Pool Room Music

What's up AZB! I wanted to get some thoughts on what people think the best kind of pool room music is. Being a little old school, I prefer blues and classic rock, but recently I find myself enjoying some of the rap and hip-hop that has been coming out of the local TouchTunes. Obviously a lot of the opinions will be based on personal preference, but I feel like certain environments benefit more from specific types of music. What type of music works best in the wild environment of the pool hall? To those of you with home tables,do you listen to music when playing at home? What kinds of music DON'T work at the pool hall? How many of you just put in the headphones?

As long as the volume isn't set to 11, I don't care what it is.

Gentle background music, even the most obnoxious, is better than silence.

If the environment it wild, I'm leaving.

I'd pay to have the music shut off.

I hate jukebox's... .I keep my BT headphones close.
I know more than one person who will intentionally play $5 or more worth of garbage music just to screw with other players.

If your a rhythm player, your game can absolutely change based on the music being played, especially if it's too loud.
I like what I like. I shouldn't have to listen to headbanging or classical, or whatever music when trying to get in stroke. I enjoy playing and listening to lots of different music, but when I shoot that list is VERY narrow.

rap is very off putting in a pool hall for me
I might try headphones some time

I dont like it at all but hick-hop is just above rap and its just barley tolerable
rap though just puts me in a mood to leave

I like country(real country music)
soft rock
hard rock to metal

My room has classic rock going at a nice level however they do have an internet jukebox and the volume goes way up when it kicks on. Much much louder than the fm rock station. It definitely gets my attention but I forget about it pretty fast.

I've been the guy on the sour end of this. I like to listen to Rock & Metal. It fires me up. When I'm playing well, my buddies would hit the Jukebox and play Pop, Country, Rap, etc.. Anything to break my concentration.

Interesting subject, I really never understood this. I've watched numerous streams of varying tournaments and such over the years, some being called State Championships & such and here are 2 people battling it out in the final & invariably there is a loud jukebox in the background blaring out whatever selections someone with a few bucks picked.

I understand some people have different motivations for playing, some social, some seriously. I've just never understood how a game that requires such serious levels of concentration is always accompanied by a loud jukebox which by its very nature flys in the face of concentration.

I'm not a fan of it while playing but if you want to gamble you're seldom going to find a hall or place to play without it so I've just learned to tune it out over the years.

I'll have to agree on the juke box problem. If someone walks up with five bucks and selects "the Macarena" and "who let the dogs out" to play on an endless loop, there can be problems.

From the books that I have read, pool excellence is rhythmic machine, in terms of pacing, stroke mechanics, and intense focus on exact details.

Therefore, I make sure to load the mp3 player up with synthesized movie scores and electro EBM music from Europe. (Tangerine Dream, vnv nation, covenant, kraftwork, etc)
A great example is the soundtrack to The Terminator. Steady rhythm of synthesized sound, that keeps the mind intense and focused and moving forward.

The worst thing to listen to IMO is aggressive rock or rap where there can be multiple instruments or aggressive lyrics which subliminally distract your mind. Even the slightest "oh I hate this song" thought is enough to take my focus elsewhere. That's the irony of the "werewolves of London" color of Money scene-the song is too fun for serious pool.

In the future, ear buds will be smaller and wireless (the current wireless ones seem very bulky) and we will be able to freely play with our own soundtrack.

Most of the time you can tune it out, if it's not too loud. But when you hear Rob Zombie screaming RAWRAWRAW as your at the table, shit goes south real quick. And with the internet jukes, it can sometime be horrendous, especially with some of the Techno and Autotune stuff out there.

I completely agree. I was at a tournament this weekend and we started in the morning before the place usually opened, so they hadn't put any music on. It was nice to just hear the clatter of balls and occasional quiet chatter. But people acted like their oxygen was cut off. "OMG I can't stand this!" "It's too quiet in here!" "Someone put some music on!" I really don't get it.

To each, his own I guess lol..... I like the beat. Up tempo blues, rock, and some older country.

There is no silence just noise. Conversations you don't want to hear and sudden sounds that can make you jump. Music masks all this. I have to laugh at the ones who hate music in the pool room. The alternative it way worse. They would be running around the room asking people to be quiet.

I generally don't care unless it's really grating music like metal or edm music with sound effects from the Transformers...

If there's a pool table, you can bet I'll be playing on it. I care more about the game than the conditions or environment.

In a lot of leagues now it is against the rules to have earphones or headphones on because of blue tooth and people being able to talk to them while they are at the table. A person on our team just had a phone playing music (loud enough to barely being heard) stuck down in the front of her blouse and a member on the other team complained and the league operator made her turn it off. We were in a qualifier.

It's all background noise to me. I get more pissy during football season because people jump up and yell and I've been knocked into while I'm down on a shot on more than 1 occasion.

I love Sun records years Johnny cash and Elvis, and still listening to many oldies while playing, but when the toe starts a tapping, my stance takes a hit :grin-square:

I got into a heated argument with my teammates bimbo girlfriend, one night, about her playing Kid Rock non-stop and requesting the volume be raised every 5 minutes . Honestly, I don't even care for my teammate, but I don't run the team, so no arguing here. I finally told her to quit her whining and got the room owner to turn the volume down.

I don't mind music playing, but keep it at half volume and play something decent. If I have to raise my voice when you are standing next to me, it's too loud. I value my hearing and don't care if some sluts in the pool room want to hear the latest gangster rap, it's a damn pool room!

Why do you play on league? It doesn't sound like it is your thing. I played on a league once for like 4 weeks and that was enough.

Because we typically don't have trashy girls wanting to party in the pool hall on a week night. What does me playing in league have to do with noise levels and pool room music?

FYI, I do enjoy playing in leagues. I don't enjoy people that don't play pool screaming and dancing near the pool tables, all while complaining the dubstep isn't loud enough.
