton.

Wickliffe lanes does have a 9 ball tourney on tuesday nights, but Its gotta
be close to an hour away from Middleburg Heights. Theres alos BJ's
Diamond mine on Lorain Blvd. All Diamond tables by the way.
L & L Billards on Turney has a 10 ball ring game on thursday nights too.

My buddy just bought everything from BJs (Wally @ River City).. They're turning it into a night club. One down and 2 to go on the west side :(

Just to give you an idea of what's going on here (I've had a couple tonight so I'm more talkative than usual)... Unemployment is approaching 30% in my agegroup and much of the police force and fire have been laid off. Downtown is like the night of the living homeless... You're entering a highly depressed city... This is a disgusting area lol, but we've got cheap taxes and cheap beer! Stick to the places we've mentioned and you'll be okay (no muggings).

Amen Amen and Amen, this is one of the most depressing cities in America, and if you saw the news today,we're #7 as far as food related sicknesses in the country and their talking more police layoffs, sheesh it never ends in this town, now as far as Fiddlestix that's where my coach teaches. He was certified by Tom Simpson in Columbus (pool school),Jim Looman,he's a great guy and will shoot around with you just for fun.The other places I've gone to but never shot in their tourneys, but if you stick to the main ones we've all named here you'll be safe and have a good time.

Evidently a lot has changed since I left the city back in 1999.

Let me ask you a few questions. You seem fairly knowledgable on the pool rooms around the area.

What about the plush pool rooms (I believe there was 2...Jansco's?) One downtown, one Shaker Heights area?

How about Sharky's Forget now exactly where that was. Not too bad an area.

Rack and roll or something like that around Mentor area.

There was one in Brooklyn that Ralph Carnes was the house pro.

Carousel Bowling alley of Pearl Road. Had tournaments and I believe 12 GC. Nice area.

Northfield Billiards off route 8

Action Billiards in Tallmadge. Doc someones place.

Chandley's in North Olmsted

The old Starchers in Akron. I think they changed the name to Action also.

Diamonds Billiards around the Barberton area.

Chagrin Valley Billiards in Bainbridge

Ambassador Bowling alley around Route 8 and I480 in Bedford

Appreciate any input. Thanks

WOW that's a big list! To start off I haven't really ventured into bowling alley rooms. After checking out buckeye lanes in North Olmsted I generally stay away (the cloth is like wool... decent tables but you have to hammer the cue ball).

The only two that stick out that I know for sure about is Northfield and Chandley's. Northfield closed back in like 04 I think (long before I even thought about playing pool), and Chandley's was bought by Kirk Smith maybe 5-6 years ago and changed the name to Big Daddy's Billiards, and as of March 1st Mike Something (we just call him Limo Mike) took over and is bringing it back to 24 hours where Justin Daniels (of Youngstown) is the official house pro.

I've been in the process of developing a website for the players and locations since 08... I'll know much more when I begin going through my list of 100ish locations I threw together. Actually, when its all done I hope to know everything about whats going on in our state as far as pool goes, and so can anyone else who has any interest.

1) Jansco-Closed,nothing in shaker
2) Sharkies-South Euclid,Monticello/Wilson Mills rd. & Green rd. closed
3) Rock & Roll-also called Club 9- closed, pool tables sold to Franks' billiards opened in Wickliffe across from Wickliffe bowling closed about 1 year later (2007-08 ish).
4) Carousel Bowling-Brooklyn closed
5) North field Billiards-got a lot of heavy weight action, lots of road players, idiots got super greedy shot table prices up from 5/hr to 25/hr,went bust and then refused to sell the prime location to anyone(selfishness),now it's a Dollar General store.
6) Action Billiards-never get down to Tallmadge/akron area, never hear of any action down there.
7) Chandleys-No action out that way.
8) Starchers-bar room pool-drunk kids,21-30 crowd, sausage feast city. Also one in Eastlake on Vine St.,called Skorchers(HillBillie Heaven-if you like your women with no teeth).
9) Diamond Billiards-?
10) Chagin Valley- nothing out that way, just local bars a very few,but lots of cops watching your car.DUI city.
11) Ambassador-Northfield & Rockside rd. closed and sold ,now a Getgo gas station(7-11 with gas and car wash).Staff went to work at Freeway lanes (old palisades-I-271 and Euclid-wickliffe) then all fired.(That's where I practice).

> It pains me to have to say this, but Starcher's/Doc's is a forklift rental agency as of 4 years ago this past December.

I ran into Chico Minson at Gold Crown Billiards on Manchester Road in Akron the last time I was up there and he said the guy that was leasing it from Dottie (owned another room too) ran both of them into the ground and was was behind on his note,so her son Jim changed the locks on the place and closed it up. Some of the tables were bought by individuals, and some were sold to a room in Cincy.

Back when I used to visit the place on vacations, tough action at just about all price points could be had 24-7. Imagine 20 players Troy Frank's speed (or better) in the same room, night after night. Tommy D.

Hey Ben, not sure about the others, but #3 is off a bit. Rack-n-roll Billiards
and Club-9 were 2 different rooms, and I believe were open at the same
time for a bit. Maybe a year or so. Rack-n-Roll was in mentor close to the
Painesville boder just east of Heisley road. Its now a Winking Lizard bar.
Club 9 was just west of the Great Lakes Mall behind the Wendys. Now
Frank never bought either rooms Tables. He still has the Gandy Big G's that
he always had. He just moved them alot. LOL. Club 9 had Olhausens I
believe, and I'm not sure what Rack-n-Roll had, but they werent Gandy's
to the best of my knowledge. Now you also said that you practice out of
the Freeway Lanes? Are you talking about the huge one on Euclid Ave right
behind the McDonalds and Ford dealership? I could have sworn that they
closed the pool room down, and just tossed some Video games in there.
So please just confirm that they have pool tables. I'm curious.
Thanks, Dom.

our thursday night tap league, and I wonder where they
moved to.
