Hi@all,

Photography is my second hobby, so why not mix both ?

I shot some photos @ tournaments and want to get some feedback from poolplayers (maybe also improvement hints)

I like the pictures. Thanks for sharing! :smile:

I am not a camera buff, so I cannot offer advice. :o

Is that the Hungarian pool player named Vilmos Foldes in the red shirt?

great photos markus! very interesting acting with the depth of field! and you also caught the mood very well - i like it a lot! :thumbup:

Is that the poolhall that opened about 1,5 year ago? Never been there, but saw some pictures after Jasmin was there on the opening party.

She says it is one of the nicest poolhalls she's ever been to.

@SP

Thanks ;-)

@ the DCC I will do a photoblog, so there will come a lot more pictures.

@Roy

Hmmm, I'm not sure to be honest, but its still one of the nicest poolhalls I ever played.

How long will you stay in Muenchen ?
Will you celebrate you birthday in Germany ?
We will celebrate my birthday and New Year's Day at home with some friends.
So if you are still in Germany, you and Kelly are very welcome to celebrate with us. Just let me know ....

I will call you by Dec. 16.

Sorry, no Vegas this year, but I'm sure we will see us @ DCC.

If you wish to improve you Pool Photo I will make (2) suggestions.

1. Look at the photos posted by Forum Member Rick S. He is a
Pool Photographer, that has posted many links to his images on this forum.

2. Look at the photos published in pool, and billiards magazine where you live.

Study both resources, and copy their style of photography. That is what I did when I start in photojournalism, each monday I was at the local news stand looking at time, Newsweek, and U.S. World Report. Next thing I knew I had a portfolio to get me with a good photo news agency, and for 115 years was very busy, until much of the news biz changed.

PM Me if you got questions.

You are off to a good start! I am sure you have noticed how hard it is to get "different" pics, since players go through the same routines more or less every shot. Then of course, the low light, no flash allowed, and often mixed light source (ie Kelvin), make for a challenge, no?

I am getting my best results with new Nikon D300 camera, which is good in low light (I often use iso 1600), along with a heavy old f2.8 80-200 zoom. The big glass and excellent auto focus on that old lens are a big help!

here is one of my favorites from last summer's Turning Stone tournament:

@CC

Thanks for the suggestions, I found a lot of pics from Rick S.
Sadly there are no pictures published here (no magazines and often mobile phone pictures or pictures taken with flash) But in the www I found a lot of....

@1pocket

wow, what a great picture !!!

I use a Canon 40D (ISO 800 is fine 1600 also OK, but not as good as the D300)
I use a f4.0 24-105mm IS USM lens and now a f1.4 50mm (you have to try the new Sigma, its quite sharp @ 1.4) lens with a monopod. I tried to use depth of field to get different pictures situations (So i can use ISO 200 to 400 with f1.4 to 2.0)

What shutter speeds do you use ? I prefer 1/100 to get sharp pictures, but sometimes 1/60 is also OK .....

Did you ever had problems with your shutter sound ? I was thinking about a noise canceling housing . You ever tried one like this ?

I think pros will not mention the sound, but some of the "normal" players had problems with it.

Thanks for sharing your gallerys and I hope we will see us @ the DCC

The sound hasn't been such an issue at the bigger tournaments, at least with the longer lens -- assuming I am shooting from back in a standard photographer zone. I worry about the movement when I am directly in the line of sight, too. I try not to move if the player is shooting down the barrel of the camera, and in fact I try to pull the trigger on the camera either way before they might pull the trigger on the shot, or just after, out of respect, if I am directly in their line of sight. I try to use at least 1/100 shutter, and monopod support.
