Hi all. Anyone know of any pool rooms near by the Hilton in E.B. NJ that can be recommended?

thanks

Hmm... btw,I recall that foyer area was pretty good size outside the tournament room. How about a few out there! :D

I don't have an answer for you, but more questions. I've never been to a tournament. What is usually done for tables outside of the tournament floor? Do they set up practice rooms for the players? Do they set up tables for noncompetitors and charge hourly rates?
I look forward to this event. I'm wondering if I should bring my cue.

I did stop in last yr. and the only tables were in the tournament room. None were available for play anywhere else. Oh, there was, I believe one of those small bar tables in the hotel bar. Nothing of interest there for me anyway.

I recalled the area outside the hotel a little difficult to navigate. One way streets as I recall with turn arounds every so often.

You miss one turn around, and beads of sweat start rolling down your forehead. You feel like you're gonna end up in Florida before the next one. :) But of course, that's me, and I get lost at the corner of my own street after dusk. :)

So how do the players warm up? I see it's on Route 18 which I've had problems with on occasion. I understand what you mean.

I did a yellow pages search and here's what I came up with. All seem to be within 5 miles. Makes me think I'm living in the wrong part of Jersey. I have to go at least 20 minutes to find one.

"Paradise Billiards"-1713 State Route 27, Somerset, NJ 08873 (732) 249-4555
"Edison Billiards 153"-1897 Woodbridge Avenue, Edison, NJ 08817 (732) 572-7665
"Qzone Billiards"-1824 State Route 27, Edison, NJ 08817 (732) 985-2110
"Elite Billiards"-248 Ryders Lane, Milltown, NJ 08850 (732) 846-7665
"Pines Billiards"-2090 State Route 27 4, Edison, NJ 08817 (732) 650-0665
"Alluring Ball Room"-405 State Route 18, East Brunswick, NJ 08816 (732) 698-1161 (not sure if this is a pool room or a catering hall by the sound of it)

Although I'm not the best person to answer with respect to time and warmup, I'm pretty sure they were only warming up on the play tables prior to the start of the match and between matches as I recall. Never saw any other tables around.

btw, if you go, and if you pack a coldcut lunch, one other thing I recalled was the meat won't go bad in the tournament room! It was seriously COLD in there. :D

If you're looking for something close, Elite in Milltown is probably the closest. Then there's Sharky's on Route 1, which I've never been to.
Paradise is now called One Shot, and is a bit of a drive from there. Of the list provided, I'd prefer to go to Qzone, which is small but the tables play fairly well in comparison to the others. I've been to Edison 153 once before and the tables appeared to be ok as welll, but I didn't actually play on them.

And... you can probably remove Alluring from that list.

Elite billiards in east brunswick is only about 10-15 minutes away. Sharky B's is now called the sand castle. The Sand Castle, I believe, is in Edison on route 1, also about 10-15 minutes away. Both are pool halls. No alcohol, but you can bring your own. Alan Hopkins sometimes play at the castle on Mondays.

haha, yeah sounds like driving in new jersey. don't worry though, if you go too far there is always an opportunity to u-turn within at least a mile, often less.
and sharky's/sandcastle is a great place to visit. their day special is great 11am-6pm for $10 you won't be disappointed. see yall there in a few months, i can't wait.

oh btw if you are into traveling a little bit, you could always hop a train or drive on down to amersterdam.

justin, I was thinking about going to Amsterdam also, but the mere thought of NYC and parking is another whole thing. Is there sufficient parking for Amsterdam?

Also, are there any nice hotels very near by? Not those hostel things LOL, but something nice like a Hilton?

thanks,

There is street parking available but depending on the time of the day, you may have to sit and wait for something to open up. If you're at the Hilton in EB, there is a bus stop right next door which would bring you directly to port authority in the city. From there, you'd have to jump on the N,R,W train downtown to union square.

the tourney is at the end of august if im not mistaken.

and 3andstop, like briandlau said it can be a hassle depending on what time of day it is to park, so if you aren't too keen on driving around NYC, the bus/subway is a perfect substitute, it'll probably take a little longer though.

justin.

im assuming you mean a hotel near amsterdam. i don't really know any hotels in nyc, other than the waldorf, and i'm just gonna assume thats out of your budget. it really wouldn't be too bad a commute from EB, but if your looking for a few nights in the city, i'm sure the hilton in EB could help you out with other locations, that is if you are staying there. sorry if that was confusing and void of any useful information.
