Pool Table in garage

I am wondering if it's ok to keep a pool table in a garage, or will the weather change mess up the wood/playability of it?

What state are you in ? is the garage insulated ? more info.please... humidity and temp extremes are bad for wood products..keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from the heat and ac registers direct air is important..also do a search for old threads like this it is covered about once per month..one thing you will learn on AZ is that there are ALOT of people that will help give you answers..Happy Holidays..:)

Thanks. I'm in NW Ohio, so the temp ranges from around 10*F in the winter to 90+ in summer. The reason I ask is that I have decided to get back into pool. There is no poolhall around here, the only option I really have of playing is to play at bars which can get costly, not to mention the quality of competition is horrible. I decided to really practice, I need to get my own table. My sister and I own a duplex and I live in the top floor, I dont' really have room for a pool table in the house, but we have a two car garage which has enough room to put the table. It's insulated, but not attached to the house, or heated.

There are tables built for outdoor use. For practice that may be the way to go. I think the kind of temp/humidity extremes would hurt the table badly over time.

if it is NOT heated i would pass on putting a table in..electric heat is expensive to operate .gas you would have to dig and run an underground line plus a heater ..then you would have to insulate it really well...a concrete floor conducts the cold so you would have to insulate under the carpeting..depending on your budget ? also depending on the layout of your home..do you have a large dining room ? most people don't use their dining rooms regularily.just an idea...good luck

I just added a GC-1 in my garage and absolutely love it. I don't have any climate control device so I really have to bear the elements. I really think the table will be fine. What I have learned is, on humid days, it is dificult to get a smooth stroke, but when practicing like this, it builds your confidence.
For example, the past weekend I went to the hall to get some action, everyone was complaining how humid it was,LOL. I didn't even notice, my stroke was smooth, compared to where I practice.

PS, I do plan on added a AC/Heating portable unit later, I just havent found that I like, plus it's a seasonal item so most stores don't carry them right now.

Well just my 2c, Good shooting

My buddy has had his table a 8ft Olhausen in his garage for a few years here in west Texas. And the temp varies greatly here, overnight in some cases. Lucky for him he has had no issues so far. Myself I talked the wife into buying a really nice Olhausen 8ft table and convinced here that it was a piece of living room furniture :) A perfect Place for it :)

I just put a GCI in my garage also. I am in Los Angeles, so no real issues with the weather. I insulated and installed drywall. Put in a bigger window, padding and carpet. I had AC and heat already piped in, planned ahead on that one!

A buddy of mine moved from LA to ID and couldn't play during the winter, it was way too cold out in the garage. He added a nice space heater and had insulation blown into the walls. He can now play during the cold months.

I think that the biggest factor would be insulation. A heater and window type AC can be added for comfort.

No matter how bad it can be sometimes, at least you will have a place to play!!

I have a barn with no insulation, and have had two pool tables in there since 2004 (Frederick, Md). No heat, no air conditioning. Temperature varies from the teens to the 90s.

No noticeable damaged has occurred.

My last purchase of a Diamond Pro from about a year ago has not been affected as far as I can tell. It has gone through two hot summers and one winter.

I use electric heaters when playing - March thru December.

All I can say is to GO FOR IT!

Microterf,

I bought a used 8' Diamond Pro last year in February. It replaced a bar table that I had in my garage. The day they came to deliver it and set it up it was 10 degrees out. I had two kerosene heaters going to get the temperature up to 50 in the garage. That was the best I could do. It was so cold that when he poured the wax it curled up about 4 inches off the table. We had to heat the table with a hair dryer.

It is hard to keep a table perfect in a garage but IMHO well worth it. I don't need it perfect but I do need something close to practice on. I love it.

I do plan to install some insulation when I have the time and the cash.

Good Luck,:)

Microterf,

BTW I live in Troy Mich just North of Detroit. Maybe we should have a winter garage tournament. Gloves and hats suggested. ;)

When Ernesto set up my table, he told me that all he uses and has great success with, is BONDO !!!

Would using bondo help in cold weather situations??

garage table

I closed in my 2 car garage and turned it into a pool room. The climate control is a heat pump with outside compressor. It is quiet and is a great AC unit. The heating capabilities drop off considerably when it's under 35 degrees outside. I back up the heat with a plug in baseboard electric unit (about 2.5 feet long). This costs me an extra $12.00 per month during the cold months. The heat pump also keeps the humidity even all year.

The one thing I neglected to take into account when I remodeled is that usually garage floors are slanted towards the front. My floor drops 3.5" from back to front. This made leveling the table fairly difficult. Also there is an almost imperceptable "height of table" difference from the far side to the near side - but over time you notice it.

I have never regretted doing this to my garage even though it isn't connected to the house, so I have to go outside to get there. The plus is that I never get noise complaints for playing late at night. Good luck with your contemplated project. Incidentally, it cost me about $15,000.00 to convert the garage including the cost of the table. I did most of the grunt work myself (demo, painting, etc.). I paid for the electric, drywall, trim, and window/door installation.

Poolhustler,

I'm not sure about the Bondo but I have heard of using it. I will probably have the table redone in the next year or 2. I would like to put new rubber on it and have the pockets tightend. Diamond table pockets come in 2 sizes and the one I have has the larger ones.

Bondo is best. Wax will melt in hot weather, IMHO.

I might try bondo next time. The melting point of beeswax is 144 - 147 F. My garage gets hot in the summer but not that hot. The garage is detached and I have played in temperatures from the 90's to in the teens.

I piped in some 3/4 copper and a small pump directly from the boiler of my house, to the garage. Works like a charm, almost free baseboard heat.

Hey kevin,

Looks like it's only a 2 hour drive between us. We'll def have to get together sometime and shoot some.

Thanks for the input everybody. My original plan was to put it in the living room (that's what I did in Denver) but I really don't have enough room in any of my rooms, and I really want to have some room big enough to move around so I can practice without worrying hitting the butt of the cue against a wall or anything. I think I'm going to get the table next month and put it in the garage. I'll let you guys know how it goes
