Pool in Thailand?

Thailand Pool

I've been to Thailand about 10 times in the last 4 years. But, I never went for playing with pool balls.

Except for those nice pool hall places, most places play 8-ball, you pay about 20 baht a game which is about 55 cents I think. An employee will usually rack for you. They have a rule if you scratch or don't touch your ball your opponent will get 2 turns. So your opponent shoots until he misses, then he gets another turn, unless he fouls too. The ball in hand is in the kitchen. Some places have bad tables, and some places have decent or good tables. Most tables do appear to be 9 footers though. The only place I seen nice tables was in Pattaya, I can't remember the name, I guess it is the places others have mentioned. It has nice tables and non-bar like atmosphere to play pool. I think they have tournaments there too. Oh.... in Bangkok a decent place to play and meet ladies is Gulliver's.

Last year I was in Pattaya playing at a beer bar off of Walking street in Pattaya (google.. Pattaya Walking Street), some guys wanted to play for money. I already suspected they try to make money off some sorry drunk foreigners (farangs). I didn't care if I lost 10 bucks or so, so I played to see what his skills were like. We played for 100 baht a game, almost 3 dollars a game. He wasn't too happy when he lost about 7 games in a row, I guess he found out I wasn't the typical drunk foreigner. I was just drunk a little bit.. haha. He finally won a game, but he did the double or nothing trick until he won, then I told him I don't want to play anymore. I didn't want to take his money anyways, he had a few buddies there that play for money too, and they looked like they would try to kick my ass somewhere if I left with his money. After this he wanted to play some more for just fun, no money and said I was good. I was relieved to see they didn't want to kick my ass, they looked like they knew some Muay Thai.

If you go there and want to play some pool, I'd be afraid to bring a nice cue with you, it might disappear, plus it's usually hot and humid there. Other than that, Thailand is a great place for vacation and pretty safe.

Cues are pretty safe in Thailand. I've been offered $15K US for my cue, and I've been drunk and left it in Bangkok bars more times than I can count. Its always there the next day.

The nice room you went to in Pattaya was probably Megabreak.

Decent places like Hustler's have free lockers for your cue, and all the rooms are air-conditioned so heat and humidity aren't a big concern (though I probably wouldn't carry my cue around to the bar-girl dives if I was just out for a night of drinking with some pool mixed in).

Hmmm.. yeah, half of the places I play pool in Thailand are open air with no A/C and plenty of female players and loud music, and I'm not too serious about winning. I might live in Thailand in about 4 years, that's when I'll take my cues. I usually hop around too much anyways. Mt trip last year took me to the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, back to Thailand, Laos, and back to Thailand again. Hmm... of all the places I didn't play any pool was in the Philippines. I'll have to see where the great Filipino players play at next time. I won't wager any money on myself however.

Has anyone been over there and been to the pool halls. I hear they have quite a few and I'm wondering if there's any action/gambling. Were there many good players and, if so, how well did they play?

Thanks in advance...

a friend of mine just got back from thailand. he said there was a pool hall right next to the whore house..........

I feel pity on people like you:o:o:o I feel equally pity on the whores who have to sell their bodies to feed themselves and their families.

what a pathetic comment to make:mad::mad::mad:

Thailand is a beautiful place with equally beautifull people, not just from their faces but also minds. Where in the world there are no whore houses.

The standard of pool halls in thailand is very good, there might be few of them but are all good. There are numerous azers who have been here and will come here, and everyone will enjoy here.
I am not a Thai but i love thailand, and thai hospitality.
Good and bad people are everywhere in the world.

come on man, lighten up, it was just a joke. i've seen some pics of thailand and it does look beautiful.

all my friends call thailand the modern day sodom. i realize that there's more to the country than cheap vacation spots and whores i just thought i'd make a slightly subtle joke

ps whores aren't bad people

Pool is cool in Thailand

There is a lot of pool in Bangkok and Pattaya. Almost everyone gambles (mostly cheap), and there are some very good players. The best rooms are the Ball In Hand I on Sukumvit soi 4, the Ball in Hand II at Times Square Asok, and the Megabreak Lounge in Pattaya. There is also the Red Parrot above Patpong, and a new room is opening at RCA Plaza. There are tournaments somewhere almost every day of the week.

Many good players show up on vacation there. Max Eberle and Mike Massey have come to the Ball in Hand I. I played Quentin Hann at the Paradise (now closed.) All the top Asian players came to Bangkok this summer for a San Miguel Tour tournament. I heard there was a party for the players at Ball in Hand II.

It is the best place in the world for a pool playing vacation.

Hi Cuaba!
Yeah, pool in Bankok is a lot of fun. I did not get big action but did make about $100 (Dollars) a day. Glad to see more places are opening up there. I do plan to go back asap and with Cuaba showing me some new places it will be a blast. Hope to be in PI too for the worlds...

Hey Max,
You remember Timo? He's the guy who brought you to Bangkok from the Philippines a few years ago. He lives in Bangkok full time now, and he owns a piece of Shooters, a pool room at RCA Plaza.

He told me to say hi next time I saw you. And he looks forward to your return.

I agree. I have been to almost 50 countries. And Thailand is where I want to retire and live, hopefully in about 4 years. Thai people are some of the friendliest and fun loving people I have seen. I have never seen people that like to joke around so much. Also if you ask what they want to do, they will say up to you. If you do something that might make them mad, they will say, it's OK, no problem. Plus yes, things are cheaper there. I have never been anywhere, where the people love their King so much. They don't fear, dred or hate the King, and they aren't brainwashed to love him, they really love their King. I have never seen something like that anywhere. In Cambodia I have met people just as friendly or more friendly, but they don't joke around as much and Cambodia isn't modern like Thailand. Plus, Thai food is awesome.

Yes, there are many working ladies there if you choose to do that. I have had many many great times with ladies just by being nice, buying dinner, drinks, dancing, and without much question go back to your hotel for a shag. They also love it if you say you will travel to somewhere else and offer to take them.

Some areas have very poor people, but I am never afraid someone will rob or kill me either. The worst you will see, is there are a few bad people that will try to pick your pocket, and that's rare. You won't see someone in a small town try that.

The worst thing that ever happened to me there, is me and my friends bought some belts and wallets, supposedly made of elephant leather from a guy walking around the streets in Pattaya. He didn't lie, but he made it seem more valuable than what it was, he dropped the price about 50%.
Well the next day I seen the same products in the mall much cheaper than we paid for it. So he sold it to us for more, which you can say is a fair business practice, but he didn't rob or steal our money.

I've been around the world and Thailand is my favorite place. I'm not ready to retire and live there full time, but business allows me to live there about 1/3 of the year now.

The worst thing that has ever happened there was when a couple kids selling flowers pickpocketed my cell phone. I was due for a new one anyway, but I hated losing all my numbers.

Yeah, I was going to say the little kids selling things pick pockets and also the ladyboys. I didn't know the kids would pick your pockets until one grabbed on to my leg and wouldn't let go, well, I kept walking down the street with the little girl hanging around my leg. Some ladyboys grabbed her and said something to her, then the ladyboys said to be careful, the kids will steal things in my pockets. For the rest of the week I had more kids hang all over me, and sometimes ladyboys grab you like they are grabbing your "pool stick" and grabbing your ass, but they are really trying to pick your pockets.

Any AZer's all always welcome at my resort on Koh Samui- just shoot me a PM if you're going to be in the neighborhood.

Sounds Like Soi 4 In Front Of Nana Plaza

The kids who got my phone grabbed on to both legs & wouldn't let go. You don't want to be too forcefull with kids, but you gotta do something.

In July I took a first timer. He got pickpocketed by a ladyboy within hours of getting off the plane.

No place is perfect, but in Thailand the good definitely outweighs the bad.

thailand is great

its been almost 3 weeks since I have arrived in bangkok. Ive been so busy settling in at work and in my new apartment that I havent had anytime to play except for last night my gf and I went down to suhkumvit road and stoped in at Hustlers in Time Square plaza for a quick drink and a few games.
I have to say I was really impressed by the room. we played on a really nice metro table, the food and drinks were good, all the equipment was in very good condition and the service was friendly and prompt. Table time was resonable and I have never had a table maid rack my balls for me after each game!
After last night I am itching to join a league and play some tournaments asap!

I was wondering where to buy a cue though? I decided to not bring one with me, since I already had a lot of luggage. I saw that Hustlers sells a few cues in the entry way, but I was wondering if any AZ locals here knew about a better place to aquire a good playing cue for not that much.

Any help of suggestions are appreciated. thanks guys

Haha, I think the same thing every time I am in Pattaya and some guy has his wife or girlfriend with him, and you know he wants to go out by himself. I am part of another website, and guys ask about how they can get away from their wives for awhile to go have some fun.

Hopefully it's his Thai girlfriend, then I can understand.

I've got a decent cue collection in Thailand- I bought all of them from the States and had them sent USPS Priority Mail (~$35-$40 per cue)- I haven't had a problem (yet- crossing fingers:wink:).

You'll definitely save money buying this way as the local cues are on the expensive side (there are also many cues for sale at Ball In Hand off Soi 4- this is a nice room and you should check it out).

I'm in NY at the moment, but I'll be back in Thailand (Koh Samui) next Tuesday- you can give me a call at 081-787-6354 if you need any info- I'll be happy to help you out.

Cheers,
