Pool, Poker and Pain, and in that order!

Well, I'm on some e-mail list and just discovered that this Blair Thein dude from Florida has actually effected his concept of Pool, Poker and Pain. Bravo to him! :)

"Pool, Poker and Pain," with the backing of Simonis, Brand in Entertainment, and anybody who desires to be a sponsor pre-launch, is looking mighty sporty [pun intended]. :grin-square:

I wonder, though, what it would be like if they changed the order of events to Pain, Poker, and Pool. By the looks of some of these contestants, I don't think the pool players have to like it. Yikes! :o

I know Tony Crosby and Dennis Hatch are excellent pool players, but I am not very familiar with the other names: Cesar Infantas, Romeo Brown, Tommy Hernandez, Jesse Piercey, Danny Smith, Vance Miles, Adam Kanard, George Payne, Bjoern Lepke, Daniel Louge, Rob Wetherhold, and Damian Mancini. In fact, they look a little rough and tough. I wouldn't want to cross them, that's for sure.

The video promo is excellent. Joey K is conversing through the window of Hatchet Man's car, which for some reason put a smile on my face. Dennis Hatch is funny. :p

Jerry Slivka is, well, Jerry Slivka. He hasn't changed much as far as emotional expression, but he's always up for the challenge. And it's the Jerry Slivkas of the world you have to watch out for, the silent type. ;)

Tony Crosby was charming, as usual, with that British acccent, explaining he's got courage to get in the ring, remembering him coming out on top of some Irish blokes when he was 8 years old. Oh, Tony, please protect those sweet baby blues! :duck:

Rodney Morris is the pool coach, which is a good choice. Gee, that picture of Rodney on their website sure does look familiar. :D

Poker is already a huge hit with mainstream media. I have been involved in MMA sports with my job in recent times, and I must say, it is addicting. They say timing is everything, and I think Blair Thein's timing is perfect. I wish him the best of luck on this venture. It's been a long time in the making, and it's now a reality.

Check out the video on the website. I loved it. Click here:Pool, Poker and Pain Website

Is this the change agent that pool needs to effect a change for the better? Time will tell, but I'm pulling for this to be a success.

Will a pool player come out on top, or will it a poker player or an MMA fighter? Needless to say, may the best pool player win, and if he's American, that's even better!

Let's get ready to rumble. Rack 'em, Sausage!

On the website, it says Rodney Morris is going to be the coach for POO, Poker, and Pain.

Poo? :o

Hmm, that does conjure up some visions.

Okay, okay. I know it's a typo, but it was a funny typo.

Here's a great shot of two of my favorite players born on the other side of the pond: Brian Saleh on the left and Tony Crosby on the right.

They sure do look dapper in this pic! :)

I have many Hatch pictures, but they are on my other computer and not handy.

Here's a great shot of Dennis Hatch on the left, all dressed up and ready to play some pool. In fact, I'll bet he's playing pool in the same place right now at the time of this writing. Why, Turning Stone Casino, of course at the Joss event.

This picture was taken in 2006.

Although Jerry Slivka was in the promo video, I did not see his name on the list of contestants.

Here's a great shot of Jerry Slivka on the left with my friend, Frankie, from Joysee! :)

I hope Triple-P gets a good theme song. The M-1 Challenge song scares me, every single time I hear it. And I know it by heart now, which is also scary! :o

Here it is: M-1 Challenge Theme Song

Gonna raise my fist, gonna raise my fist, gonna raise my fist LIKE THIS!

I know Blair has been working on this for a long time. I think it is just the thing to interest young people today. In my poolroom we lost many a poolplayer to poker and I know the younger folks are into the ultimate fighting so I think he just might have a winner here. Will I watch it...I guess. But I'm pretty sure I'm not the demographic!

I'm going to talk to Efren about getting Manny Pacquiao to be our horse. :D We may need him to take a few lessons on poker. He's got enough pool savvy to get there and even the big oak trees don't have to like his ripping jabs. Poker is nothing but luck so he probably won't need any luck for that either. :p:wink:

Excellent idea, JoeyA! In fact, he's a shoe-in. We already know he plays pool.

One thing that puzzles me, though, is the thought of a player Manny's size getting in the ring with, say, somebody Dennis Hatch's size. In MMA, they do have weight categories, i.e., lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight.

They do have a pool coach, a poker coach, and an MMA coach for the contestants, but I do wonder how a lightweight or welterweight would do against a heavyweight. In pool and poker, the size of the person doesn't matter.

Manny is an excellent choice, but last time I read, he's running for public office in Philippines a la Jesse Ventura, I guess. :)

This is gonna make a fortune. I'm pumped just thinking about it.

I wonder what would happen if Hatch got someone in a full mount?? Sheesh

Yes JAM, they do have weight classes in MMA.

Jam knows they have weight classes in mma, she's asking does this show have weight classes, which is a great question.

Yep, I sure do. I think I know more about MMA today than I'd like to know. LOL!

It really is. Have you seen the pictures of some of those contestants?

Actually, Dennis Hatch looks like he's the biggest contestant.

A friend of mine told me that he was in the foreign legion or some such outfit in Spain. He's from Spain originally.

At one of the ports he arrived at, there was a ring set up for fights. In the middle of the ring was an orangutan. Anybody who could stay in the ring 5 minutes with the orangutan would win $500, I think it was, but it would cost you 10 bucks per try.

Orangutans have long arms, and so they would have a decided advantage on the reach as compared to humans.

He said he paid his 10 bucks. As soon the the bell rang, he ran over to the orangutan and kicked him as hard as he could in his -- ahem -- groin area, for lack of a better word. The poor organutan knelt over in pain, and my friend won the $500.

I don't know if this is a true story or not, but he swears it happened. :o

Anyway, size does matter, I think, in MMA. I wonder how, say, Pacman would do in the ring with Dennis Hatch. Would the training and experience of Pacman win over Dennis Hatch's size, or would Dennis Hatch be able to take on Pacman with no problem?

I can't say who would win in a fight between manny or Dennis. Generally, the rule of thumb is that the trained fighter wins, especially if he's worldclass.

Up until very recently, (early 90's I think), there were no weight classes in MMA. The ufc was like that when itstarted too. I can remember watchingthe Gracies taking on men up to 100 pounds bigger than them.

All elite athletes in physical sports, whether it be wrestling (not pro junk), boxing or MMA and individual components (karate, jui jitsu etc), REGULARLY fight and spar in training, with little or no regard for any size differences.

IMO, there aren't any pool players that can beat a classicaly trained fighter. Furthermore, anyone knowing little more than the basics, can win at poker. As for pool, unless it's some ridiculous game like 3 ball, no one will be able to beat the pool players on the green.

I think what decides these games is how well the pool players and fighters do playing poker.

This could be very exciting

There will be weight classes in PPP. In an Inside Pool interview on PPP's website under videos, Rachel Abbink asks Blair @ that. Blair said that Dennis was currently at 225#'s and had to drop to 205. Blair said he had to get up to 185 to make that weight class.

So, we won't see Manny taking on a 240# ripped cheeseburger anytime soon!

Here's the format from what I saw on their site: Best of 3, bang bang bang.

- It's a heads up set of seven ball, race to 7
- Then quickly to the poker table for heads up Texas Holdem for the pot
- Then off to the Circle of Truth for some blood and guts, 3 rounds

PPP is pegging this as an annual event. Hatch vs Blair is supposedly a done deal matchup. I wonder how all the other matchups will be determined and if it's double elimination. :grin-square:

I can't wait to see this crazy azz competition. I think it will be exciting as hell! Go Blair - Gitter Done!

I think Dennis used to box when he was much younger. In fact, I am pretty sure I heard this from my boyfriend, as they went on the road together many moons ago and shared quite a few stories, some of which are quite funny when it comes to the "longshoremen," but that's the topic for another thread.

So Hatch does have a wee bit of background in boxing, but MMA is a combination of multiple disciplines. Boxing only ain't gonna cut the mustard when you're up against somebody with a combination of MMA skills, like Muay Thai, Sambo, Jiu-Jitsu, Kimura, BJJ, et cetera.

I mean, if I saw this guy on the other side of the ring, I think I would have a bladder problem. The heck with the tournament. I like pool and poker, but the pain part is really going to be an eye-opener. I mean, look at this dude. How would you like to be in the ring with him?! I'd run as fast as my legs would take me outta there. He wins. :o

I'm calling my big brother

LMAO JAM. Bladder problem indeed!

Hey, my big brother ran a 5 pack on me yesterday. His poker face needs some work, but I'm thinking he'll do quite well in the pain department.
