Len Wesson was called Peter Gunn, a notorious undercover player of the 60's, 70's and 80's. He was a rugged looking black man who grew up in Bakersfield, CA at the same time as Bakersfield Bobby Hernandez. They battled throughout their youth and made each other stronger players. Both were tough guys who could handle themselves in a scrap.
I played both of them in my poolroom in the 70's. I held my own with Bobby and could never beat Peter at any game. Bobby was one of the best in the country on a bar table with a big ball. He ran around with Jr. Rogers at times and they were an unbeatable pair. Bobby grew up working the fields of the San Joaquin Valley and was hard as nails.
Peter was a star Fullback on his high school team and was a soft spoken but imposing looking man at 6' and 220 of rock hard muscle. He made his living from pool all his life, playing good players wherever he could find them. He didn't hustle anyone. He would just flat beat you. He once beat Tacoma Whitey out of 60k over a few days and Whitey threatened him and showed a gun. Peter refused to give up the money even with the gun and a couple of guys with Whitey. He just said come and get it or get out of my way. He backed them all down. He was a bad MF'er if angered.
Bobby was best friends with Judd Fuller, the great cue maker. He is still alive, living in Arizona. Peter got MS and passed away about ten years ago. Both were and are best friends of mine for life!
