Pool on TV Alert: 2014 Women's Tournament of Champions

Allison needs to take a time out after sinking the 6 with the miscue, still getting shape on the 7 and miraculously avoiding the scratch after sinking the 8 and colliding with the 9, and go buy a lottery ticket.

Pocket Size

The pockets look larger than normal on the Diamond table they are playing on...or is it just me. The women usually played on tighter pockets in ESPN events.

I suppose, but then it seems a single race to 7 would be better.

I imagine the format of 2 races to 4 + possible tiebreaker is thought to have more potential for drama on TV. However, it can also result in the winner of the match winning fewer games than the loser of the match.

In this event, only one of the three matches went to the tiebreaker and, coincidentally, it would have gone hill/hill if the games had been won in the same manner in a single race to 7 (4-2, 2-4, 1-0 for Kelly Fisher).

Unfortunately, a race to 7 often would not, and the current format does not, allow us to see the whole match in an hour with all the commercials and "tips" and background talking that is done. This event consisted of only 37 games in total (whereas the event has a potential for 45 games). Yet 4 games of the 37 were entirely edited out and 6 games were shown only in part.

ESPN does a fine job with the actual production (depending on how you feel about the commentators), but it is frustrating to not be able to see the full match.

Here are some break stats for this International Tournament of Champions, based on what was shown on ESPN2 or what could be deduced for the 37 games played in the event:

• Breaker made at least one ball without fouling: 19 of 30 (63%)

• Breaker won the game: 16 of 35 (46%)

• Break-and-run games: 7 of 33 (21%). [If none of the 4 games entirely edited out were B&R's, then 7 of 37 (19%)]

The conditions for this event included: Diamond 9' table with blue Simonis cloth and what looked to be larger-than-pro-cut pockets, Aramith Tournament balls, measles cue ball, Delta-13 Elite rack, jump sticks allowed, Tournament Director racks, alternating breaks from anywhere behind the line, shot clock of unstated length, and all slop counts except the 9-ball must be called.
