I started a thread on the pool room owners discussion board and wanted to hear some players feedback. If your local pool hall has a great promotion/ coupon/ special etc that you think is unique and encourages pool play...lets hear it. What is your opinion of "punch cards"?? Play a certain number of hours..get the card punched...get free pool. That sort of thing? Do you actually use coupons out of the paper? What special keeps you coming back to your favorite pool hall? Good input will help owners and players alike so lets hear your ideas! Thanks!

:)

2 for Tuesdays where the food and softdrinks are half priced as well as the table time (this one works best with a place that serves alcohol, the food and time brings people in and you make it up plus some on beer etc). Punchcards are always popular, where you punch each hour played at full price and after 10 or so the player gets free time. Then you can have the players sign the full cards and put them in a fishbowl for a drawing at the end of the month for prizes (tip scuffers, promo t shirts, more table time etc stuff that doesnt cost you much)

Have a pro player spend the afternoon. Set up a challenge table. Players beating the pro could get a coupon for a free drink/discount drink/free hour of pool/discounted pool rate.

Each month you could give each player a punch card. Every player who turns in a full card would be placed in a drawing. The winner could get free pool for a month, or a nice pool related item. If a player can fill more than one card in a month, then he would have a better chance of winning.

Arizonas in Toronto uses to have free pool AND snooker all the time c e AND half price appetizers mid afternoon.

Only catch, the playing equipment was ghastly but still a great place to cut your teeth.

Free

FREE is a bad four letter word to poolroom owners. Watch your mouth!:)

One pool hall in town offers free pool to senoirs during the day if they buy a coffee or soda. My regular hall sends an e-mail newsletter out every couple weeks that includes a coupon for 1 hour of pool, and they have flat rate $10 all day and night pool for various groups on certain nights. I think college students are tues, hospitality on thurs, auto industry on sun etc. I wish we had some of the specials posted above around here. I might have to wait until I am a senior citizen to catch a break on table time. LOL

Terry Stonier at Jointed Cue Billiards, every year, would do a 4-6 week monday night pool lesson/ lecture. The bandstands would be full and people would be standing on the sidelines. Just one hour- the first lesson: stance, aim, center cue ball; all the way up to throw, squirt, aiming for spots outside of the pool table. Sometimes there would be a guest speaker (first time I ever saw Grady). So the free lecture would last an hour, and it would get all of the B, C, D players totally amped to run and get a table to practice what they'd just learnt.

Hard Times in Sac has Monday night Ladies night, where btwn such and such hours, unaccompanied ladies play free. Gets the guys in there just to watch, gets the girls dressing up to be seen on a Monday night. And it gets the girls who care about pool some free practice time.

Club 8 in Amsterdam has a table reserved for action. No table time charged at all- but you have to be gambling. Sounds like a waste of money, but it gets everyone playing each other- minimum 2 euros per game, but short matches for larger sums are accepted. That sort of forced exposure to other players makes them really rent the other tables for practice to hit up the challenge table again.

I have used the above and coupons, monthly memberships, and stamped cards for free hours earned. All are very much appreciated. I think the one I miss most is the Stonier one. Can't explain how hyped and excited you felt after a lecture- that feeling lasted all week until the next one.

oh yeah- Riley's in London (Belgravia) forces you to buy a year's membership just to be in there (guests are allowed in until 11pm for 5 pounds sterling when accompanied by a member), but when you sign up, you get 20 pounds worth of vouchers- like buy one hour, get the 2nd for 1 pence (2 cents). If you buy some super premium membership, you get a cheapie cue and soft case.

Most owners understand some things need to be free in order to bring in business or as reward for valued business. Free isnt as bad a four letter word as "OWE" as in..."You OWE me free pool time for being such a wonderful customer and you "OWE" me a discount. That will get on a owners nerves pretty quick. Promotions and loss leaders have always been part of successful businesses.

Cue-Phoria in River Grove, IL, has free pool every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, from opening til close. All they ask is you buy two drinks, or something similar. Drinks can be tea, soft drinks etc. They have specials on beer, and other drinks too. Plus on Thursdays if you show up wearing a hawaiian shirt or something floral, pool's free.

Guess what? They're chock full in the evenings. Speaking with one of the managers, they're doing just fine with this setup.

Works for me.

Here in Japan, the majority of places have a 'free time' discount which amounts to some form of all you can play. Most generally, 1,000 yen (about $8.50) gets you all you can play from 12-5 on weekdays. They also have punch cards or stamp cards that when full result in an extra hours free time or some kind of billiard goods.
I've always wondered if any halls/clubs have a monthly membership rate like sports clubs do. For a predetermined monthly rate, you're entitled to use all facilities with some kind of a discount on food, drinks, and other goods. I know that for me personally, it would be nice to know that my table time is paid so I don't have to worry about how much cash I have on hand everytime I go to shoot pool.

Walk in rate and a membership rate.

"Members" can be encouraged to bring friends in at thier "special" rate.

Free

Most of the pool halls in my town have free pool from 11am -4pm and a couple have 11am-7pm. The catch is you have to have a purchase every hour. Meaning a drink, food, or something.

I think it is a great idea cause those are the hours that they are not busy.

One pool room here has free pool on Sunday all day if you wear their shirt. Well their shirt is like $30 so to me it was worth it to play all day for free.

When I was in Korea every place I played was free, they knew if you were playing pool for free you would buy more booze. So they made a killing on alcohol.

Perfect, Tracy!

Of course, my favorite discount is when I tip the bartender handsomely and she tears up my tab and time sheet.

So you tip the cute bartender and she steals from the room owner.
NICE!

When I was 16 I use to always go to Cues2 becuase they had Free Pool with Lunch. I would go when my Government school had a day off. I'd wake up at 10am and leave because they opened around 11am. I believe the special ran from open to 4pm. I'd order a basket of chicken tenders and play the whole time by myself.

I believe they still do that along with "The Pool Room" in Duluth. I also know of a few other bar/poolhalls that do that. They just set the balls on the table during the lunch period and let people play.

I also like the half off if you are by yourself. Which is how I play the most.

Other DREAM suggestions...
Free Drinks if you don't smoke. Free Cigarettes if you don't drink. Free Pool Time if you do neither. (This would be an interesting social experiment)
