Pool Table in Garage

There is a possibility that I may be moving to Florida and purchasing a home. Of course, one of the main considerations is a room that is large enough to handle a 9' pool table. In the DC area, that's not really a problem because we have these things called basements. Florida does not. So in Florida I am looking for houses that would have a large enough family room for a 9' table and I'm not having great success. There are, however, plenty of homes with large 2 car garages. I was curious to know if any AZers currently have their table setup in the garage and how it's working out. Is the humidity or cold weather a problem? Talk to me.

I had a garage ..... now I have a pool table room. I insulated it and have seperate heat and A/C for it. It wasn't really that expensive to do and I love it. The while door and wall are where the garage door used to be. This is a Crown 3 in a 20 X 24 ex-garage. Ok so I know the trim aint done but the table is and that's as far as we really needed to get isn't it???

Should be no problem. I insulated the walls and had an insulated door put in because my garage gets super hot. I also epoxied the floor to make it look better. I am having no problems with the table and my mechanic said he didn't predict any issues as well.

All I need now is a protectant that will ward off my older boys.

EDIT: I also have a 10,000 BTU for my space in the summer heat.

I have a Diamond Pro-Am 9 ft. in my garage. I live in Phoenix so heat is a factor during most months. So, I had a wall AC-unit installed (18,500 BTU's), insulated the garage door with Styrofoam cut out pieces (Home Depot actually sells these specifically for garage doors), and I put carpeting in to reduce noise factor. It's been 3 years and so far, so good.

It's definitely do-able... in Florida, I would think you would also need a wall AC-Unit to remove the humidity from the garage.

Good luck,
Ray

There's a mandatory grade, or slope, to garage floors in CA, so when home shopping I looked for the largest garage with the minimal slope possible. This means on one side of the table you will be about an inch shorter than on the other. You do notice this less and less as time goes on.

Carpeting with padding is a must. The padding is important for long hours and for playing barefoot.

Summers in Sac have annual countdowns of the number of days we go over 100 degrees, and it always seems like we're trying to break a new record. I hate the heat- hate it, hate it. I even hate the people who try to offer comfort with "But it's a dry heat..."

Winters are fine, though. We sometimes will use a little space heater on really cold nights.

I have a 9 foot Diamond Pro/Am in my fully converted garage. If you are buying, I suggest trying to get foreclosure selling for 20%-30% under fair market value, and then negotiate a higer loan amount, and use the extra money to professionally convert the garage and upgrade the A/C system (if needed) to handle the extra square footage.

Here is the thread where I show pics detailing the whole process..

Sheesh blah blah, playing barefoot is never acceptable (except maybe in Kentucky). :grin-square:

The grade in the grade will slope toward the drain if it exists or down to the drive way (like mine). I think it's a 1/4" for each foot. My mechanic worked that all out thank goodness.

I recently put a table in my garage and it's worked out great. Approximately 20' X 20', I had plenty of room. Since I only needed 5' of clearance from one wall, I was able to place the table such that my wife can still get her SUV in. Obviously I pull it out to play but so what? I'm happy and she's happy.

I live near the beach in Southern California so the weather is not a problem. The main thing is I have an insulated door, this helps keep the temperature inside at reasonable levels. Definitely put down some kind of carpeting to protect falling cues and dropped balls. I just laid down some indoor/outdoor stuff with double sided tape. It's real cheap and worked fine.

I would suggest that you use a garage door that doesn't have windows if you have a choice. It just keeps the sun and glare from interfering with the table lighting. Course, you can just block out the windows from the inside if it bothers you.

Room to play

I have my table in my barn in a separate room behind my shop. I put in insulation for heat and ac. It's great

Hey, (new stroke) do you think people in Kentucky go without shoes????

My 30' x 40' shop has been finished inside with blue stain pine and 20' x 30' of it is used for the man cave (workbenches, pool table, dart board, 42" TV, 2 log spectator chairs -soon to be 4). We need to put in a ceiling yet. Going to get a tax refund and save a couple more thousand and we will get that. After that, save up more and build a bar and upper cabinets over the workbenches. Probably should insulate the garage doors, also. It is great, but it will be better when completely finished! If I ever move from here, it will have to be to a house with a large great room that can be used as a game room. We don't need a living or dining room.

As long as you factor in the cost of heat and A/C when needed, theres no reason why you cant use a garage. In Florida though, that A/C bill is gonna hurt! In NY, the heat bill is more of a problem. I use a hot water heater to draw baseboard heat. Not very practical, yet effective enough.

I live just north of tampa.I have a diamond 9ft with a 4x8 light in my 2 car garage.I have the floor carpeted, ceiling insulated and the garage door insulated with garage door insulation from home depot.I have 2 8inch a/c duct runs with 12x12 4way grills and in the summer it is very comfortable in there.I hung the light so the garagedoor would still open.In most of florida if you cover your garage door(frame it in and insulate it outside) and make it nonfunctional you have added it to the living square ft of your house and your propety taxes will go up.I don`t know what area your looking at for your move but I`m a a/c tech and I`m in alot of houses in this area that are forsale that have big enough rooms for a 9ft.hope this helps,I will try to post some pics of my setup.PM me your # if you would like me to let you know when I see a house that might work for you in this area.

Don't

I've lived in S/W Florida since 2001, came from Michigan (last one turn the lights out). Like you I had a basement for storage and recreation.

You can't win....If you do away with the garage for a pool table you will lose the already minimal storage that no basement FL homes don't have. You are not going to have room to store any of your other "Toys" other than closets.

If you are accustomed to a 1,500 Sq ft home with a basement. You'd better consider at least a 2,000 (min) to 2,500 Sq ft in FL to adjust for the loss of The basement.

You CAN NOT leave a nice car out on your drive way in the Florida Sun. It win ruin the paint in a few Summers, rot the door weather striping & the tires. The SUN is brutal! And, you must have a garage to hide the car and yard toys in Hurricane season.

The only answer is to buy a larger home with a Family room and use the garage for your vehicles like normal people do. Or forgetabout the table.

A newer 2,000 Sq ft home of CBS construction with a two+ car garage can be bought for 100 to 150. Maybe less...We've got a lot of bank owned owned homes here. Google Ft Myers/Cape Coral homes. Stay away from Lehigh Acres.

Finding a job, will be your biggest problem.

Kind regards,

Good point about the sun beating down on the paint job, but if you have a sufficiently wide 2 car garage, and only need to get one car in, both can probably be accommodated. The table doesn't have to be in the middle of the garage.

As I said previously, my wife parks her SUV no problem with my 9' GC4.

Barefoot...

Since I arrived here in Nov. for work I have noticed a common thread...The barefoot ones are also pregnant:p
